What's a Car Seat?

My husband and I were on the freeway and witnessed a woman driving with a small infant on her lap. I could see clearly because she was in a compact car and we were in a full size truck. I rolled my window down (my husband was driving) and held up my cell phone indicating that I was ready to dial '911'. The woman then handed her baby to one of her passengers. Not sure if that was any safer, considering she did it while driving 65 mph. I didn't see a carseat in the vehicle, so I'm assuming the baby usually cruises down the interstate perched on someone's lap. BTW, the driver was not Britney Spears. An I-40 Trend in N.C.?

I'll never forget it. I was on 1-40 in Cary, N.C and I glanced to my left. And what do I see the driver doing in the next lane? He was brushing his teeth and appeared to have a cup that he was using for rinsing or spitting. Go figure! I told my daughter and we were laughing so hard. After a while the driver could see us laughing at him, and he hit the accelerator so that we couldn't observe him. About a week later, I saw a female driver brushing her teeth too, on the same stretch of road. What a coincidence ...

I observed a driver literally hanging out of the window looking at his left rear tire while rolling forward at 30+ mph. He was hanging out over half his body. Really scary and STUPID.

Mom's Major Mistake

My mom [clipped coupons while driving] and it drove me crazy. One day she was taking me to school when I was 12 and she didn't see that the light turned red and we hit a pickup truck in front of us. I had my backpack on and was in the front seat with no seatbelt. My head smashed against the windshield and I had bruised ribs. Now I ALWAYS wear my seat belt and make sure my mom is paying attention when I ride with her.

I'm sure there will be many people here who will say, this sounds made up. But believe me when I tell you, if I didn't see it with my own eyes I'm not sure I'd believe me either. Last week, I pulled out of [my brother's] street, onto the main road. Just then a driver passing by me in another vehicle had a cell phone to her ear, held there by her shoulder, and with the hand not holding the steering wheel, she was dialing another. I was dumbfounded. I just couldn't believe it. Really didn't think it was humanly possible, or necessary.

On Dec. 31 1972, on Main Street in Newark, Del., I witnessed a bunch of wild kids opening and closing all 4 doors while driving on a one way street -- it is a small stretch with 90 degree sharp turn too. They had everybody behind and slowed down -- it was their way of saying Happy New Year. Scary!

On a Highway going east I noticed a car that was drifting. About that time he crossed into our lane about 25 feet in front of us, then hit the shoulder on our side and flipped several times. The State trooper called us and said the man had been working on his laptop while driving.

I saw this a couple weeks ago while driving through Casper, WY. A guy had the top down and was standing on the drivers seat steering the car through town. I watched him for about 5 minutes. Have no idea how he planned to stop.

This car ahead of us had a kiddie swimming pool on the roof. 3 kids in the car were leaning forward holding a part of the pool on the roof. The driver was driving with one hand and holding the pool also to keep from blowing away. I saw no ropes or tie-downs on this pool.

I think some of these stories are kind of ridiculous.. but i will admit that i have driven with my knees before... yeah i have had to make a phone call before on the road and i was on a moderately busy road where people in front of me were constantly changing speeds... and as i have a standard i had to shift steer and hold the phone.. so i have made the mistake....

I have eaten cereal, full meals, changed clothes, rolled up, fed my baby from the back seat while driving. In order to mulit task while driving you MUST be completely experienced. You have to allow ouble the length in between cars, look for crazy drivers, etc. etc.

for those of you i have seen driving with your dog on your lap,reading a book,texting remember when i read about your accident i will be cheering you on because i love to read about you in the news it gives me something to read when im not driving my car because when i drive i dont endanger other peoples love ones remember read the paper tomorrow and i guarantee you will read about some idiot having an accident.but they will have an excuse for it.
