Dehumidifiers that can start fires recalled by consumer protection agency
Filed under: Recalls, Consumer Ally
Nearly 100,000 dehumidifiers are being recalled after reports of 11 incidents of property damage, including four building fires, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said. The Chinese-made dehumidifiers, manufactured by LG Electronics Tianjin Appliance Co., were sold under the Goldstar and Comfort-Aire brands at Walmart, Home Depot and Heat Controller Inc. The dehumidifiers also are being recalled by Health Canada.
Those who have the dehumidifiers are asked to stop using them immediately.
In a news release, the CPSC said the power connector to the unit's compressor can short circuit, which can cause a fire.
The models being recalled have a 30-pint reservoir, a red shut-off button, a front loading bucket as well as fan and humidity controls. They were sold for $140 to $150 between January 2007 and June 2008.
To see if your dehumidifier is affected, go to this site set up by LG and enter your brand, model and serial model numbers. The serial number can be seen when the bucket is removed.
For those who register with the recall, LG will provide repairs at an approved service center to modify the unit. They should not be brought back to the retailer and no proof of purchase is necessary.
For more information, call LG at 877-220-0479 weekdays between 9 a.m. and 8 p.m. Eastern Time and between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Saturdays.

Here we go with China made products again.....why doesn't the president stick his nose in here and make manufacturers police their item made over there or stop them all together. China must face up to the fact that they have to build a better - safer product or get left in the cold!! I for one try not to buy something made in China!!

I agree with you, unfortunately most everything you buy now comes from China. It is cheap and retailers make a fortune off of it. I think we should dump all foreign trade and start making things in America again and then we would have jobs again, but no one ever listens to me.

if it says Made In China, we need to boycott! That is the only way the USA will start bringing businesses back to the USofA. Stop buying, they'll stop this madness! Nothing is made here anymore and everything is more dangerous. Products, food, even pet food. China cares nothing about safety!!

If it was made in America nobody could afford it, so we would never have to worry about recalls then. Its called the UNIONS THAT DROVE THINGS OUT OF THE USA.
CAROLYN HOW MANY AMERICAN CARS GET RECALLED?

the unions DID NOT drive business out of here!!!! greed did! and walmart. walmart insisted companies lower their prices or they would go with someone else. unions have been helping make a middle class for a 100 years or more. if you go to a grocery store in st louis mo, everyone at the store is union and making a decent wage. the store prices are the same there as they are at any nonunion grocer anywhere else in the state. GREED is all that is behind moving jobs away.

Our government is going to let china kill us one way or another. When are WE AMERICANS going to stand up and say enough is enough???? Why can't we unite and force our government to put such restrictsions on imports, that they will just stop sending their trash to kill us with. I wonder how much kick backs our house and senate are getting to allow all this garbage into our homes?????

alexdads: Had corporate America not screwed the common laborer 7 ways to Sunday to begin with, we never would have witnessed the rise of the labor unions, period. And, there are STILL way too many American companies who continue to use and abuse their employees to this very day (THINK WALMART) and I'd love to see labor unions go after them, too. As far as motor vehicle recalls go, I have seen my fair share of rice burners being recalled as well; I've seen several foreign-made cars die with only 65,000 miles on them as well. You can have a glitch in ANYTHING, no matter where it's made, but there are certain places of origin, like China, who continually trail the pack. I believe that China doesn't care about safety, particularly safety involving goods made for the United States; it is well-known that they have an ax to grind with this country, so I say, boycott any and every item that comes from China. The only thing big, greedy corporations ever understand is their bottom line; get 'em where it hurts. They'll get the message, loud and clear

My God! When is the Untied States going to tell China, NO MORE IMPORTS FROM YOUR COUNTRY UNTIL YOU CAN MEET OR SURPASS OUR CONSUMER SAFTEY LAWS. This is absoulutely rediculous. Dog food, people food, childrens toys, childerns clothing, comsumer products, what's next their cars and trucks killing and maiming us? Enough is enough. I say if th United States Government won't do anything then we as consumers have to. Boy Cott anything and everything from China! But American.

The USA owes China what? $800 billion? China owns us, get over it. Walmart does big business with China... who is to blame there? The government. What people fail to embrace is that politicians work for us and we can fire them... but it's so much easier to nag and whine on a board. Ah so!

well there's your problem, the whole "made in china" thing, they don't have the same safety standards as we do and all these companies outsourcing to China are more concerned w/making their products cheap and selling them at bloated prices than to be worrying about properly policing their products and quality control
