This year, retailers have opened up shopping earlier than ever, with several stores offering Pre-Black Friday deals online as early as Monday. The local mall is also opening at an unprecedented time, unbolting the doors at 4 AM to get customers in! With every retailer opening at a different time and offering online deals at all hours of the night you almost need an air traffic controller to keep it straight. Thankfully, WalletPop bunkered down and found out when you need to battle off your tryptophan-induced daze to score your Black Friday Deals!

Gift returns: Which retailers make the grade?

About $219.1 billion worth of merchandise is expected to be returned this year according to the National Retail Federation. Of that, $47.1 billion worth of stuff will come back to stores during the holiday season. With seasonal sales expected to be the worst in decades, 11% of retailers say they are going to loosen their return policies, more than triple the number from a year earlier. Making it easier to bring back unwanted goods could make companies more vulnerable to fraudulent returns, but that's a risk the companies are willing to take given their declining sales.

"Even though many chains intend to be less restrictive in enforcing return policies to the letter, don't expect them to start posting signs to trumpet any change in policy," writes Tod Marks, a blogger for Consumer Reports. "Retailers aren't about to relinquish their right to review on a case-by-case-basis any return that clashes with the store's written policy."

Not all return policies are created equal. Some companies are far more flexible than others which important to for shoppers to remember. Rules about specific types of merchandise are available on the Web site of most retailers. A valid receipt is needed for a full refund.

Black Friday is almost here with every day bringing more ads full of deep discounts. While many of these ads are unconfirmed leaks from stores like Best Buy, Circuit City and Target; several store including Staples and Dell have confirmed their ads with Dealnews.com. Additionally, T-Mobile and Bare Necessities have shared their Black Friday specials directly with WalletPop.com readers.

As we approach the week of Black Friday there will be plenty more ads coming out and more information on when to get in line or to log on in order to get the best deals. We are still waiting to see what Amazon and Walmart as well as many others bring to the table this year. Keep checking back, we'll be sure to let you know what to look for on Black Friday as well as what deals to expect on Cyber Monday!

Best Buy
Best Buy's leaked ad brings several tempting door busters to the table, including a 50" plasma for $899 and a 32" LCD for $399. There's a well equipped Toshiba laptop sporting a 15.4' screen, dual core processor, 3 GB of ram and a 160 GB hard drive for $379! There's also one of the best deals on an Xbox 360 so far, including two extra games on top of those which come with the holiday bundle for a total of four games in the $299 package.

Circuit City
Circuit City ups the ante this year by offering several name-brand HDTV deals on Black Friday including a 42" Samsung Plasma for $699 and a 32" Toshiba for $449! At these prices, there's no reason to go with a store brand when you can enjoy the quality of Samsung or Toshiba. Circuit City, which has filed for bankruptcy and is closing many stores, is also discounting numerous video games and Blu-Ray titles for Black Friday. Even though many of these titles have been out for a few months, they make a great gift to go with one of the many Xbox 360 deals going on.

Target pushes aggressive price cuts

Target wants to be sure it gets your holiday business this year. The retail giant has seen its profits take a nosedive this year, as shoppers cut back to just the essentials. Nearly half the store's revenue comes from nonessentials, though, like fashion and trendy housewares. To be sure they move items like this over the next month, Target will be offering some serious bargains.

The company says that it will match prices with its chief rival, Wal-Mart, in local markets, and will offer daily rotating value items on its website, while aggressively cutting prices on popular national brands. Though Target has cut prices around the holidays in previous years, Chief Executive Gregg Steinhafel says the company is really ramping up its promotions for 2008, and expects to be the price leader on many gift items.

This makes Target very attractive for holiday shoppers this year. I remember doing most of my shopping there last year anyway, and I saved myself 10% extra by opening the Target credit card on the day I spent $500 on gifts for my family. Then I paid it off and closed the account. If you can exercise discipline, there's no reason not to go for the in-store credit card offers, especially if you can take 10 or more percent off a large purchase. With the Target credit card profits dropping sharply recently, I wouldn't be surprised to see the store offer even better incentives to qualified applicants. Don't forget to check the website for those rotating value items, too.

Mervyns sues ex-owners, and other tales of buyout woes

mervynsWhen Target Stores put Mervyns on the block to sell in 2004, you'd think it would be a case of buyout-ee beware. Any entity willing to pick up the tab on a chain of failing department stores has its own best interests at heart, and is not riding in as a White Knight to save the day. But now the former owners of Mervyns are suing the private equity group that bought it for putting it out of business.

As detailed in the Wall St. Journal, (subscription required) the Mervyns team claims that Target set up the stores to fail when it cut a deal with a group of investors. The two-part transaction sold the stores and the real estate separately. The new owners then leased back the properties to the stores and effectively put them out of business with increased fees. Mervyns went into bankruptcy over the summer and will be shutting down a slew of stores.

As retail and restaurant businesses continue to fail in this sour economy, you're going to see a lot more of these stories cropping up, and probably a lot more hurt feelings. It's an economic lesson that most of us can learn something from, even for personal finances. When you are in economic trouble and seek help, the person or entity who kicks in cash to help you is likely going to take more from you in the end.

