Wal-Mart rolling back prices on more than 100 toys
Filed under: Bargains, Saving Money, Shopping, Black Friday
Black Friday seems to be coming early this year. Just in time for the 2009 holiday shopping season, Wal-Mart announced today that its lowering prices on more than 100 toys.
This week, Wal-Mart stores will roll back prices by as much as 20% to 30% on many kid favorites, including Star Wars light sabers and Bakugan starter packs. The price cuts are expected to last through Christmas and are also available online at Walmart.com.
This latest round of rollbacks is in addition to the retailer's previous promotion, advertising 100 toys for $10 and its direct shot at Amazon.com when it started offering 10 hot new books for $10.

Wal-Mart says the most recent rollback is aimed at attracting moms, the member of the family who is most likely to shop for holiday gifts. Moms also tend to shop early, the store says. Based on Wal-Mart's research, more than 50% of moms try to have their holiday shopping done before Thanksgiving.
"We'll offer aggressive pricing on toys this season to ensure moms can afford the gifts that help create a holiday their kids will remember," said Laura Phillips, vice president of toys at Wal-Mart. "We believe moms are looking for toys that not only fulfill their children's holiday wishes, but also create opportunities for role play, pretend and family togetherness."
Some of the toys getting a hefty price tag make-over are:
- Bakugan starter pack for $8. Savings: 33%
- Buzz Lightyear Talking Action Figure for $29. Savings: 17%
- Rocky the Robot for $49. Savings: 17%
- Star Wars Light Saber for $15. Savings: 25%
- Barbie "I Can Be" Playsets with Doll for $15. Savings: 25%
- Playskool Step Start Walk 'N Ride or Ball Popper for $17. Savings: 32%
- Fisher-Price Power Wheels Kawasaki KFX Ride-On for $178. Savings: 10%
- FurReal Friends Lulu My Cuddlin' Kitty for $38. Savings: 24%
- Popular board games like Yatzee, Candyland and Chutes and Ladders for $5. Savings: 37%
Walmart.com is also offering free shipping with its "Site to Store" option on many items like bikes, scooters and ride-ons. More savings will be included in Wal-Mart's Christmas Toy Guide, scheduled to arrive in the mail sometime next week.

Yes, you're right but its cheaper than you can buy it from Target. No matter where you shop you buy cheap China junk. Its not where it made because thats not our choice anymore its the price and in today's economy price is right! I don't like it either.

Patricia, you are so right on that one! Still, I'm curious to know if the online store is any cheaper than going to one. Are Walmart store prices less expensive then those the pricing we get online..does anyone know? I know that my daughter wants the Barbie Glamour camper and after just purchasing the Walmart Swingset on sale for $99 (a great price), I am finding the cheapest price for this camper is about $69 plus tax. It's awfully expensive for a mom to have to purchase one item at that price. The article was so dead on the money when it read that the holiday shopping is 9 times out of 10 on the mom's to do list. I get no help monitarily speaking or otherwise with holiday shopping and have been on ebay and all the stores looking for something less expensive.
Thanks for posting your suggestion.. I'm glad someone did.

Year ago buried my mother in law. No insurance except a 500.00 policy. Funeral was 8000.00. I'd order from Walmart. All we have to do now is find some illegals to dig the grave.

Beware! You have to know your prices, before you shop at Wal-Mart. I compared prices on everyday things like Men underwear, Tinkerbell 's new movie and Dog Food for examples. Underwear was priced $1 higher than Target. Tinkerbell Movie was $4 higher than Target and Best Buy which gave the kids a great book on the fairy lives in Pixiehollow. Dog Food was the same price for a smaller bag than I purchased at Petco and Tractor Supply. They are stealing your money and your way of life by hiring Mainly Spanish employees and marketing better buys. NOT! Guess how much the gov. is paying them with food stamps and wick handouts. Don't forget all the china products!

#8, you must live in a super small town... the reason I say that is any "decent" size town that has both wal-mart, target, and others (kmart in some areas), target is by far more expensive on EVERYTHING. Every once in a great while you can get a good sale or clearance item cheaper at target, but not very often. That is why more and more target stores are closing or consolidating.

oh my ms. hoity toity.. are you better than thou? You are pathetic and sad. It's nice to know that you are on such a level that you cannot relate to the person needing to find bargains. It must really be nice to have money as no object attitude. Hey, maybe you're one of those control freaks, too. Oh, but you probably wear pants in the family anyway, huh. Excuse me.. you know something.. you can be as pompus as you show yourself here but your life could change in an instant. Think about what you say.. if you cannot comprehend how you come off, let me spell it out for you.. You're a jerk. and a snot.

Shopping in Walmart is one of the surest ways to ruin the American economy. You send American dollars to China. So you say it's the cheapest? No, not if that dollar doesn't come back, then it's really more expensive. Don't want to spend more? Check out the local thrift store, the same game is a dime on the dollar. That's budgeting. Gotta have the best, newest? Then be willing to buy it made in USA or don't buy it at all. Guess what you'll never miss that other JUNK.

I'm glad they think they're doing us mom's a favor, but they've lost most of my Christmas spending money because of their removal of layaway. Laura Phillips, if you're reading, a $100 toy lowered 40% is still a $60 toy. Most of us mom's can't spare that much money for a TOY. Also, you need to reexamine your research and surveys (most likely manipulated to achieve a desired outcome anyway) and realize that very few of your $10 toys or rollbacks are on the "Hot toy" lists of 2009. Even though KMart's selection is minimal and generally higher priced I still only have to pay a little at a time. That's how I got my kids their WII's, video games, and other high end toys. Sorry, Walmart, you're just out of touch with TODAY'S consumer.

My big question for WalMart is about Zhu Zhu Pets.......All the hype and I have shopped at a ton of WalMarts between Ohio and Virginia (on vacation spending time looking for ZhuZhu Pets
at WalMart! instead of enjoying the mountain scenery) and every store told me the SAME thing. Be here early a.m. on such and such a day and a new shipment will have arrived yet...........
go to the store at opening time only to be told "we sold out." How could that happen? Just a ploy to get well meaning grandma's inside the store. I for one am shopping somewhere else UNTIL they advertise and have in stock Zhu Zhu Pets for the $8.99 price tag they started with!!!!!!!! Love LayAway, too.
