What time do Black Friday sales start? An online and in-store breakdown

Don't miss our Liveblog, all day November 28!

This year, retailers have opened up shopping earlier than ever, with several stores offering Pre-Black Friday deals online as early as Monday. The local mall is also opening at an unprecedented time, unbolting the doors at 4 AM to get customers in! With every retailer opening at a different time and offering online deals at all hours of the night you almost need an air traffic controller to keep it straight. Thankfully, WalletPop bunkered down and found out when you need to battle off your tryptophan-induced daze to score your Black Friday Deals!

Sears (re)joins the layaway revival

Nearly two decades after Sears discontinued its layaway plan, the pre-payment service will be available again starting Sunday for customers who want to put money down on items and get them later.

Where Layaway Reigns

Sears did away with layaway nearly twenty years ago (at least for most products except fine jewelry), but now is jumping back on the bandwagon as of Sunday. Except for major appliances and home electronics (like that flat-screen you can't afford), customers will be able to put money down on an item to retrieve later, for just a low fee but no interest.

    Michael Dwyer, AP

K-Mart got back on the layaway bandwagon in mid-October, and has been touting its revival in ads that encourage shoppers to come and shop early for holiday wares.

    Mark Humphrey, AP

Monroe Milstein, founder, CEO and president of Burlington Coat Factory, has long had a layaway program, which is 30 days for regular merchandise and 90 days for Baby Depot items. There is a $5.00 service fee.

    Daniel Hulshizer, AP

TJ Maxx has also had a layaway program all along, which requires 10 percent down and pick-up with full payment within 30 days. No fee is specified on the company's Web site.

    Elise Amendola, AP

Marshalls, owned by the same parent company as TJ Maxx, has a similar layaway policy.

    Paul Sakuma, AP

The Web has also taken to layaway, as services like eLayaway.com offer the ability to use a third-party service for layaway-type purchases.

    eLayaway.com

Wal-Mart used to have a robust layaway service, but did away with it in 2006 and has yet to revive it. Other retailers, like Circuit City and JC Penney, also discontinued their programs.

    Paul Sakuma, AP

Target never got on the layaway bandwagon at all, and has made no indication that it plans to hop aboard anytime soon.

    Tony Gutierrez, AP

Sears never fully left layaway completely -- it has been offering it for fine jewelry since 1989 -- but now it will be there for customers who want anything but home appliances and home electronics.

Why is Sears back in the layaway game? Have you seen the stock market ticker lately? As the economy sours and consumer dollars stay in their wallets, Sears is jumping on the return to layaway bandwagon with K-Mart, Burlington Coat Factory, Marshall's and TJ Maxx. Yet to return to layaway this holiday season: Toys 'R Us, Wal-Mart, Target and JC Penney.

WalletPop named layaway one of the most underrated things in America in a recent series, and also labeled it, "the new black."

Take advantage of special friends-and-family pricing

Filed under: Bargains, Shopping, Black Friday

Friends and Family SignThe holiday season is already upon us, a reminder that those of us who need to purchase gifts should get our butts in gear unless navigating a packed mall is our idea of a good time.

While Black Friday is a the most publicized shopping day of the year and still one of the best times to pick up deals on electronics, friends-and-family events remain one of my favorite times to buy gifts. Traditionally shoppers would have to spend precious time making new friends and rekindling old relationships to get invitations to special friends-and-family events, but the Internet has changed all of that.

The users over at Slickdeals.net have taken it upon themselves to pull together the most detailed list of friends-and-family deals to help you to get the most bang for your buck!

Here are a few of the "Friends and Family" offers currently available.
  • Beauty.com
  • Bloomingdale's
  • Sears
  • Eddie Bauer
  • Banana Republic, Gap, Old Navy
  • Christmas Tree Shops
  • Cole Haan
  • Cost Plus
  • Crazy 8
  • Gymboree
  • Harry and David
  • Joann
  • Kmart
  • Kohls
  • Lane Bryant
  • Mandalay Bay
  • Sephora.com
  • The Limited
There are already over 20 stores offering discounts to friends and family members, with discounts ranging from 10 to 50% off! The full details for these deals, as well as coupons, are available at Slickdeals.net.

