HVP Salmonella recall is expanding rapidly -- thousands of products could be affected
Filed under: Food, Recalls, Health, Consumer Ally
A recent string of food recalls over the potential for Salmonella poisoning that started with little detail or connection has grown into a massive series of recalls affecting potentially thousands of products using an obscure ingredient that is tainted: Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein (HVP).HVP, a flavor enhancer that typically contains MSG and is found in a wide variety of foods including chips and dips, salad dressings, soups and even burritos. Because the ingredient can be used in almost anything, the scope is potentially staggering.
Over the past week, at least a half-dozen companies have announced related recalls and given the enormity of the list of the lot numbers being recalled by the manufacturer -- Basic Food Flavors of Las Vegas -- it's apparent it's going to keep growing.
Among the product recalls announced by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration so far:
- Reser's potato salads and dips
- Marzetti refrigerated dips
- Castella chicken soup base
- Hawaiian brand potato chips and onion rings
- A wide range of Follow Your Heart brand prepared food products
A database of products known to have used this ingredient is now available on the FDA site.
Because the FDA does not have the authority to issue recalls itself, the agency urges companies it knows have a product with health concerns to issue recall notices (the FDA then posts those notices). Because the releases are done by the individual companies they lack uniformity and don't always identify the source of potential contamination or identify it in the same way, creating some confusion about links between different recalls.
UPDATE: The FDA later in the day issued a statement acknowledging the scope of the potential contamination.
"Our investigators were able to identify this problem before any illnesses occurred," FDA commissioner Dr. Margaret A. Hamburg said in the statement. "While the investigation is continuing, the agency is supporting reasonable steps to continue to protect the public health."
The FDA said that it investigated the Basic Food Flavors plant after one of its customers reported finding Salmonella Tennessee in one of the lots of HVP.
The agency took samples and found that strain of Salmonella in the company's equipment. All HVP made their since Sept. 17, 2009 is being recalled.
Salmonella poisoning can cause a wide range of gastrointestinal problems and can be particularly dangerous to the young, old and those with compromised immune systems.
Benjamin Chapman, a professor at North Carolina State University specializing in food safety, said with recalls like this it is difficult to know just how large they can become.
"We don't really know where products with HVP get (the ingredient from) without them coming forward with a recall," he said. "With any ingredient recall it takes time for any company using it to be notified and to determine what product they used it in and then recall it."
That cumbersome process -- which the FDA can accelerate behind-the-scenes by getting a company's distribution list and contacting its customers -- is why the announcements come out in dribs and drabs. In the case of the huge Peanut Corporation of America recall last year, deaths and numerous illnesses along with the company's financial failure heightened the FDA's role and helped show the enormity of the outbreak.

Don't these companies test anything anymore? Wouldn't be alot cheaper to hire a few chemists than to pay out millions or have to "dump" tainted products. And where is the FDA in all of this?

Where's the FDA in all this? Trying to compete with the pharmaceutical companies for new talent. If you were a new student coming out of college or grad school w/ $40,000 (or more) in student loans, would you work for the FDA or $50,000/ year or Pfizer for $100,000. You do the math.
The FDA is severely under-staffed, but trust me they are doing a whole lot better under this administration than the previous pro-business/ less regulation attitude of the last one. And that is not a political dig, just a fact. Overall political philosophy affects policy and the capacity to enforce the regulations on the books, and create new ones that reflect the changes of the time.

I am truly a believer in Advanced Cleanse ( http://tr.im/advancedcleanse ) I started taking it mid-April and on the 5th of May I had lost almost 10lbs. Now, I had been watching my diet and exercising, but the immediate difference from Colo Detox was obvious. One of my problem areas is my belly, I was always bloated, feeling like I was about 9 months pregnant and honestly, I looked it too! After starting with the cleanse, my bloating went down in a week. I knew that I needed to cleanse, but this just reassured me that not only I needed to do so but I needed to do so more often. Advanced Cleanse ( http://tr.im/advancedcleanse ) also helped me to feel more satisfied and my skin was looking better - what an awesome way to feel!!!

Please... don't hesitate to tell us exactly what kind of "test" you think they should perform on every last bit of food they produce? Be specific, please.

