Not long ago, no one used toilet paper. Heck, they were lucky to have a chamber pot, let alone a "bathroom". We had friends who were rather wealthy by banking standards, and until the 1970's did not have a modern "bathroom" in their 18C Villa. The bathing room had mosaic and tile work which included cut, semi-precious stones in the floor designs, plus a nearly walk in fireplace. Can you blame them for not wanting to destroy something so beautiful?