Mervyns was valuable mostly because of its real estate holdings, and so the equity group came in and took what it could from it. Mervyns failed, but that's not going to cause the owners to lose much sleep, because they can just rent out the properties to somebody else. The current mortgage crisis is being caused by similar thinking, as homeowners fail on their loans. The banks were willing to dole out bad loans because, in the end, they will own the property and can resell it for some value.

Brooklyn's IKEA Opening: Urban Grit and 99-Cent Mac and Cheese

Ikea BroklynGrand openings in New York are usually something to avoid at all costs, but yesterday, I had promised my 2-year-old a trip to the park and it was raining. So we all packed into the car for a 5-minute trip to the new IKEA in Red Hook, Brooklyn to check out their indoor play land.

In other towns, the opening of a big-box store might not be so game-changing, but IKEA has been controversial from the start because it is so not Red Hook, where even the shooting of "The Sopranos" was squashed by locals. A Fairway supermarket snuck in, just a few blocks away, but with its fresh produce and artsy feel, it has not engendered any bad feelings.

IKEA, on the other hand, is a giant blue and yellow monstrosity the peeks out from between abandoned factory buildings and loading dock cranes. It's parking lots cover wide swaths of shoreline and are ringed by low-slung townhouses in disrepair -- the gentrified converted lofts and luxury condos are still a few blocks over.

Judging by the crowd on opening day, it's going to be a huge success and a huge nightmare at the same time, just like the few other big-box stores in Brooklyn. Any time you mix huge volumes of people with discount merchandise, you're going to move a lot of product off the shelves and it's going to be messy.

Women's bathing suits for under $20

The daily deal for May 23, 2008 is the the Mossimo zebra tankini bathing suit, Target, $19.99.

I was flipping through In Style magazine and an article on the latest styles in summer swimsuits caught my eye. Normally, these articles are disheartening to read this time of year because my body is so pasty. Besides, the pre-summer exercise program has gotten off to a slow start. When you add the shock of what women's bathing suits costs these days, reading an article about swimsuit fashions can be doubly depressing.

This story was different: mixed in with the designer bathing suits upwards of $200 were several cute swimsuits from Target, priced in the $20 to $30 range. At your typical department store, it's hard to find a decent bathing suit for under $50, even if you wait till the July 4th sales.

When I went to Target's web site, there were so many bathing suits to choose from, it took a while to find any of those I admired in the magazine. After a while, I went back to the home page, clicked on women, then swim shop, which brought me to a page where I could choose the preferred style. It seems that most of the swimsuits featured in In Style were sold out, no surprise, but there are plenty of others still available, mostly for about $19.99, and I haven't even checked out the store yet.

More cheap prescription drugs coming to Wal-Mart

When Wal-Mart first lowered the price of certain generic prescription drugs to $4 for a 30-day supply, consumers wondered how they could do it. Wouldn't they lose money? Of course they would lose money on the prescription, but the master of merchandising knew they'd more than make up for those losses on what you'd purchase while you were waiting for your prescription.

Now Wal-Mart has announced that it's going to make even more drugs available for $4 (30 day supply) or $10 (90 day supply). These aren't your newest, fanciest drugs. But they are common generics that many people take daily. They will now have over 1,000 prescription drugs available at bargain basement prices.

And there's another bright side for consumers: Even if you don't shop at Wal-Mart, you might benefit. Consumers filling their prescriptions at Target also receive the same bargain pricing, in an effort to compete with Wal-Mart. And I'm sure there are other chains that have also followed suit, giving consumers several options for extremely affordable prescription drugs.

Counting the days at Target

Attention all Target Shoppers: You can get some great deals at the popular discounter, but because of the haphazard way the store marks down its merchandise, there had better be some method to your madness.

This Wisebread blog post provides the key to the puzzle. Among other tips, shoppers are advised to understand the daily markdowns; Target marks down different segments of merchandise on different days of the week.

To wit:
  • Monday: Electronics, Kids clothing and stationary (Cards, gift wrapping paper, etc.).
  • Tuesday: Domestics, women's clothing, pets and Market (food items,etc).
  • Wednesday: men's clothing, toys, lawn & garden, health and beauty items.
  • Thursday: House wares, lingerie, sporting goods, shoes, music, DVDs, books and luggage.
  • Friday: Auto, cosmetics, hardware, and jewelry.
For the best deals, get there early the day of the markdown. And be sure to make liberal use of the in-store scanners to find deals that haven't been otherwise marked...that's another Target retailing puzzle that can work in your favor.

Cheap baby gear even cheaper, Target

Daily Deal: Target is having a sale on baby gear. It seems they have one of these every few weeks. I get regular emails since I bought a few items in the past year following the birth of my son. And, I have to say, Target really does have a great selection and terrific prices on all things baby.

Now the stuff is on sale, plus you get free shipping if you spend more than $50, which is easy to do on baby gear. Check it out if you are in need of a baby gift or if it's time to upgrade your stroller.

The glider and ottoman shown here is now on sale for $199, $30 off the full price. Having it shipped for free is a nice bonus, especially for all you 9-month-pregnant moms who are probably so done with shopping for furniture about now. This is one item you are unlikely to get as a gift. A glider, while not the most beautiful piece of furniture in the world, comes in very handy when there is a newborn around. Before you buy this one, though, check Craig's List in your area to see if you can pick up a used one for $50 or less.
