While waiting in a long line for the lady's room last weekend, I overheard a woman compliment another woman on her shoes, a pair of elegant silver sandals. "$12.99 at Payless!," the owner boasted. She bought the shoes at a New York City Payless store; I found the same shoes online for $22.99.

What made the bargain hunter's bragging so amusing was that she admitted that she got a deal in a crowd not accustomed to scrimping on their wardrobe: we were at a fundraising dinner in Greenwich, Connecticut for the American Red Cross. Women donned designer gowns, couples pulled up in BMWs, Mercedes and the like, and during a live auction, attendees bid thousands of dollars for exotic trips and luxury goods.

What was I doing there? My book on the Red Cross was included in the goodie bag.

When it was finally my turn in the bathroom, I discovered that I had left the tag on the inside of my new dress - it was $39 at Macy's-reduced from $170! When I emerged, most of the original crowd of sandal admirers had slipped back into the ball so I kept my secret to myself.

Michele Turk is a journalist and author whose first book, Blood, Sweat and Tears: An Oral History of the American Red Cross, was published in 2006. If you were anything like me, you probably dreamed of the day when you would be doing big things, making huge decisions that affect millions of people, defusing bombs at the last minute, holding the safety of the world in your hands...

Flash forward a couple of decades and here you are. Sitting at a computer, writing posts for a personal-finance blog (um...for example). Sure, it's important stuff, and you probably affect a few lives here and there, but you're not doing the James Bond, lives-hang-in-the-balance kind of things that you thought you'd be doing.

Well, the fine folks at ThinkGeek have come up with a great way to inject that extra bit of drama into your life. Their USB Doomsday Device Hub has four switches. Switches one and two are toggles, and switch three is a key; once you activate them, the red light goes on to tell you that the device is armed. Then, if you're sure that it's the right thing to do, you can flip up the clear cover on switch four and push the big red button. The box emits an explosive sound, but you know that the explosion is just the tip of the iceberg, a little hint of the mayhem that you've just released into the world. The key is that, whatever you did, it was big.

If the four switches and the cool explosion sound don't do it for you, the hub also has four USB slots that will help you find places for all of your computer's add ons. Best of all, at $39.99, it's 20% off the regular price. Save the world and save some money...what's not to like?

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Women's Swimwear, bikinis, 30% off and Free Shipping, Venus Swimwear

The Daily Deal for Sunday May 11, 2008

In plenty of time for the Memorial Day launch of the summer carousing season, Venus Swimwear is having a blowout sale on some of the season's most eye catching beach styles. This clever campaign, with the obvious message "get outside and play", is limited to one video game trade-in for one discount per family.

On May 17-18, BPS, in conjunction with Stearns, is also offering boaters the chance to trade in their old personal flotation devices (PFDs, better known as a lifejacket) for a new Stearns PFD. This is a great idea for any using an old PFD, which could rupture along the seams just when you need it, or still carrying around a 'one size fits all' PFD that could slip off a child faster than Sunday School clothes.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Adult footed pajamas $29.95 at Pajama City

No longer are footed pajamas just for your toddler. When a major corporation is fed up with a star's complaining, they make t-shirts!

In this case Papa John's Pizza made t -shirts which contained Lebron's number, 23, below the word "crybaby". These shirts were in response to James' complaints of being fouled by a Wizards player early in the series. The humorous shirts were sold by a Washington D.C. area Papa John's before game 6 last Friday. The shirts which turned up in Cleveland had little effect on the Cavaliers who went on to win the game. After I bad mouth a star athlete the most I have to do is calm down a local fanboy who adores him or her, corporations like Papa John's on the other hand have to work a bit harder to make amends. As a way of apologizing to Cleveland and Cavaliers fans, Papa John's Pizza will be offering a large one topping pizza to Cleveland residents on Thursday May 8th for just 23 cents! Papa John's is going further to try and assuage LeBron lovers by donating an additional $10,000 to the Cavaliers Youth Fund.

