There's one reason not to cheer for Independence Day: It's one of the deadliest holiday for alcohol-related car crashes. Statistics gathered over the past 25 years show that, on average, nearly 51 percent of all deadly traffic crashes on July 4 are related to alcohol -- although that percentage varies from year to year.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has been tracking car crash statistics for a quarter of a century. Holidays that sometimes rival the Fourth of July for fatalities include New Year's Day, Labor Day, Memorial Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas. Eric Bolton, spokesperson for NHTSA, says that when people think of a deadly holiday "the intuitive thought would be New Year's Day." However, that association may be precisely why people stay off the roads on New Year's than they do on July 4, he says. (While the New Year's statistics are totaled over three days, the Fourth of July stats are for one day.)
Two years ago, 200 people reportedly died in car accidents on July 4. Out of that total, 44 percent died as a result of alcohol-impaired driving. By comparison, 391 people died that same year during a three-day period surrounding New Year's Day (NHTSA judges the length of a holiday based on which day of the week it falls). In that case, 40 percent were alcohol-related.
No matter what day it is, most crash fatalities occur on two-lane roads. Weekends are more dangerous than weekdays and more people die while driving in rain compared to snow or sleet. December, January and February are generally the most dangerous months for car fatalities.
NHTSA's 2007 annual report (2008 statistics will be released this fall) also states that the most dangerous time to drive is between midnight to 3 a.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. In addition, half of all fatal crashes that year occurred at speeds of 55 mph or more.

My heart simply felt such compassion and understanding when you spoke
of the painful changes one drivern can inflict on so many people for a life time!
December 13th 07 An 80,000 lb transfer truck ran over the back of my 95 Honda Accord. It was there are no words to describe the horror such a crash inflicts
on a person.
This driver was not intoxicated but again drinking and driving is a choice so is driving when extremely tired. When are people going to consider that what they are doing on our roads and highways can be deadly? We ALL can check in.
Get back into our minds and bodies while driving. Realligning with the whole.
Who ever is in that other vehicle could be my mother, my brother any friend?
Why take a chance that MY actions won't ever have a consequence?
I believe after being a victim of violence of any kind a person is changed for
a life time. Things have a different meaning. I regret sadly that losing a spouse's health can never be replaced by money. You sound like a very soulful person.
Anger isn't the reaction I heard in your plea. I heard a message that can reach
out to any mindful person to be AWARE. Don't make light of our ability to travel in this world with speed and not take responsibility!
Thank you for sharing your story. I presently have such a special injury that
I don't fit in the category of an Insurance Company's responsibility of going to court and taking care of my problems. I don't have anything that can be repaired by surgery. I have a neuro muscular injury and there isn't any cure. My neck, shoulders and back are imprinted and it will be my journey, my responsibility to get back my health in time. There is no payment that this company is really required to pay. Any settlement that I do get 40% will be taken by attorney's.
I went through the process of settlement because my daughter was in the car with me and I don't want to consistantly deplete my husbands insurance and retirement to get me back to health.
I am glad to share for I do believe it is our experience and our willingness to share with others that will bring about a change of thinking and behaviors especially on the deadly holidays. Frankly I DON'T drive very much. I rethink every route I have to take and I take some time planning when I do drive to go anywhere. It is just something I have to do now. I will NEVER let another
driver hurt me again if I can help it. I hope and pray that your message is received and that people do get that it is time to be more careful. Be more
empathetic and compassionate on every level. We are responsible for our brother!

They are aware that 44% is NOT nearly 51%. I agree with the need for drunks to stay home but the exageration tends to blur the message.
