Feline's Pride expands recall of raw cat food
Filed under: Consumer Ally, In the News
Feline's Pride has expanded its July 1 recall to include another batch of raw cat food because of a possible salmonella contamination.Neither the Buffalo, N.Y. company nor the U.S. Food and Drug Administration have had reports of salmonella infection from the product. A Salmonella infection in humans can cause nausea, vomiting, cramps, diarrhea, fever and headache. In pets the symptoms are similar including lethargy, diarrhea, fever and vomiting, says the FDA.Feline's Pride is working with the FDA to determine the source. The expanded recall involves a batch of cat food made on June 21 of Feline's Pride Raw food with ground bone for cats and kittens, Natural Chicken Forumula in 2.5-pound bags. The cat food, in uncoded, plastic containers, was shipped June 21 through June 26. The previous recall was the same product in a batch produced on June 10.
The FDA recommends consumers thoroughly wash their hands with soap and water after touching the cat food as a preventive measure.
Feline's Pride owner Shelby Gomas told Consumer Ally that almost all of the recalled product has already been consumed. The cat food is made in small batches -- 1,000 to 1,500 pounds each -- frozen, then shipped to consumers nationwide on an as-ordered basis. Once thawed, the cat food has a shelf life of about a week.
Gomas said the meat used in the product batch had passed the U.S. Department of Agriculture testing for human consumption as required by law, but some of it failed a different test by the FDA, which oversees manufacturing of raw pet food products.
"We're caught in the middle," he says, adding that the 5-year-old company up until now had a "pristine reputation" with no recalls.

I am personally more concerned with the well being of people than cats or dogs if I had to choose I would say that a dog is a better pet than a cat with the exception of a few breeds

Who cares if you're an animal hater, Gary. Why would you even take the time to read an article like this in the first place?

the salmonella more than likely would not bother the cats at all (or dogs) but if people were so sloppy as to stick their hands in their mouth or not clean up after putting out raw food..oh well. if you handle raw chicken ever you are exposed to salmonella. just don't be a pig. i have fed raw for 7 or 8 yrs (dogs, not cats but raw is raw) and have never had anyone in the house get sick from feeding it.

Heck, one of our cats, Leo, has been catching and eating rodents for 17 years and has never been sick. Our vet says it's perfectly fine, as long as you check your cat for worms every now and then. What the heck do you think cats ate several thousands of years ago before we "domesticated" them? Or they domesticated US..... ;-)

Nothing personal but i could care less if all the cats in the country died. On the other hand dogs need loving care and affection. They're the ones that tell you some one is breaking into your house, that there's smoke in your house or can come to your defense. If they find anything wrong with dog food those mfg's should be made to eat it then hung by the neck until dead.

Fido - you are an idiot. Cats are smarter than what you think.
Mine have alerted me several times on things that were happening.

I have one cat and four dogs. The cat sleeps on my bed and waits at the window for us to come home. He is as loving and loyal as any dog. Our cat even senses when my daughter is about to have a seizure and warns us. Pretty smart cat if you ask me.

Fido your an idiot, cats can and do alert you to danger, they just dont have loud annoying mouths like a dog. My bedroom window was slightly open late at night and my cat was laying in it. All the sudden she went crazy, stood up hissing very angry and hitting the screen. It was enough to waken me and make me look out to see someone walking off my property. My cats even let me know when the mailman is at the door, they run to me then back to the window. I bet nobody would care if you died you jerk.

Dear Fido, it must be said again.................. the phrase is not "I could care less". The correct phrasing is "I couldn't care less". If you "could care less" -- that means you care some. Get a clue you cat-hater!

Hey Fido, My cat woke me up when there was a fire. Your statements are ignorant & the fact that you hate cats is irrelevant to this post & it's really sad you would even make a statement like that. Way to go at making yourself look like a fool.

Cats and dogs are beautiful animals deserving of our care and affection. If you don't like one or the other, then don't have one.
