Black Friday roundup is back, Best Buy, Target, Staples and more

Black Friday is almost here with every day bringing more ads full of deep discounts. While many of these ads are unconfirmed leaks from stores like Best Buy, Circuit City and Target; several store including Staples and Dell have confirmed their ads with Dealnews.com. Additionally, T-Mobile and Bare Necessities have shared their Black Friday specials directly with WalletPop.com readers.

As we approach the week of Black Friday there will be plenty more ads coming out and more information on when to get in line or to log on in order to get the best deals. We are still waiting to see what Amazon and Walmart as well as many others bring to the table this year. Keep checking back, we'll be sure to let you know what to look for on Black Friday as well as what deals to expect on Cyber Monday!

Best Buy
Best Buy's leaked ad brings several tempting door busters to the table, including a 50" plasma for $899 and a 32" LCD for $399. There's a well equipped Toshiba laptop sporting a 15.4' screen, dual core processor, 3 GB of ram and a 160 GB hard drive for $379! There's also one of the best deals on an Xbox 360 so far, including two extra games on top of those which come with the holiday bundle for a total of four games in the $299 package.

Circuit City
Circuit City ups the ante this year by offering several name-brand HDTV deals on Black Friday including a 42" Samsung Plasma for $699 and a 32" Toshiba for $449! At these prices, there's no reason to go with a store brand when you can enjoy the quality of Samsung or Toshiba. Circuit City, which has filed for bankruptcy and is closing many stores, is also discounting numerous video games and Blu-Ray titles for Black Friday. Even though many of these titles have been out for a few months, they make a great gift to go with one of the many Xbox 360 deals going on.

Don't spend a fortune on your back-to-school computer

laptopChances are, unless your budding intellectual is heading off this fall to become a graphic designer or a mechanical engineer, you don't need to take out a second mortgage just to get them a new computer.

The Dollar Stretcher provides plenty of reasons why every student should have a computer at their disposal when they enter the hallowed halls of Academe, despite the already high price tag that comes with college. Today there are more choices than ever before when it comes to finding a computer that fits your student's needs.

And as The Dollar Stretcher also points out, forgoing a Mac and picking up discounted student software at the college bookstore will save you lots right upfront.

The article points out a cool new model of laptops called subnotebooks that are small, low-powered, low-cost laptops which are suitable for handling typical student activities such as paper writing and web surfing. If you are looking for a more traditional notebook this fall there are still plenty of deals to be had on laptops and desktops which pack a little more punch. Purchasing a refurbished laptop or PC is a great way to save and still get a decently spec'ed out machine.

XP holdouts unite

The movement to convince Microsoft to continue XP past this June, when it was supposed to fade away as Vista became supreme, just became a lot more real to me. I bought a new Gateway with Vista with my tax rebate money. I was never that thrilled with XP, but after six days on Vista I am running back.

I turned to this story from InfoWorld in January, which outlines how businesses are begging Microsoft to keep XP. They've even started a petition to send to Microsoft. I quickly signed it.

Over the last few days we've seen the Blue Screen of Death five times. Vista, it turns out, doesn't like Dreamweaver. Vista also rejects my new Canon All-in-One out of hand. It's not just that this program or printer doesn't work. Vista collapses at the mere thought of them on the same computer. Needless to say, Canon's excellent photo-editing software is out of the question. Remarkably, so is have a picture in an email signature -- something XP handled with no problem.

Dell Vostro 200 Minitower

If you're in the market for a computer, Dell's probably your best bet: You can mess around with trying to buy one at Wal-Mart, as I did, or some other discounter but for customer service and quality, Dell's the way to go.

Apparently it can be pretty cheap too: For $379, you can get a Vostro 200 Minitower for $379 -- regularly $629. And unlike most computers you find under the $500 mark, it includes a 19 inch flat panel monitor and all the software you need to get started: no Microsoft Word but you can probably make due with Microsoft Works, which is included.

It also comes with Dell's usual strong warranty/service deal and a keyboard and mouse. You'll need to buy speakers on your own but that's not a big deal: You can get those for $10.99.

A great deal on a desktop computer from Dell

A couple of weeks ago, a friend needed help buying a new desktop computer. Her computer was really old. We're talking ancient here... going on 10 years old. Can you believe it still worked??? The main drawback to buying a computer right now is finding one that doesn't have Microsoft Vista on it. Even after a year on the shelves, users still find Vista difficult to use and are having lots of conflicts with peripherals and older software.

The hunt was on to find a computer that was sold with Windows XP. And believe it or not, Dell has this option. Was it too good to be true? Was it a refurbished model or something? No. It was for real. A brand spanking new computer with Windows XP.

What's more, the computer was being sold for a song. She got outfitted with a brand new computer and 17 inch flat panel monitor for only about $550 after we selected a couple of minor custom options. The only thing her computer might be missing is Microsoft Office. The inexpensive computers come with Microsoft Works. That was okay for my friend, because she doesn't do any heavy duty word processing or spreadsheets, but if you need Office you'll have to plan on spending about $149 to add it on.

Even better.... Her computer was scheduled for delivery in a couple of weeks. It was there in less than a week. Talk about a great experience purchasing from Dell! They offered everything we could want: a great new computer, a fantastic price, the ability to still get Windows XP, quick delivery, and easy set-up of the system.
