Junked: 'Cash for Clunkers' not as successful as Feds hoped

Even though last summer's Cash for Clunkers program was rated a success by some, a new report obtained by the Associated Press says the economy might not have fared as well as hoped under "Clunkers."
Wednesday, the AP dug up Federal numbers that showed many of the trades didn't increase fuel efficiency all that much. Many of those trading in gas-guzzlers opted for similar (but brand new) petroleum chuggers that got only a few more miles to the gallon than the clunker.
The Federal data showed the Clunker most often traded in was the Ford 150 pick-up truck. But more than 8,000 of those sent to the scrap pile were replaced with a brand new pick-up truck, netting the consumer the incentive of $3,500 to $4,500 to up their fuel efficiency by no more than three miles at best.
The government also reported spending more than $500,000 in rebates for new vehicles that had equal or worse mileage than the vehicle being traded in. Now an investigation is underway to determine whether the dealer could have been at fault, possibly reporting data incorrectly or using outdated fuel efficiency numbers.
This latest report on the Cash for Clunkers program comes on the news that the average taxpayer paid $24,000 for each car purchased under the program -- whether they rolled out of the showroom behind a new set of wheels or not.
Some 15 other deals in which consumers traded in large pick-up trucks for H3 Hummers are also reported to be under investigation. And even though the Hummer may technically qualify (because of the mileage requirements) it seems hard to believe that's what lawmakers had in mind when they approved this program.

Why would you think HUMMERs should be exempt from the program? You admitted that they qualify because of the mileage requirement, and in fact, they get the same mileage as the #1 purchased vehicle, the Ford F150.
So, did you have any logical reasons for not wanting HUMMERs as part of the program or just a "belief" (as you put it)?

Agreed.
This whole article is written on the basis of the mileage differences for the swaps.
The headline merely says "feds", but upon reading the aricle one realizes it is clear that what is meant is "environmentally minded feds".
This program wasn't meant to be a 'save the earth' policy - it was meant to help give a shot in the arm to the economy.
The article isn't written purely from that perspective.

What a terrible idea this program was. I don't understand why a car in good working order would be scrapped unnecessarily. That car could have been resold to help cover the cost of the program of donated. This program had nothing to do with helping the environment and everything to do with attempting to boost the automobile industry at tax payer's expense. In addition it got a lot of consumers into a car debt when their car was already paid off or close to being paid for.
I'm all for helping the environment, reducing our dependency on foreign oil, and switching to sustainable fuels for energy; this program did not nothing to address those issues.
Please vote for politicians with common sense in your state's upcoming elections.

This clunkers program was one of the dumbest ideas ever ! It was suposed to benifit the US auto industry ;but then it didn't apply to all makes and models of american cars and aplyed to most forien models of cars ! and most of the vehicals sold under the clunkers program were forien cars ,so most of the money from the car sales whent to the forein auto makers ! Anybody with alittle inteligents could see how stupid the program was; in other words the yoyos that came up with the program don't have any inteligents !
Then there is the fact that meny of the new cars get worse gas milage than the older models of the same car ! For example a new 6cylinder mustang should get at least 35-40 miles per gallon on the highway ; but gets les than 30 miles per gallon on the highway!
Then there is the fact that the stupid clunkers program took hundres of thousends of good use cars away from the small used car dealers ! This makes it even harder for the average person to keep a job or go out and look for a job; because the older and some what afordable cars are no longer available to buy ! So the only used cars available at used car dealers are the newer used cars that the average person can't afford to buy !
Then there is the fact that the quality of american cars has gone down hill drasticly over the years ! It used to be you could by a car and drive it for 50 years if you took care of it and now you are lucky to get 7to10 years out of it before it is too rotted out underneath to drive ! Thats were TOYOTA made its mistake buy building a good drive train in a junk steel frame that rotted out in a realy short time !
