Huge HDTV price cuts this month

Sony HDTVAccording to HD Guru, Sony is planning huge price cuts on their 2008 model HD TVs in May. Apparently Sony has been deeply saddened by loosing the number one spot to a slew of rivals and is taking steps to gain back the bragging rights. This is great news for consumers who will see price cuts between 20 and 25% on current models including the Bravia Line beginning in May.

This is awesome news even if you aren't interested in inflating Sony's ego. A move like this should force other major manufacturers to drop price, including Toshiba, Panasonic and even resellers like Westinghouse. Similarly this downward trend in pricing could force plasma TV prices to drop in order to remain competitive. A situation like this could do a lot stimulate the economy; mix the stimulus package with concern for the digital TV switchover, toss in drastically reduced prices and many consumers will easily find a reason to buy a new TV.

If you are in the market for a TV, you better wait a week or so until prices start dropping. If you aren't looking for a Sony brand LCD, put your purchase on hold until the end of the month to let manufacturers and retailers catch up to the price drops. There are few things more annoying than seeing the TV you just set up at home 25% cheaper a week later. If you have already purchased an HD TV be sure to check on the price guarantee many big box retailers have. If it looks like you will run out of time before your new Sony's price is corrected you may want to return it and pick one up when the price drops, watch out for restocking fees if you go this route.

Welcome to the future of TV: Here's your bill

Every now and again over the past couple of years, some media source or another has run a story about the impending switch to digital TV. As of February 17, 2009, all television signals will be broadcast in digital, as opposed to analog, format.

This was mandated by Congress, which justified it by stating that digital broadcasting will clear up frequencies for public-safety communications. I'm sure that this decision had absolutely nothing to do with the fact that it would ultimately require millions of Americans to buy new televisions, which would pour tons of money into the coffers of various manufacturers. I can't help but wonder how much money Sony has contributed to Congressional election funds over the last decade or so.

On the one side, this is really pretty irrelevant. If you receive your television signals through cable or satellite, then you will not be affected. In fact, this will only be an issue for people who use television antennae, a technology that is almost out the door.

Two GB Sony USB flash drive $12.95, Staples

The Daily Deal for Monday, April 14: You can never have too many flash drives around your office and this deal on Sony Microvault drives at Staples is well worth stocking up on. You can get a 2 GB drive for $12.95, which is a steal, and would make a great present for all those upcoming graduation parties you will be attending. If you are feeling generous, you could splurge on the 4 or 8 GB models which are $24.98 and $49.99 respectively. $12.95 is about the best price I have seen for a name brand 2 GB flash drive in a long time, the deal is even better given you can pick it up in store and don't need to waste any extra cash on shipping. The higher capacity drives while a bargain aren't the best deal you can find but are still a good deal if you need a high capacity drive in a hurry.

The drive features a retractable USB port so you don't need to worry about losing a cap during your busy day. The unit is also small so it should easily fit into your backpack or purse. Don't pick up any of these drives if you are looking to use the Readyboost feature in Windows Vista, as it appears that none of these drives will work to speed up your system. You can't beat this deal for the combination of size, form factor, price and convenience.

Coming soon to a cell phone near you

At first, I thought, "They're crazy."

Then I thought, "Yeah, crazy like a mongoose."

(I get tired of clichés.)

Sony Pictures Television just announced yesterday that it's going to be the first Hollywood studio to offer full-length movies by cell phone, the Associated Press is reporting. It won't be movies on demand; they'll play in a loop, interspersed with commercials.

Starting in May, Sony will offer a slew of popular films like Ghostbusters, Karate Kid and Roxanne--you know, starring Steve Martin. Boy, that's a great one. I always crack up when Martin's in the bar, and he does all of those nose jokes at once, and...
