Where to get the cheapest prints from your digital pictures

picture of picturesMy wife is a scrapbook fiend, we likely print more pictures per year than many of you have in your entire life! Because of this addiction, we have spent a considerable amount of time looking at the various ways and places to get our pictures printed. We have explored printing photos at home as well as the more traditional avenue of getting prints at local stores and online vendors. While I was researching the cost per print of ordering for this post, my wife was able to rattle off the price for single, bulk, one hour and overnight processing of most of the local stores.

Let's take a look at the costs of getting your photos printed.

Do it at Home based on purchasing the ink and paper for at least 100 prints at a time.
  • Inkjet starting at 15 cents per print and $50 for a printer.
  • Dye sublimation starting at 28 cents per print and $150 for a printer.

ILovePhotos and Picasa: Free programs to keep your photos organized

It's hard to imagine the degree to which the internet and personal computers have changed photography. Once upon a time (about ten years ago), hard copy photos were treasured keepsakes. They were irreplaceable, and families would often come together or fall apart over the distribution of favorite snapshots.

In my house, this was a particularly difficult thing. After my parents died, some of my relatives descended upon my family's collection of old pictures and, under the pretense of "making copies," began to abscond with original photos. I managed to hold onto a few keepsakes, but many of my originals have become lost to the fleet fingers of fellow family historians.

Santa and SavanaAre you caught up in the holiday race to see who can spend the most money and reap the most toys? If you have mistakenly found yourself dedicated to the consumerist side of the holidays you might be missing the boat.

What has been lost in this yearly drive to create joy via the purchase of consumer goods? It could be the idea that we need to take time to focus on friends, family and the greater meaning of love. As discussed in an article by Jeffrey Strain at The Street.com, the holidays can be experienced with extra meaning and focus by using and creating traditions which are not based upon the amazing shrinking dollar.

Share and edit your photos online, for free

You don't still schlep photos around to family gathering, buy multiple prints to mail, and put up with poorly framed shots? I kicked the habit a couple of years ago with a free Flickr account. Flickr.com, a Yahoo company, is one of many photo hosting sites that allow you to upload your digital photos and control who can log on to view them.

The service is free, my favorite price. This gives me a good backup for these photos, and makes it a snap to share photos with my friends and family. I send them the link and they can enjoy at their leisure.

Now, Flickr has added a very valuable feature, the ability to edit the snapshots online. Say Uncle Fred leaves Aunt Clara for your new uncle Elmer. A simple crop and he's history, leaving Aunt Clara alone in the photo, ready for her eHarmony.com application.

After uploading your photos, you can also order prints, greeting cards and more, directly through links in the program.

Don't let those treasured family pics languish in the fragile world of your hard drive. Take advantage of the largesse of Yahoo or a competitor and store your shots online.
