Fantastic Freebies: Bunch of perfume samples!

I've written before that a savvy freebie scout could go years without buying most toiletries and fragrances. This fantastic offer from Walgreen's and Coty could give you a good start. Fill out this form, and you'll get free samples of:
  • Glow by JLO
  • Glow After Dark by JLO
  • Intimately Beckham
  • Nautica Bermuda Blue
  • Nautica Island Voyage
  • Shania Starlight
If that link doesn't work, try this one. My personal favorite budget fragrance is still Britney Spears Au Naturale, which you can make at home: Just mix one can of Red Bull and a pack of Newport Lights in a blender and place the concoction in an empty Windex Bottle. Spray as needed, drink as necessary.

I'm always on the lookout for new colognes. While it can be nice to have a "signature scent", I think it's classier to mix it up now and then. A cost-effective way to do that is free samples.

For the ladies, Clinique is currently offering a free purse-sized bottle (not just the little thimble-sizes!) of their 'clinique happy." perfume spray.

Click here (PDF file) to print out the coupon. Just take it to the Clinique counter next time you're in a department store.

Colognes can get so boring. I mean, sometimes you just don't want to smell sexy. You want to smell like ... burning rubber? Or an ash tray. Or perhaps even fresh bread. A company called Weird Fragrances is offering free unisex cologne samples in exchange for your mailing address and email address. They aren't available in stores, but Weird Fragrances will email you when they are.

The choices: Grease Monkey, The Love of Money, Pumpkin Spice, Cajun Delight, Burning Rubber, Fourth of July, Ash Tray, Magazine Pages, Fresh Bread, and Hot Cookies.

I can't imagine that these will be a hit. Pumpkin spice is great for a candle, but for a person? Do you have a desire to cuddle up next to someone who smells like an ash tray?

But it's a free sample, so I'm willing to give it a shot.

A quick tip: If you like requesting free samples, set up a separate email account for them so that you won't find your inbox inundated with "special offers."

Men's Colognes: Less expensive and you won't smell like a gigolo!

When I was in elementary school, I had a gym teacher named Mr. Donaldson. He was nice enough for a guy who wore sweatpants to work, but he epitomized cheesy. Although it was the mid-1980's, he seemed trapped in the Seventies. He sported a fu manchu moustache, had long blond hair parted in the middle, and reeked of Brut.

When most people imagine a guy wearing too much cologne, Mediterranean cabs driver or sleazy European gigolos come to mind. For me, the eye-watering stench of too much cologne will always be linked with Mr. Donaldson, the gym teacher who could disinfect a scrape merely by standing near it.

Because of the deep psychological damage inflicted by Mr. Donaldson, I avoided cologne for years. My father, who used it sparingly, gave me a bottle of English Leather when I was fifteen. I used it as fire starter. Later, when I was 21, I inherited a big bottle of Zizanie; I finished it off about fifteen years later. Along the way, I got a bottle of Polo Safari from a cousin (I regifted it after I discovered that it made my cat sneeze) and a bottle of Drakkar Noir from a friend (my roommate ended up stealing it). To be honest, I didn't feel a pressing need to refill my cologne stocks. I use a simple deodorant, and don't feel much of a need for anything else.

A sign of consumer sanity: Designer perfumes on the decline

In a country where the national past time is doing exceptionally dumb things with money, I'm always on the lookout for little glimmers of hope: signs that someone, somewhere, isn't acting a like a complete idiot.

I found one in the Wall Street Journal today, an article (subscription required) that discusses the decline in the growth of designer perfumes and colognes. The market for moderately-overpriced colognes and perfumes licensed by brands like Hermes and Gucci has become saturated. Add to that products bearing the names and likenesses of celebrities like Celine Dion, Donald Trump, David Beckham, and Britney Spears, and some of the top fashion houses are fleeing to the realm of really really expensive products to differentiate themselves.

In addition, the cost of launching a new fragrance can rise above $50 million -- further evidence of just what a bad deal these scents are for consumers.

Scents put out by top designers have been a way for broke and getting broker consumers to feel like they're part of the luxury crowd -- They may not be able to afford a $5 thousand Gucci bag, but they'll be happy to pay 18% APR for a bottle of the perfume.

Here's what consumers need to know: A lot of these scents are licensed out to other companies who design, market, and distribute the fragrance. Britney Spears did not actually design the Curious perfume, nor is that what she smells like. If you want to smell like Britney, but a pack of Newports and a bottle of Jack Daniels. It's a lot cheaper, and a whole lot more authentic.

Honestly folks, $50+ colognes and perfumes are a waste of money unless you're loaded. By sorting through drug or even discount stores, you'll be able to find something that suits you well for a fraction of the cost.
