Gazelle: A better way to recycle your electronics

Filed under: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Technology, Fantastic Freebies

After doing a round of holiday cleaning at our apartment, I discovered a treasure trove of gadgets which still worked, but no longer met my needs. Thankfully I also found Gazelle.com, a company that buys old electronics for resale or recycle.

I tested out Gazelle.com with three items I had on hand; an old camera without a power adapter, a Dell PDA with all original wires and manuals, and a digital video camera with power cord. For my collection of slightly used gadgets I am being paid $124, more than I could likely get on eBay due to the lack of accessories.

Selling your stuff to Gazelle is simple:
  1. Look up your item on the Gazelle site.
  2. Answer a few questions about the quality and accessories.
  3. Click "calculate" and see what Gazelle will offer you.
  4. Send your items back to Gazelle with free shipping label.
  5. Get paid via check, Paypal or Amazon gift card.
Currently Gazelle buys goods from 11 categories including; video games and consoles, GPS units, phones, movies, digital cameras, laptops and more. If the item you want to sell isn't already in the catalog you can request a customized quote, which is calculated within 24 hours.

FREE! Uniden 2.4GHz Cordless Phone

I've never heard of Uniden but then again, what do you expect in a free cordless phone? Regularly priced at $24.95, Circuit City is offering the phone for $14.99. And it's free after the mail-in rebate. And if you need anything else from from the site, orders over $24 ship free.

The features on this phone are pretty basic but do you really need lots of gadgets on your home phone? This has caller ID, 10 memory dial locations, and it's headset compatible, in case you're so cool/busy that you can't even hold a phone while you talk.

A new and improved 'Do Not Call' coming soon to a dinnertime near you?

Filed under: Extracurriculars, Ripoffs and Scams

Last week, a bill that would enhance the current federal do-not-call registry passed the House of Representatives. The bill is officially titled: "The Do-Not-Call Improvement Act of 2007." The next step is passing the Senate, and this bill would be a definite improvement for consumers.

Currently, consumers register for the do-not-call list, and telemarketers are prohibited from calling their homes except under certain circumstances. After five years, phone numbers are removed from the registry unless consumers re-register.

The pending legislation would discontinue the five year expiration on the registration. Essentially, once you register, you're on the list until you tell them otherwise. Message to telemarketers: Don't ever call us again.
