Introducing the Dreamie -- It's like a Snuggie that you sleep in
Filed under: Extracurriculars
Say hello to the spawn of Snuggie: The Dreamie. This person-pocket sleeping bag is the latest branch in a family tree of products that cost virtually nothing to make and depend heavily on adjectives and money-back guarantees to sell. The Dreamie is essentially what we used to call a sleep sack when we spent nights in youth hostels. Take two small sheets, sew the sides and bottom together, fold over the top of one sheet a pillow's length and sew it on both side to form a pocket, and you have a Dreamie. The unspecified fabric is described as silky, which I'd guess is ad-speak for polyester. (There's also the option to upgrade to fleece.)
The finished product, in a "free Dreamie carrying case" (a bag) sells for $19.99, plus $6.99 shipping and handling. But wait, there's more; the company will double the order for an additional shipping and handling fee of $6.99. It comes in white, red, and brown ( in ad-speak, natural ivory, rich espresso and ruby red.)
The Dreamie ad targets couch sleepers, a population that must be so money-unsavvy that they end up living on some poor schmuck's couch because they blew all their money on as-seen-on-TV items such as the Dreamie.
If ever there was an item you could make for yourself, a Dreamie is it. Five minutes, a couple of sheets, a tube of seam glue and you're set. Now all you need is a friend's couch.

The author, Tom, is an inconsiderate and demeaning jerk. While I could care less about the product he is criticizing, I do care when so called "writers" find it necessary to use this forum to demean people who may have found themselves in the unenviable position to have to "crash on a friend's couch." This does not necessarily make them unsavy with money as stated, especially in this economy (or have you not kept up on the news of record numbers of home forclosures?). Keep your pop judgements to yourself and simply critique the item.

I agree with you totally!!!! Just because he doesn't like the product doesn't mean that it is not just what others want. Besides, obviously they have made alot of money on this product and have even come out with snuggies for dogs!!! To each his own!!!

Oh I am glad you responded. I wondered if I was the only person that bothered. While I have been accused of being soft hearted in times past, there are many people who are in a bad situation now. The last thing they need is some judgemental jackass making them feel bad about themselves.

I agree totally! My daughter has seizures and have been so frequent of late that she cannot be left alone per doctors orders. My husband and I take turns in the recliner while she sleeps ON THE COUCH, often in her fleece snuggie (lol).

jami - you gotta be kidding, get over it. This product is a piece of crap. And if you are unfortunate enough to have fallen victim to the bad economy, and had to sleep on a friend's couch, the LAST thing you need is to spend money on this turd - two sheets stuck together, the packaging says its a $100 value??? Anyone who buys this is dumb as a sack of doornails - of course, I said that about the snuggie (a bathrobe turned backwards), but they found a few million dimwits to buy that one.

I think P.T. Barnum said it the best, "There's a sucker born every minute." There really is no accounting for the public's taste.

Actually, P.T. Barnum never said that....http://www.historybuff.com/library/refbarnum.html
Regardless, there are a lot of people out there that apparently like those Snuggie things....go figure. I would imagine there will be a few that buy the Dreamie, and the Ultimate Brownie pan, and Mighty Putty, and Sham-Wow, etc., etc...
A better saying for this discussion would be, "A fool and his money are soon parted" (Thomas Tusser)

LMAO!!! I have a snuggie and I love cheesey products like this! Tom your article cracked me up... I got excited just reading about the dreamie... and will probably purchase it. You're right, I'm not that good with money. But I'm not mad at you, it's my money to do with as I will. Thanks for the laugh, anybody who was offended, should lighten up!

If they could make this bed bug proof, it would be a good answer to the bedbug infestation in NYC hotels.

So you might be able to make one of these yourself. Whoo hoo! I think you might spend more on sheets then you would this item though, barring like, Goodwill or something. (And good luck finding a matching set there. Although a mismatched funky one would be cool.)
Still, I don't see how it's so terrible to sleep on someone's couch. I have to do it quite often. :(
Besides, sleeping bags get too hot.

I'm assuming the writer of this post meant using your own sheets...
Also, I'm pretty sure you can get a cheap set of sheets at target or something for probably $10, and that includes a couple of pillow cases...
And whatever you do, it's probably higher quality than this PoS

..."but wait there's more"...lol ! I'm convinced someone could shellac a turd, mount it on a board and with the right sales pitch some shmuck will by it. Go figure...put a bath robe on backwards, call it some cute name and some dimwit will buy it. I like the part in the ad where they show everyone at the sporting event wearing snuggies (lol)...how embarrassing would that be? You can actually buy a nice sleeping bag for the same money they want for 2 sheets glued together called a Dreamie...UNBELIEVABLE !!

I have made these for my children for years. I put yarn through the sides like the indian strings for decorations on the side. They love them very much.
Last year Walmart came out with little throws that feel like the snuggies do. I gave them each one for Xmas they are like little baby buntings that keep them in them so they can't kick out.
They are really warm.I have one myself. At 74 I need the warmth that I get from them.
Everyone should try to make these. I have a Grandson over 6' tall. I don't close the bottom of his. He wouldn't have any room left to cover with.

This would be GREAT for couchsurfing! My BF and I went on a motorcycle trip last spring and we couchsurfed from Syracuse to Prince Edward Island. You never know what kind of sleeping area the hosts are going to have and the Dreamie would be great to take along! And it doesn't take up much space! (couchsurfing.com if you're interested!)

Dreamies seem like a polyester (less expensive) version of silk Dreamsacks which have been useful to us in the past as travelers. Has anyone out there actually purchased Dreamies who could review the item? Are they really the very generous size of 44" x 89"?