If you are planning to score an apology pizza today, I would suggest you call early and plan to pick it up since even those who could care less about basketball will likely be jumping on this HOT deal. If you live outside of Cleveland, Ohio then it doesn't look like you will be able to take part in this, but if you call up your local Papa John's Pizza and start crying maybe they will feel sorry and let you in on the peacemaking offer. Finally, don't take out any aggression from the incident on the individual who will be preparing your food out of sight!

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

$4.99 CDs at Best Buy with free shipping!

I know: no one buys CDs anymore.

But at $4.99 a pop, Best Buy's collection of budget CDs might be a good way to fill some holes in your library for less than it would cost on iTunes. And remember, you can always upload the tracks to your computer. And let's face it: you need a copy of Abba Live, which would set you back $7.97 on Amazon. For example, the blue tropic surplice top shown is $9.99 and is also available in pink.

On the homepage, click on the women's clothing icon, then "bargains" in the left-hand column, and search the tees and tanks category. Bargains abound in other departments as well, including some great deals on kids' swimwear. Their maternity line is also quite fashionable--and inexpensive. The standard version of the game is available with one free month of Xbox Live anywhere, but Walmart is throwing in a extra 3 months of Xbox Live for free! Xbox Live is Microsoft's Internet gaming platform which you need a subscription to to enjoy online gaming such as GTA IV's cops and robbers multi-player. Normally 4 months of Xbox Live would cost more then $20 extra so the savings are significant.

Grand Theft Auto 4 is an amazing game, for adults, it is rated Mature so you won't likely be giving it to your ten year old for his birthday. The game is netting A+ and 10/10 on many review sites and is at the least a candidate for "Game of the Year'. After you factor in shipping the whole package shouldn't cost much more than $62. This deal won't last long so be sure to order quickly!

If you want to play online after you pick this up be sure to send me a friend request, my gamertag is Ca1vin on Xbox Live.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Cheap sunscreen can save you a fortune in cancer treatments

Daily Deal for Thursday, May 1, 2008: Save thousands of dollars on melanoma treatments by using inexpensive sunscreen liberally. No-Ad Maximum Sun Block Lotion SPF-45, 16 oz., $8.95 plus shipping, drugsdepot.com.

The American Cancer Society has some sensible precautions you can adopt to reduce the chance of developing skin cancer: avoid exposure during the sunniest part of the day, wear a hat and sleeves, and, of course, use sunscreen. Unfortunately, many of the brand-name sunscreen products are very pricey.

But not all. Consumer Reports recently named No-Ad Maximum Sun Block Lotion SPF-45 as a best buy, as it stands up to comparison with the top brands in performance yet sells at a price that won't tempt you to skimp on its use. The 16 oz. bottle is a good value, although if you can find it in your local pharmacy you might do better than this mail-order price, since shipping will eat up much of the savings. If you can bundle this purchase as part of a $100 order from drugdepot.com, however, shipping is free.

Don't be penny wise and pound foolish with your sunscreen, unless you like the notion of having a big ugly cancer on the tip of your nose. That's not a good look.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

A sweet deal for ice cream lovers

Daily Deal for Wednesday, April 30 is 31-cent children's scoop night at Baskin Robbins ice cream stores. Participating stores will reduce the price of a single scoop (2.5 ounces) to 31 cents, plus tax, from 5 to 10 pm. At my local Baskin Robbins/Dunkin Donuts franchise, a single kids' scoop usually costs $1.99.

The promotion is to thank consumer for their business and to honor fallen firefighters. Baskin Robbins is donating $100,000 to the national Fallen Firefighters Foundation and some locations may also be collecting for local firefighting groups. The Baskin Robbins web site doesn't explain the tie-in, but the promotion intends to help a good cause -- and it's a sweet deal.

Portable massagers, handheld massagers, massaging chairs...whatever it was, if it had the ability to work knots out of their necks and backs, they were ready to shell out money for it. One time, in fact, they even bought a massaging pillow; whenever I put my head on it, my optic nerve would vibrate and things would get wavy.

The things that they wanted most of all, which we would all have to try out whenever the opportunity arose, were the massaging chairs. Of course, we could have bought the cheap ones, but they were a little rough; to me, it always felt like a horse was walking up and down my spine. The better, more relaxing massagers were always out of our range.

