As someone who goes through nine gallons of milk in an average week, buying two at a time to cut down on trips to the store, getting the best deal in high on my weekly shopping list. Many said "It'll never happen," and thought..."no one will listen..." But a survey by the Avon Foundation for Women released on Monday found a quarter of states in the U.S. have either reduced or eliminated screening mammography and other early detection services for women under 50.

And opponents of the panel's guidelines are crying foul.

According to the Avon survey, states like California, New York, Florida, Illinois and Michigan are among those that have made changes in their state's breast-cancer screening programs since the government panel released its guidelines. This move has angered and confused women.
Continue reading Your money or your breast? But experts say many of the deceptively healthy foods parents toss in their carts should be left on the grocery store shelves.

So WalletPop sat down with registered dietician Susan Burke March, MS, RD, LD/N, CDE, author of Making Weight Control Second Nature: Living Thin Naturally to find out what so-called "healthy" foods parents should be wary of buying for their children.

Kid's yogurt
March says this is the equivalent of sprinkling lots of sugar and candy on top of a cup of steamed broccoli. "All the sugar that's in many brands turns something that's full of calcium, protein, vitamin D, and magnesium into dessert." The biggest offenders: yogurt "fun foods."

"Read the labels of yogurt in plastic tubes that are meant to be frozen and thrown into kids' lunchboxes. After the first ingredient, which as hoped for, is milk, come high fructose corn syrup and sugar, artificial flavorings and colors," says March.

A better option: March suggests staying wholesome by staying simple. "Freeze any wholesome real yogurt and put in your kid's knapsack. You'll ditch all the additives and send him to school with a truly healthy treat."

It keeps your schedule, makes sure you never miss an important email, helps you keep tabs on your kids -- and increases your thumb dexterity.

But smartphones aren't just for emailing, texting or even talking anymore. The flood of "apps" (applications) -- software programs made by third-party developers that you can download onto your phone -- allows users to do everything from making a Cosmopolitan to learning to speak Russian.

No one's denying that a bartender app doesn't come in handy. But there are also numerous apps that can help you improve your health -- and perhaps even lose a few pounds.

Here's our top 10 list of health apps to consider getting now.

Continue reading 10 smartphone apps that are good for your health

10 smartphone apps that are good for your health originally appeared on WalletPop Blog on Fri, 26 Feb 2010 10:00:00 EST. But getting 500% of a day's worth of vitamin C might not be necessary -- or have any health benefits at all. In fact, several experts say getting mega-doses of some vitamins might even be risky, not to mention costly.
Here are four so-called "healthy" foods that actually may be harmful to your health ... and your wallet:
Continue reading Four 'healthy' foods that aren't so healthy after all

Four 'healthy' foods that aren't so healthy after all originally appeared on WalletPop Blog on Thu, 18 Feb 2010 09:00:00 EST. But in an age where you're watching every penny, it can be equally hard to cough up between $3.50 and $4 for a box of 15 cookies -- even if those Samoas are perhaps the best thing that will ever cross your lips.

Despite their undeniable tastiness, there's no denying that, at $3.50 to $4 per box, Girl Scout cookies can be costly. But it might soften the blow to know where your cookie money really goes.
Continue reading Girl Scout cookies by the numbers: Just where do all those dollars go?

Girl Scout cookies by the numbers: Just where do all those dollars go? originally appeared on WalletPop Blog on Sat, 06 Feb 2010 09:00:00 EST. No, we're not talking about summer solstice or the dog days of summer.

Feb. 14, Valentine's Day, the day devoted to red-hot romance, love and hearts, is notoriously hot, hot, hot. And whether lovers are toting home heart shaped boxes of chocolate under their arms, ordering in heart shaped pizzas or going out for a romantic dinner, food plays a big role in Valentine's celebrations.

So WalletPop thought we'd give lovers a helping hand this year. With the help of Dr. Melody Hart a practitioner at ChicagoHealers.com, we compiled a shopping list of must-have aphrodisiac foods. And, as an added bonus, most of these foods are pulling double duty, offering numerous health benefits, too.
Continue reading Aphrodisiac foods cheaper than you think for Valentine's Day romance

Aphrodisiac foods cheaper than you think for Valentine's Day romance originally appeared on WalletPop Blog on Fri, 05 Feb 2010 17:00:00 EST. Instead of pinching pennies, research suggests converting them into big bills.

Researchers from New York University found we tend to hang onto $50s, $20s and even $10s longer than we do $1s and $5s. The theory: It's more painful to part with a big bill than it is a little one.

"People tend to over-value large bills relative to an equivalent sum of money in smaller denominations because of self-control reasons," says one of the study's authors, Joydeep Srivastava, professor of marketing at University of Maryland. That "overvaluing" leads us to make more impulse purchase with small bills or "change" than if we the same amount of money (or even a few dollars less) in larger bills.
But too often Americans don't realize a plunging credit score can cost them big bucks on insurance premiums.

