1.5 million Graco strollers recalled after amputations of kids' fingertips
Filed under: Family Money, Recalls, Consumer Ally
Two months after one of the trendiest names in children's products recalled 1 million strollers after reports of youngsters' fingers being lopped off, another 1.5 million strollers are being recalled for a similar reason.Graco Children's Products is recalling certain models of its Passage, Alano and Spree strollers and travel systems after five children had their fingertips cut off when the stroller's canopy was being opened or closed, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said. Two others suffered cuts.
Those who have the strollers are asked to stop using them until they receive a repair kit from Graco.
"This is now the second major recall of a stroller due to fingertip amputation or laceration hazards," CPSC spokesman Scott Wolfson told WalletPop. "The agency is taking a broader look at this issue to ensure that young children are completely safe in and around all strollers."
In November, Maclaren recalled its strollers after reports of fingertip amputations in the hinges involved in the opening and closing of the strollers.
Not all Passage, Alano and Spree units are subject to the recall. To determine if you have one of the affected strollers, visit Graco's site. Two different types of hinge were used on these strollers. Only those with a plastic, jointed hinge with indented canopy positioning notches are subject to this recall.
The recalled strollers were made in China between October 2004 and February 2008. Both the model number and the date of manufacture can be found on the inside lower part of the frame above the rear wheels.
Major retailers sold the strollers for $80-$90; the travel system sold for $150-$200.
To order a repair kit, call Graco weekdays between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Eastern at (800) 345-4109 or visit the company's recall site.

Keep making things in China and putting everyone in harm's way. Bring back industry to the USA. Pay a little more for better quality.

Oh for pete's sakes, when are PARENTS going to take responsibility for being careful regarding their children! How simple is it to just check first, to make sure your child's hands and fingers are not near these hinges when opening or closing the canopy. A butter knife can be hazardous too, if left where a child can reach it. Shall we recall and ban all butter knives too? How totally rediculous.

I agree.
Given that 1.5M strollers are being recalled, and allowing for those that haven't sold yet, it seems that hundreds of thousands of parents are using these without ANY problems. If they were such a danger, there should be hundreds of thousands of amputation incidents. Not five.
Again, reathea, I agree. Utterly ridiculous.

I also agree 100%. It was the same with the incident with the vertical blinds, where some children were choking. That was a tragedy but it also can be avoided by simply putting your child out of reach of such hazards. We over-react on a routine basis but in our lawsuit-happy nation, deep pockets have to be PC.

I would hope that when your child ( if you even had one) had their finger tip chopped of you could still be so damned smug.

Is it too much to ask for mommies and daddies to keep the tots' little fingers out of harm's way ?
What other mechanical devices are they exposed to ?
Auto doors , home doors , for that matter , present opportunities for injury to soft little fingers . How about the blender ?
For goodness sake folks , the manufacturer might be liable for defective operation or failure , but nobody can design a device that some fool won't operate with their child in or on it or
" Helping mommy " open your stroller .
It just can't be done ! Take care of your child , the maker can't whether the company be in China or Canada .

There is definately something wrong with parents today! You would think that parents would know better than to place cribs next to windows.I believe we were all told once if you can help it infants beds should be away from windows because of drafts. Now it seems parents don't have that little bit of common sense now they need to be told that strings and blinds should not be within their reach?!! Are you kidding me?I feel the same way about the stroller recall. Parents have been allowed to just sit back, relax, let your kids do whatever they want if they get hurt they'll learn and parents will sue and make some money and the companies you have been providing us with products we all use and love will have to recall them all and try to figure out some other way to design things which will in turn bite us all in the butt for the extra cost!! Simple to just watch your kids if you cant handle that, don't have any!!

I saw a child fall off a bicycle the other day and break their arm.. When are they going to recall bicycles? The same for the skateboards.
Why is it when a child gets hurts they recall somethings and not others?

GOOD GRIEF!!!!!!!!!! Do people not have any common sense anymore???!!!!! If parents can't make sure their baby's fingers are securely away from the hinges of a stroller, they shouldn't have children. When I was growing up, my parents made sure we were NOT in any danger. They took RESPONSIBILITY!!! It appears that is something that is NOT done by parents in today's society. It's ALWAYS somebody's fault. PARENTS: Take the time to insure your OWN baby's safety when doing anything. That's part of PARENTHOOD!!! Pretty soon anything and everything will be recalled......maybe even parents!! Now that's an idea!!!!!!!!

I grew up when PARENTS were supposed to have sense enough to keep their children safe! PARENTS! We had ventian blinds all over our house & not 1 kid out of 6 children strangled, because if our mom saw us fiddling with them she collared us and gave us what-for! Cabinets weren't locked, and no one got poisoned from drain cleaner because we were told NO! NO!, and not to touch the stuff because it was poison and would frikkin KILL us.....and we listened! Riding a bike didn't require helmet and armor, a pogo stick was fun- not dangerous,
As an adult I took sole responsibility for my child's safety. I checked any baby equipment for hazards BEFORE I bought it. I checked my house also, and fixed anything I thought might be a danger to my baby/child. I even checked on her wher she got quiet, because any parent knows that usually that means their child is into something they shouldn't be. I even checked her as she slept, to make sure she was not "smothered" in blankets.
Nowadays parents expect that everybody else will do this for them. That's stupid. No manufacturer ever designs something with the intention to harm children. They make the safest product they know how to. But the bucks stops with the parents. PARENTS, do the world(and your child) a big favor and check things before you buy, and after in case they wear out and become hazards. Check your home for choking, strangulation, electric and poison hazards. And then YOU fix them! YOU, the parents, are ultimately the ones responsible for your child's safety. NOT the manufacturers. Period.

This is ridiculous! Pretty soon, no manufacturer will be able to sell products in the US because the cost of doing business here with the threat of these recalls hanging over their heads will be too high. It is the PARENT'S responsibility to make sure they read the instructions and use the product safely. There are a zillion hinges in this world. A zillion ways to hurt yourself. If you smash your finger in a door are you going to demand that all the car, cabinet, home and building doors you encounter be recalled? No! You're going to be more aware next time and teach your children to do the same.

I had two Graco strollers for my two kids and NEVER had a problem.......They are excellent strollers and served me well......this has nothing to do with the quality or the design of the strollers, there is absolutely nothing lacking in this product line.
The IDIOT PARENTS are solely to blame for these little kids fingers being amputated, they should be charged with child endangerment period......

China bashing is a form of racism. The stroller was designed here in the good old USA. It is the design that is the problem. Not its manufacturing. Graco was acquired by Newell as part of the purchase of Rubbermaid in 1999, after which Newell Rubbermaid was created. Oh yes, China is helping to keep our country afloat by lending us money. Don't bite the hand that feeds you!

So I suppose the Graco manufacturer should include additional packaging instructions for the NEGLIGENT PARENTS:
1. An IMPORTANT note to the parents of the child who will be riding in this stroller......Be sure to keep FINGERS as well as ALL OTHER BODY PARTS out of the area as you adjust the stroller as serious injury could occur!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
2. Please simply tune into the mode of COMMON SENSE while using this Graco stroller.

A baby's fingers should not be in danger while in any device that was created to be their environment at any time. They should also not be in danger from cadmium used in the welding of trinkets. You can try to blame parents if you wish but, when a company such as Graco designs a product that is built to their specs then they are entirely at fault. It is not a chinese issue but rather a greed issue and Graco or any other culprit should be sued off the face of the earht.
