Olive Garden disses Playboy model Kendra Wilkinson

Filed under: Extracurriculars, Ripoffs and Scams

Most companies would do anything for a celebrity endorsement, but the Olive Garden is looking askance at the over-friendly overtures from Playboy model Kendra Wilkinson, who just loves her some Olive Garden. The Wall St. Journal reports that the unofficial association is turning into unwelcome attention and is making the restaurant nervous.

Wilkinson, for her part, remains unabashed. The 23-year-old, who lives with Hugh Hefner and two other of his girlfriends, takes every opportunity to talk about how much she loves the food at the Italian eatery -- even when traveling in Italy. She has sponsored a modeling contest for Olive Garden waitresses, talked about the restaurant on TV and her MySpace page and generally caused the owners of the Olive Garden, the Darden Restaurant group, which also owns Red Lobster, to blush.

Get free magazines by pretending to own an iPhone

Business WeekZinio, a purveyor of digital magazines has recently rolled out the ability for iPhone users to read current copies for free. They already provide a cheaper subscription price for many digital magazines striking a cord with eco and fiscally conscious consumers but this move should get way more exposure for the company. How this turns that into revenue is another question; but that doesn't matter to you! You just want to know how to get free versions of Business Week and Playboy without owning an iPhone.

That's right, Zinio is giving away the full current issue of magazines such as Business Week, Playboy, PC Magazine and Popular Mechanics to name a few to anyone who can at least pretend to be an iPhone owner. While the promotion is geared at those browsing on the iPhone, users of the popular web browser Firefox can follow the instructions from ismashiphone to basically tell the Zinio website that your computer is an iPhone. While the instructions may look a little scary, have no fear as they are easy to follow. After making those changes you simply need to visit Zinio's iPhone site to snag your free magazines.

If you needed another reason to switch to Firefox for your browsing needs, the ability to view numerous popular magazines for free should push you over the edge. This functionality is available for users of several other web browsers as well but not Internet Explorer. This is definitely a cool way to get magazines for free and certainly beats getting a haircut every three and a half weeks just to see the latest issues of your favorite magazine! As several of the magazines are adults only, don't go checking this out on your work computer.

Crazy Congressman looks to ban sale of porn on military bases

Here's an item that should remind you of our country's Puritan routes.

Rep. Paul Broun, a Georgia Republican, has introduced a bill that would ban the sale of soft-core pornographic magazines on military bases.

According to Broun, "Allowing sale of pornography on military bases has harmed military men and women by escalating the number of violent, sexual crimes, feeding a base addiction, eroding the family as the primary building block of society, and denigrating the moral standing of our troops both here and abroad."

The bill would amend a 1997 law that banned more hardcore magazines,

I hate to be that guy but, given the state our of wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, is banning the sale of pornography on bases really the most pressing issue related to the military. Maybe we should, oh, I don't know, focus on making sure that our troops have adequate body armor?

Soldiers have enjoyed looking at pictures of nude or scantily clad women for a long time. According to IMBD, "During World War II, Miss West's name was applied to various pieces of military equipment and was thus listed in Webster's New International Dictionary, Second Edition. The Royal Air Force named its inflatable life jackets "Mae Wests," and United States Army soldiers referred to twin-turreted combat tanks also as "Mae Wests."

I say let the people have their porn!