Many of these friends-and-family offers can be used online as well as in your local store. Be sure to check the restrictions and times as most of these deals are only good for a few days in November. Additionally some stores, like Sears, have a special after-hour's event just for friends and family. Finally, don't worry about making up an employee name to whom you are third cousin twice removed; once you have the coupon, the stores couldn't care less how you got it.

Black Friday ads leaked! News on Sears, CVS, Walgreens, Ralph Lauren and more

Black Friday shirt at gottadeal.comAfter a month filled with more financial turmoil than most of us can stomach, there is good news at the end of the tunnel: The first batch of Black Friday ads have begun to surface. In spite of -- and likely because of --the dour retail predictions extending through the third quarter of next year, retailers are cutting prices to coax consumers into their stores. Remember, you can keep track on our running scorecard of Black Friday deals and discounts.

Let's jump right into the leaked ads!

Sears

Sears is the first department store to have a leaked ad
this year but the prices for HDTVs and GPS units are much higher than we expected. Thankfully I don't see Sears setting the bar for HDTV prices this season. Dan de Grandpre from Dealnews.com also weighed in on the rumored sales prices for us, stating, "Sears, which is struggling, has been irrelevant to most tech buyers since the 1980s. In fact, many of its purported Black Friday TV "deals" are the same as or higher than prices you'd find on a comparison engine like PriceGrabber."

That said, don't count Sears out of your Black Friday plans completely; Dan recommends Sears for shoppers interested in Kenmore home appliances and Craftsman tools. The leaked ad has great deals on a kitchenware set, several craftsman tools as well as incredible discounts on Kenmore washers and dryers; in fact too many to list here, so go look for yourself!

The Sears ad comes on the heels of Ace Hardware's leaked ad which has been pulled until a final version is released. It appears Sears may be going the same route. According to Dan, Sears is already working on pulling this ad from many sites as they say it doesn't represent their Black Friday offerings. This is one of the reasons why Dealnews.com doesn't post leaked ads. Let's hope Sears takes this ad back to the drawing board and starts cutting prices across the board.

What other stores have been leaked?

Fantastic Freebies: Master padlock at Sears

Every day, WalletPop will be bringing you information about a fantastic freebie. Like what you see? Check back tomorrow for more!

I'm normally skeptical of online coupons because there have been a few cases of strange people posting coupons on the internet that aren't real, creating awkward situations for consumers and the effected retailers. However this one is on the Sears.com website, so I'm assuming it's OK.

If you print out this coupon and head over to a Sears hardware store, you can get a 1.5" or 1.75" Master padlock. It's only valid through September 13th.

Whole Home Cotton Blanket: King Size! $11.97

If you're in the market for a new blanket, you may want to check out this king size Whole Home Cotton Blanket, $11.97 -- marked down from $49.99 (which, granted, seems like a complete rip-off). If you live near Sears (Please accept my apologies!) and don't want to pay a shipping fee, you can arrange for in-store pick-up. Here's the description from the website:

It's the perfect year 'round blanket. Woven for strength as well as breathability. All natural cotton, will not pill. Superior detailing. Thermal weave for all seasons. Supercharge your stimulus rebate at select retailers

In the next few weeks, economic stimulus checks will begin hitting mailboxes and bank accounts across America. Like all good Americans, you should be ready to spend your check as soon as it arrives in order to stimulate the economy. Several retailers have already announced programs to lure shoppers through their doors with stimulus incentives.

Both Kroger and Sears are offering 10% bonuses, in the form of gift cards to anyone who signs over their stimulus check. If you want to get in on the spending but received your economic stimulus check via direct deposit, you can still take part in the "deal" via check or debit card.

I'm going to go out on a limb and predict the future, in May and June, we will see loads of check fraud as retailers have untrained clerks accepting checks for over $1,000, just wait and see.