Recently, however, Brookstone has put its Programmable Personal Back Masseuse on sale for just under a hundred dollars, 74% off its usual price of $275. The masseuse is made with a neoprene backing, which makes it firm and well-anchored. Moreover, its wide selection of massage options means that there's a perfect setting for you, regardless of your problem.

Best of all, at only $100, it won't add stress to your shoulders!

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Cash for junk cell phones, PaceButler.com

Filed under: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Simplification, Technology, Daily Deal
The Daily Deal for Sunday, April 27, 2008

I went into work Friday and set my lunch box down next to an advertisement that caught my eye right away. It claimed that you can turn used cell phones into real money. After researching the offer a little bit, I've determined that it sure looks legitimate to me. Pace Butler Corporation claims it will buy your used cell phones for cold hard cash.

The company website is clear and simple. The process works in four easy steps. Just gather the cell phones that you want to sell, print out a prepaid postage shipping label, box the phones up and ship them, then get a check. The company states that your check will be issued within four business days.

Many of the phones on their payment list will only garner you a few dollars, and some only pay .50 cents. However, there are models which will get you as much as $50. You can check out their payment values on this list (PDF file). Just a few of the higher paying models are Motorola's Q9m and Q9h, each paying $50. If you have a Nextel i580, that model pays $30. The LG CU515 and CU575 each get you $35. There's a whole range of the Blackberry 8000 series which will net you anywhere from $10 to $50 apiece.

Nowhere on the website did I see mention of cell phone condition as a requirement for payment but I assume that they want the phones to be all in one piece. They also offer assistance with cell phone collection drives and will help you with cell phone collection fund raisers. If you just want to find out where to send your dead cell phones to keep them out of the landfill, they have a link to help with shipping 3 or more phones for recycling.

I think Pace Butler is really in step with responsible consumerism and assuming that it's completely legitimate, I believe this whole concept is an extremely timely idea.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Gary E. Caveat emptor: the Amazon reviews vary wildly. Some reviewers call it "outstanding, while others describe the customer service as horrendously bad. The 9 reviews resulted in an average of 3 stars, hardly anything to brag about. But for $8.45, it's worth a try.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Watch TV shows free on Hulu.com

I don't like spending money so the Daily Deal for today will be a freebie.

On Hulu.com, you can stream full episodes of a bunch of TV shows, including 24, Arrested Development, House, Top Chef, and many dozens more. The site also has hundreds -- perhaps thousands -- or shorter clips from those shows and many others.

To view full episodes, just look for titles withto the left.

And if you haven't already seen her show, be sure to check out the Kathy Griffin clips.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Your first step to gardening fun

Today's Daily Deal is a pair of Irwin Heavy duty gloves, $13.86 from Toolup.com.

All of my life, I've ignored the curse of poison ivy, seemingly immune to its effects. Until last summer. While hacking down some rogue vines overhanging my shed, I noticed that they had three leaves. Three days later, I was reminded of the old rhyme, "If leaves three, let it be." But too late.

Luckily, I was wearing a good pair of gardening gloves, which saved my hands from the blisters. Poison Ivy isn't the only hazard that calls for sturdy gardening gloves, though. Biting insects, glass shards and sharp thorns can make a day in the garden less than pleasant.

These gloves from Irwin are well padded, breathable and adjustable, just the ticket for a day in the dirt. Better yet, they're on sale.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

12% off at Staples, in store only, stock up!

Filed under: Bargains, Shopping, Technology, Daily Deal
Staples is celebrating "Customer Appreciation Week" through April 26th and is providing a coupon for 12% off your purchases (pdf). The coupon excludes computers, gift cards, phone cards and stamps; but is valid for just about anything else. You can only use the coupon in store, so you'll need to print it out and trek to your local brick and mortar location to enjoy these savings. Some stores may require that you have a Staples Rewards account to use it, but you can sign up for free in store.

This week would be a great time to stock up on office supplies for around the house or for use in your small business. Some other items to look for include monitors and external hard drives, for which 12% is a pretty slick deal. If I hadn't just bought a three pack of ink I'd also plan on using this coupon. I guess what I am saying is, this is a nice deal for anything in the store, and it only comes around two or three times a year so get going.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
