Kindle sales benefitting from Sony Reader and Nook sellouts

Amazon.com released a statement Monday saying that November was so far the "best sales month ever" for its portable electronic reader, Kindle. Does that mean that Amazon actually released sales numbers? Well, no.

Despite phrases in a press release like "flying off the shelves" and "#1 bestselling product," there were no numbers or quantitative data given. As John Paczkowski of the Wall Street Journal pointed out, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos says he wants to keep "numbers close" to keep Amazon's competitive advantage.

Some analysts say that sales numbers will probably be about 3 million for 2009, slightly higher than previously predicted because of decreased competition.

Apparently Kindle is killing its competitors, mainly because its rivals Sony and Barnes & Noble are already backlogged and can't supply stores or its Web sites.

Although it's good to be a hot item in high demand, it also means delays and frustration for consumers who want to buy an electronic reader for the holidays. If buyers can't find a $259 Barnes & Noble Nook or a $200 Sony Reader, then they will turn to Amazon's ubiquitous Kindle at $259.