One of the biggest mistakes insurers say people make is not realizing when their credit score is tanking.

"Credit scores factor heavily into your rate," says Ashley M. Hunter, a construction-risk insurance specialist who owns HM Risk Group in Austin, Texas. That's because in the eyes of your insurer, if you've missed a few payments to your credit card company or have written a lot of bad checks (that wound up in collection), chances are you'll do the same thing to them.

Continue reading Auto insurance premiums tied to credit score

Auto insurance premiums tied to credit score originally appeared on WalletPop Blog on Fri, 29 Jan 2010 17:00:00 EST. But in 1994 Stella Liebeck sued McDonald's because she suffered burns when she spilled her hot joe on her lap while pulling out of the fast food giant's parking lot, prompting the application of stickers reminding customers that the hot coffee they're ordering will indeed be served hot.

But coffee isn't the oddest -- or most menacing -- defendant in lawsuits of late. American courts are over-crowded with plaintiffs looking for restitution as a result of a bevy of unusual circumstances. So inquiring minds asked "What were some of the most outrageous or scary lawsuits of 2009?"
Continue reading Victims sue over too-hot hash browns, slippery toilet floors, and heartbreak

Victims sue over too-hot hash browns, slippery toilet floors, and heartbreak originally appeared on WalletPop Blog on Fri, 29 Jan 2010 14:00:00 EST. With a record number of mortgage defaults and declared bankruptcies, it's a safe bet that more and more of those who once had good - or even average - credit are now living with a bad credit score.

For many, their good credit score and on-time payment status are like a badge of honor. Or at least, they used to be. And while in "the old days" (before the recession) many might not think twice of proclaiming "I have excellent credit" to passersby and family members alike, few would relish sharing news of their personal bankruptcy with the world - including family and the parents at school pickup.

Continue reading Life after bankruptcy: living well with bad credit

Life after bankruptcy: living well with bad credit originally appeared on WalletPop Blog on Thu, 28 Jan 2010 13:00:00 EST. Some credit card issuers, like Bank of America, are sending cardholders their statements in plain white envelopes that appear to be nothing more than a solicitation -- or junk. All the warnings issued to their kids that "TV can rot your brain" just might be true -- sort of -- after all. At least, according to a new study it can.

Watching television has already been linked in studies to an increased risk of heart disease and obesity. But many of those studies included participants who were already overweight. Now, a new study examined TV's impact on longevity with participants who started the study at a healthy weight and had no prior history of heart disease. And the numbers aren't good.

The study, published in the current issue of Circulation, a journal of the American Heart Association, says each hour a day spent watching TV was linked with an 18% greater risk of dying from cardiovascular disease, an 11% greater risk of all causes of death, and a 9% increased risk of death from cancer.

TV watchers who spent more than four hours a day showed an 80% greater risk of death from cardiovascular disease and a 46% higher risk of all causes of death, compared with those who watched fewer than two hours a day, suggesting that being sedentary could lessen your longevity.

The researchers weren't surprised all that sitting doesn't help your muscles any. Doctors say muscle contractions are necessary for vital processes like breaking down glucose and using it for energy.
Continue reading Mom was right: Too much TV CAN kill you

Mom was right: Too much TV CAN kill you originally appeared on WalletPop Blog on Mon, 18 Jan 2010 12:00:00 EST. And when the clock struck midnight signaling 2010 had begun, this year was no exception.

There's good reason to want to quit. Tobacco continues to be the leading cause of preventable death in America, with more than 400,000 Americans dying of tobacco-related disease each year, including heart disease, cancers, emphysema and stroke.
Continue reading Kick butts with cheap quit-smoking programs

Kick butts with cheap quit-smoking programs originally appeared on WalletPop Blog on Mon, 18 Jan 2010 11:00:00 EST. "I gained 10 pounds just to have the surgery," she says. Byrd's scale read 239 when she had the surgery. "Now I weigh 159."

Her need to pack on even more weight in order to be labeled "obese" or "morbidly obese" has been a dilemma facing many Americans. That is, until weight loss surgery procedures got a face lift, making them safer for people hoping to trim down -- without first bulking up.

Typically thought of as a last-ditch effort for those needing to shed large amounts of weight, surgical procedures are becoming an option for overweight (not obese) people, and those suffering from diabetes.
It turns out popular high blood pressure drugs known as angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs) significantly cut patients' chances of developing Alzheimer's disease and dementia.

But we say, why choose? Why not do both? Especially since these two resolutions aren't mutually exclusive.

According to a survey from Kijiji.com, the average household has approximately 35 unused items sitting around the house with a resale value of $670. That's the equivalent of about 489 loaves of bread or 172 gallons of gas or 97 movie tickets! Selling those 35 (or more) unneeded items could put some much-needed dough in your wallet.