And just how are these tainted products destroyed? That could open a whole other can of worms! I hope they are burned and not buried in the ground.... or....thrown into rivers, etc.! Think about it! All that nastiness dumped into areas where we possibly use the water for drinking, the ground for growing food products, raising animals.

No, they don't have to test anything, they have us, we're their testers. It cuts down on man power. We buy the product, if we get sick, we file a lawsuit against the product. Then they get the lot number to do a recall. It's like everything else not being tested. The U.S. has fallen through the cracks. Nothing matters about the welfare of the American people anymore!

Hawaiian Kettle Potato Chip, HUH!!! LOL!!!
How can they call this Hawaiian Chips when it's mad and manufactured in Las Vegas????
Las Vegas should be sued for defaming Hawaii on this ludicrous chips. This chip company should've named their chip to Bunny Ranch chips.

To answer your question, the FDA is only applicable if the product was sold between states. I.E. if the food is made in Hawaii, and sold in Hawaii, then it is up to local and state health departments to test them. Not really sure on the details in this case because I live in a foreign country and haven't had the chance to review the details, but that could account for some of the error. Also, the purview of each Agency changes dramatically as ingredients are changed. For example, a pizza containing pepperoni (or any other type of meat for that matter) falls under the jurisdiction of the USDA because meat is an agricultural product. For more information I suggest reading Through the Bureaucratic Jungle; a Guide for the Confused Consumer
Magazine article by Dori Stehlin; FDA Consumer, Vol. 20, July-August 1986. Hope this helps.

I am an Air Force and I used to have gastroenteritis something awful until I tried new COLON BLOW. It not only helped me with that bloated feeling, but I'm now helping the U.S. Economy by employing an army of plumbers and septic tank engineers to remove the resultant "night soil" from my property.

Just goes to show you how many food products actually have MSG. Notice how many are "healthy" type products.

Uhh.... no offense, but they named five items and the article says "typically contains." I don't automatically translate that into a panic level of insanity.

MSG is the worst thing ever created. They add it to the food because it makes you eat more. Which of course promotes obesity. It should be banned from all food. It's purpose is to make you eat more, buy more, and increase their profits.

Please share with us... where DO you get your information from, some guy that you met on a bus? MSG doesn't make you eat more. You may want to take a second and actually look it up someplace that isn't a "the sky is falling" website. Try wikipedia for convenience.

You need to do some basic research. MSG is a plant derivitive from seaweed. It is a flavor enhancer just as salt is. It is not a chemical in any form. It is as natural as rain. Please learn about something b4 you spout trivial innacurate information. people are overweight because they cannot control themselves and exercise little. if the person has a slower metabolism and they now it then they need to adjust thoer food intake accordingly, and stop trying to blame others for thier fat problems.

Hey, Mark,
Botulism is natural, too, but I don't want it in my food.

to Mark...Scientific studies prove it is true. Like I said Lots of scientific testing has been done to prove that MSG increases appetite, and promotes obesity. Check AOL search..Scientific testing on MSG inducing increased appetite. Lots of sources of testing. And it also is a deterent to exercise. It made the test animals more sedentary too which contributed to their weight gain. They add it food to increase sales. Odd, can people be allergic to the rain? I have heard that people can be allergic to MSG. hmmm... Natural doesn't mean good for you.

Actually, in my Biology of the Brain class (and other classes) they classified MSG as a "excita-something" -- firstly, MSG tastes like a mild salt that lasts only a split second, so to get a REALLY salty flavor one can use a lot of it (Chinese food, chips, dips, etc.). Then it heads strait to your sensory receptors in the pleasure center of the brain and says "Wow that was good!" So the actual flavor is minimal and simply "salt" but the chemical reaction in the brain makes a bunch of synapses in the pleasure centers fire off. This can increase cravings for said food so you can keep getting that pleasure sensation -- OR in the case of some folk with particular brain-chemical issues, it can cause other problems. For example some folks complain they get headaches after eating food with a lot of MSG, and I'd look to people with ADHD and other brain chemistry issues for other reactions. I used to live in NYC and the empty BARRELS of MSG outside certain "Chinese food" restaurants made it pretty plain that there was a problem. It's derived from plants--but so is cocaine, and they're not incredibly dissimilar in how they're made either. Are they chemicals too? Yep. Even if plant-derived. Just because it's not synthesized in a lab doesn't make it safe.
