There's one reason not to cheer for Independence Day: It's one of the deadliest holiday for alcohol-related car crashes. Statistics gathered over the past 25 years show that, on average, nearly 51 percent of all deadly traffic crashes on July 4 are related to alcohol -- although that percentage varies from year to year.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has been tracking car crash statistics for a quarter of a century. Holidays that sometimes rival the Fourth of July for fatalities include New Year's Day, Labor Day, Memorial Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas. Eric Bolton, spokesperson for NHTSA, says that when people think of a deadly holiday "the intuitive thought would be New Year's Day." However, that association may be precisely why people stay off the roads on New Year's than they do on July 4, he says. (While the New Year's statistics are totaled over three days, the Fourth of July stats are for one day.)
Two years ago, 200 people reportedly died in car accidents on July 4. Out of that total, 44 percent died as a result of alcohol-impaired driving. By comparison, 391 people died that same year during a three-day period surrounding New Year's Day (NHTSA judges the length of a holiday based on which day of the week it falls). In that case, 40 percent were alcohol-related.
No matter what day it is, most crash fatalities occur on two-lane roads. Weekends are more dangerous than weekdays and more people die while driving in rain compared to snow or sleet. December, January and February are generally the most dangerous months for car fatalities.
NHTSA's 2007 annual report (2008 statistics will be released this fall) also states that the most dangerous time to drive is between midnight to 3 a.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. In addition, half of all fatal crashes that year occurred at speeds of 55 mph or more.

Misleading Statistics. Although the 4th of July has the highest PERCENTAGE of alcohol related deaths, THANKSGIVING is the deadliest day with 548 deaths. LABOR DAY has the highest number of alcohol related deaths at 208.

This story illustrates peoples’ inability to understand simple numbers and their impact on the real world. If one is writing a story about the deadliest holidays, one should remember that dead is dead. If there are 548 deaths on Thanksgiving then that is the deadliest holiday for driving. If one is trying to illustrate the dangers of drinking and driving then Labor Day is the deadliest.

Recently around here, multiple offenders must have a breathalizer installed in their car(s). If they blow into it and they are over the legal limit their car will not start. If there was only some way to have each and every single car in the WORLD with one of these installed we could save everyone from being killed by drunks. I love to go to NASCAR races along with a lot of other people. For 40% of the fans there, this is just another opportunity to get drunk and pass out. I've seen them after the event was over go back to their truck drink 4 or 5 beers and 15 minutes later leave. That is why I either leave the event before its over or just wait a very long time afterwards to leave when their is barely anyone still there or on the roads. I also volunteer for the fire company. I've been a member for 5 years, and when I first joined about two months later we got called to an MVC (Motor Vehicle Collision) and ironically we were about to start a vehicle rescue training class. We arrived on scene to find a white Mercury flipped over stuck in the trees and ditch with the driver trapped inside. His car landed 100 feet from the town park. And yes there were kids playing there while this happened. He was DUI and running from the cops. He was going approximately 90mph in a 25mph zone. The next day, our paid ambulance crew went out to breakfast and saw the guy at the restaurant. All he did was get a ride to the hospital and got checked out, and was back out driving on the road the next day! Freaking ridiculous. I am 21 and I do not drink. Drinking makes you do very stupid stuff. It can be anything such as; sleeping with strangers, vandalism, getting hurt, or hurting / killing others when you get behind the wheel. Please don't drink and drive. It's not worth taking a life, or several lives just because you need (or want) to go somewhere after drinking. I don't like to see anyone get hurt (even those who are DUI), so it's very simple, DO NOT DRINK AND DRIVE.

you know i travel the country for a living , driving charter, i totally agree but lets say im from the midwest i have to say cell phone users are just as dangerous. the majority have the cell phone in the left hand so two things happen, one is they dont use turn signals, and two they cut you off. i will give you two cities for instance grand rapids mich and detroit mich. they cut you off then they get off no more than a quarter mile in front of you. its because all of the drivers out there need to learn to slow down. your life or someone elses life is not worth it just because your on the cell phone or in too big of a hurry.
