Fantastic Freebies: Seattle's Best Coffee samples

Sure, there may be some quibbling out there about whether Seattle's Best Coffee is really Seattle's best (and as it's now owned by Seattle native Starbucks, well, that's just a conundrum, ain't it?). But free coffee is free coffee, and I, for one, am not going to quibble about that.

Getting a free sample is as easy as filling out your name, address and email -- you'll get to choose between Henry's Blend ("uncommonly smooth"), Seattle's Best Blend ("captivating aroma and a smooth finish") and Vanilla Bean ("perfectly combines smooth coffee flavor with vanilla"). Is Seattle's Best Coffee "a whole different cup"? Soon, you'll know.

Free museums on first weekend of month courtesy of B of A

Filed under: Bargains, Daily Deal, Travel, Fantastic Freebies

natural history museumDon't fret if you didn't celebrate Museum Day, the round-the-country free-admission extravaganza arranged by the Smithsonian on September 27. Several corporations have been stepping up so you can steep yourself in culture, admission-free, on other dates.

If you carry a Bank of America card, you're eligible for free entry to more than 70 museums on the first weekend each month. The lineup includes museums in 18 states, but those living close to the coasts will have better luck finding a participating venue nearby. The only states in the country's interior represented are Arizona, Illinois, Michigan and Texas.

This promotion, begun in May, lasts through next April. It's a vast expansion of the bank's sponsorship in years before, which was limited to a month. Either a Bank of America credit or check card gets you in.

About the book:

Master of suspense Dean Koontz creates an undercurrent of terror in this story set deep in the dark and troubled town of Black River.

Burned-out Hollywood screenwriter Bo Aikens is fed up with life in Los Angeles. He heads out of the hustle and bustle of the big city and arrives in picturesque Black River in Northern California, seeking relaxation and artistic inspiration. In small, idyllic Black River, nearly everyone is happy, contented, and welcoming of strangers. But despite the beautiful setting, Bo begins to feel unsettled after several disturbing incidents. He discovers that all of his money has been transferred to a bank account in Black River, and a house has been purchased for him by someone on "his" instructions.

Troubled by various, peculiar twists of fate, Bo decides to leave Black River. As he becomes entangled in a nightmarish plot, preventing his return home, it suddenly seems clear to Bo that his perfect little hideaway captures more than just the imagination of its visitors.

Fantastic Freebies: Champion pumpkin seeds

Filed under: Food, Home, Fantastic Freebies

Is your family crazy for pumpkins? Walking around my neighborhood, it seems this year that everyone decided to bring the pumpkin patch to their own front yard; I'm wondering the intelligence of trekking 25 miles to the traditional pumpkin farm, complete with hay ride, when I could just grab the wagon and walk two blocks to the huge patch at the new neighborhood eco-village. Next year: I want to plant a patch of my own.

That's why I'm taking champion pumpkin farmer Brian Christiansen -- "the surgeon that grows giant pumpkins" -- up on his offer of free seeds. He's generously offering to dry seeds from his enormous, prize-winning pumpkins and send them to you. All you have to do is mail him a self-addressed, stamped bubble pack (a SASBP). He doesn't expect anything in return, though you're welcome to trade him for seeds you have kept. But please include a note. Tell him WalletPop sent you, and that you want to bring the pumpkin patch to your neighborhood.

Looking for some free weekend fun? Museum Day is Saturday.

Filed under: Bargains, Extracurriculars, Daily Deal, Travel, Fantastic Freebies

Unsure what to do this weekend? Let me plan it for you.

Don't take me too seriously. I can hardly handle navigating my own weekends, and I'd break under the pressure if even one or two readers asked me for help. But I do have an idea, which I found on a fellow writer's blog, Atlanta On the Cheap, just to give credit where credit is due. And it's a web site that any WalletPop reader living in Atlanta should know about.

But I digress. This Saturday is Museum Day, sponsored by Smithsonian Magazine and the esteemed Smithsonian Museum, arguably the greatest museum ever and a must-see anytime you visit Washington, D.C.