The real question which you need to ask yourself is, whether this additional 10% bonus is worth spending your government windfall, rather than tackling debt. While these gift cards have no fees or expiration dates, cards are easy to lose and misplace, costing you a nice chunk of change. Also even though gift cards tell the holder to, "treat the same as cash," in my case, a gift card gives me a feeling that I can buy whatever I want since it isn't really money, often leading to frivolous purchases. If you find that you had similar feelings with the last gift card grandma sent you on your birthday, this deal may not be for you.

Citibank saves the day, refunds tv purchase for Sears shopper

Sometimes all it takes is a little pressure to get the wheels of a corporation moving. It turns out that shortly after the story of Tom, a Sears customer who was charged $1070 for a TV he never received, gained traction in the media, Mark Ennis, from the Presidential office at Citibank service contacted him. Mark had tried calling the Sears store where Tom purchased the TV but was given the same treatment Tom experienced. Undeterred Mark went "off script" and pulled the records for every Tom who purchased a TV on "Black Friday" in order to find out what went wrong on the order.

It turns out that just after the first TV was refunded, it was re-rung, resulting in the outstanding charge to Tom's Sears card. None of the individuals Tom spoke to over the past 4 months looked past the initial refund transaction to see what was really happening. If they had spent an additional 5 minutes investigating the billing issue, Tom's problems could have been solved months ago. Thankfully the story has a happy ending, Tom is getting a refund for his undelivered TV and some Sears employees will likely be getting a refresher course in customer service. That is if they aren't shown the door for this heinous neglect of customer service. Bravo to Mark for helping out the consumer and making extra effort along the way. We need more people like you in corporations.

Sears won't issue refund for TV paid for but never delivered

Update; no thanks to Sears, Citibank officials have stepped in to resolve this dilemma. Read about it here:

Just in case you need another reason not to use a store branded credit card, a Sears card holder, Tom, is still waiting for a refund on a TV that he ordered last November at his local store. After finding out that Sears didn't have the specially priced TV he wanted in stock on Black Friday, the store agreed to order one for him. He went ahead and paid for the $1,070 TV with his store credit card.

The customer left for a week long vacation expecting to pick up his new TV upon his return. However the TV was still unavailable. At this point, he was able to negotiate a lower price on a similar TV by speaking with the manager, for which he also paid. He went home with his new TV to bask in its glow.

He soon found out that Sears had not refunded the original purchase price of $1,070 for the set he had purchased on Black Friday, a TV he has never taken delivery of. He has tried speaking to the manager at the local store as well as the customer support for his Sears card, but no one can seem to get their act together and issue a refund. Tom already disputed the charge with the "Disputes" department for his Sears Card but is consistently hung up on, as there is no hold queue for the department. Contacting the local manager has proved fruitless as well, as her phone rings continuously.

Right now the customer is out $1,070.74. It is ridiculous that no one at Sears can step outside the script to help resolve a major purchase for this man. To get closure he may find it necessary to take Sears to small claims court or to approach his State Attorney General.

In Ohio, for example, one can file a complaint online and sit back while the AG's office does all the heavy lifting for you. Tom might also call his local news team -- I am sure they have a "Call for Action" segment that this would fit into quite nicely.

He would have been well advised to use a major credit card instead of a store card for this purchase, so that he could better challenge this charge. Store cards are notorious for having high rates, and in this case have a vested interest in not helping him with the dispute.

Now is the time to buy that lawn mower

Filed under: Bargains, Home, Daily Deal

Deal of the day for Wednesday, Februrary 20th: Lawn experts will tell you that one key to a good lawn is a mower with sharp blades and enough power to cut crisply through even the toughest spring grass. Is yours up to the task?

If not, now is a good time to shop for a replacement, as companies clear out 2007 models. For example, Sears has an on line special until the end of the week on a nice 6.5 hp, Briggs & Stratton-powered Craftsman mower for only $269.88, over $60 below list. The machine is self-propelled and offers both bagging and mulching options.

Regular cutting, before the grass grows too tall, is also essential to a healthy lawn, so making the task easier for the mower is important. A self-propelled mower can take a lot of work out of mowing. I like the muching option, too; why toss out the nutrients in grass clippings?

Even mowing sounds like fun, this deep into winter. I can almost smell the freshly cut grass.
