Sure It's Valuable,
But Can You Sell It?
It's getting harder for the super-wealthy to unload their pricey possessions and properties, bloggers from Luxist have found. Many of these rare and beautiful items are valued in the millions, but their owners have struggled to sell them for a fraction of that these days. Check out these 12 no-sale situations.
First Up: Shaq's House -

Sold For: Not sold
Basketball player Shaquille O'Neal has been trying to sell his home on Miami's prestigious Star Island off and on since 2005.The home has eight bedrooms, an indoor basketball court, gym, steam room and sauna. The 2.5-acre grounds include a tennis court, six-car garage, dock, two-bedroom guest house and Shaq's pool, complete with Superman logo. He has chopped a few million off the price but may have to go a bit lower if he wants to sell in the depressed real estate market.

'The Wheat Fields' by Van Gogh
Price: Estimated between $28 to $35 million
Sold For: Unknown
Usually Van Gogh is a hot seller at auctions by the big auction houses, but that wasn't the case at the Sotheby's Impressionist and Modern art sale in November 2007. Van Gogh's 'The Fields (Wheat Fields)' was estimated to bring in between $28 million and $35 million, but bidding stalled out at $25 million and the painting did not sell. In the days after the auction, shares of Sotheby's stock fell sharply because of the embarrassment.

Michael Vick's Former Home
Price: Currently listed at $995,000
Sold For: Still on the market
Michael Vick's Surry, Virginia home was sold by Vick after the dogfighting controversy. Current owner Wilbur Ray Todd Jr. rejected a final auction bid of $747,000. It is now listed at $995,000. A non-profit called Jalie's Butterflies wants to buy it to turn it into a shelter for abused dogs. Organizers say that if they do not raise enough money to buy the house, donations will go to the ASPCA.

Scott Storch's Yacht
Price: Currently listed at $3.699 million
Sold For: Still on the market
Times have been tough for music producer Scott Storch. Although he has made millions, he is currently facing financial trouble. He put his yacht, the Tiffany, on eBay in March, proclaiming in capital letters on the listing that "THE BOAT IS BEING SOLD UNDER DISTRESS, OWNER BOUGHT HER AND NOW GOT SHORT ON MONEY." The yacht is worth around $20 million but didn't get much more than a million-dollar offer. It's currently listed through Yacht World for $3.699 million.

Orson Welles' Oscar
Price: Between $800,000 and $1.2 million
Sold For: Unknown
Believe it or not, film auteur Orson Welles won only one Oscar, for screenwriting 'Citizen Kane.' This Oscar was put up for sale through Sotheby's in New York last December. Had it sold, the award would have raised money for the Dax Foundation, a Los Angeles-based charitable group. The Oscar did not sell at auction, but Welles' personal working copy of the script did go for $97,000.

Marie Antoinette's Pearls

A set of natural pearls that once belonged to Marie Antoinette was expected to be a hot seller at a Christie's auction in London last November. The pearls were made into a necklace in 1849 with a fringe of 21 drop-shaped gray natural pearls, suspended from an old-cut diamond collet and connected to a diamond ribbon intertwined with a ruby collar. The piece was expected to provide a stunning finish to the Magnificent Jewels auction, but ended up providing an anti-climactic ending instead.

Damien Hirst's 'For the Love of God'
Price: $100 million
Sold For: Asking price to an investment group including the artist
Controversial artist Damien Hirst has pickled sharks and other animals in formaldehyde, but his decision to cover an old skull in platinum and diamonds may turn out not to have been one of his smartest moves. Hirst attempted to sell it for $100 million. Finding no single collector to pick it up, the skull sold to an investment group, of which Hirst is a member, for the full $100 million.

Lesotho Promise Diamonds
Price: $50 million
Sold For: Not sold
The huge 603-carat Lesotho Promise rough diamond was bought by diamond dealer Laurence Graff in 2006 for $12.36 million, with the hopes of making a huge profit. Graff had the stone cut into 26 smaller diamonds. Graff is looking to sell the stones to a single buyer, and recently he had all the stones set into one blockbuster necklace which went on display in Monte Carlo. No word on what the price for the necklace is yet, but this will guarantee that they will be sold in a set, which was Graff's desire all along.

Wikiosco is an 1895 historic Tudor revival on Lake George in New York. The classic home has a beautiful interior with a library, leaded glass windows, an elevator, a fitness center and the original fireplace mantels and woodwork. The home has been restored by the current owners, but mostly looks as if it is ready to film a Victorian melodrama. Perhaps it's a bit too classic; the home has been on the market for several years for the same price.

The 218-foot Haida G is a vintage yacht which was originally built in 1929 and restored to her former glory a few years ago. It has seven cabins, a library and a charming main salon. Modern touches include a padded sundeck area with a Jacuzzi. The Haida G has been chartered for a few years (at 245,000 euros per week) and was priced at 28 million euros two years ago, but is still on the market, now for 23 million euros.

Andrew Lloyd Webber planned to put his Picasso portrait, 'Portrait of Angel Fernandez de Soto,' up for auction in 2006, but the painting was pulled due to a dispute by a man named Julius Schoeps, who claims that the painting was lost by his family in a 'forced sale' by Nazis. The painting was to be sold to benefit Lloyd Webber's philanthropic efforts. In late 2007, the lawsuit was dismissed, so this painting will likely get a second chance at sale soon.

We've all got things in our garage we need to get rid of, but California resident Nancy Fiddler had an entire mastodon skeleton in there. Fiddler and her family put the skeleton on eBay, looking for a minimum bid of $115,000. The skeleton had been displayed at the Oakland Museum of Natural History, and later at a wine bar. It turns out there is a bit of a fossil glut on eBay, and while an entire mastodon skeleton is a rarity, so was the six-figure price. It did not sell.

World's Largest Record Collection

Paul Mawhinney has been collecting records for most of his life. His collection has been appraised at $50 million, but Mawhinney is only asking for $3 million, hoping to sell the collection before his blindness and diabetes make life any more difficult. He hopes to sell the collection to a museum or university that can take care of it and preserve it for the listening enjoyment of future generations.

Blogs like this let me know that until all the dinosaurs die off, America will still have racial problems. Shaq is worth over 400 million dollars...he bought a 19 million dollar house.He can actually afford it. As far as Shaq helping black folk . What he does with his money is his business.
