Target return policy changes and it needs to be more upfront about it
Filed under: Shopping, Economizer
Last month, Target ushered in the busy shopping season with changes in its return policy. The timing couldn't make more sense considering the premonition and speculation about a disastrous holiday season for retailers. We all know the big discounter can't better rival Walmart on prices, but can it take a shot at them with the new policy and swing away traffic? Maybe not, according to ConsumerReports.org
On the face of it, the changes, which are still being rolled out, look awesome. In a year-long period, you can exchange any item or items up to $70 and many times as you want, as compared to the previous cap of $35 and only two returns without receipts.
The changes also allow for using a gift registry as a receipt. If you've reached your $70 limit, Target will still let you have an even exchange without a receipt. Walmart, on the other hand, allows the exchange of three items without receipts in a 45-day cycle.
So, which is a better deal? Well, Walmart wins on clarity and a cleaner policy. The company clearly spells out the details of a receipt-less return on its Web site, unlike Target which says it "allows a limited amount of no receipt refunds or exchanges for guests that don't have a receipt."
When asked why the company hasn't updated the policy changes on its Web site, Sonja Pothen, a Target spokeswoman, said it's because the company focuses on encouraging shoppers to always bring receipts for returns and exchanges.
Really, does anyone have the time to dig for the hidden changes? Target will have to do better than that.
Meanwhile, I think I'll just continue with my tried and tested habit of stashing those receipts in a secret compartment in my wallet.

Okay I do not know about you, but our Wal-Mart will NOT do a return at all or and exchange without a receipt. This is in West Chester.

That's not WalMart's policy or the way they are supposed to do business. That's very unusual.

same here in Michigan. NO RECEIPT - NO REFUND. And - if you purchase something that is even ONE day past the specified return date policy - YOU'RE STUCK WITH IT. SO - buy the item, check it out thoroughly, and if it doesn't work within the first ONE day - take it back.

Yeah, that's very strange. Their policy is anything is returnable for a gift card without a reciept UNLESS of course, it's electronics. Which you can usually talk your way into exchanges.

My experience with returns at Walmart, even with a receipt, has now driven me to say "I won't ever buy anything I think I might have to return at Walmart again". On the other hand, I've never been treated poorly when returning an item at Target. It's not always where you buy an item, it's how you're respected as a client when there's a problem...Walmart's return attitude can be less than kind to the customer here in Clermont, FL.

I've found a way around the no receipt problem at Walmart. Simply ask for store credit. They've never said no to it.

I have never had an issue at Walmart. I was a loyal target shopper for years and years, but once they changed their return policy I left, I just could not stand the poor treatment when it came to returns. You have to be flexable in this competitive market with all the other stores ready to take your business.

Call 1 800 WALMART and complain. You won't get your money back without a receipt, but you will get an even exchange or a Wal-Mart gift card for the amount of the returned item.

I have found a similar situation at the 2 WalMarts in Alexandria La. and the one in Oakdale La.
I have large parties and buy condiments, things like mayo and barbcue sauce, pickles, in large containers (bulk, I suppose). If I end up not using them for the party, and they were unopened, I would return them for store credit if I didnt happen to have my receipt. I did so after the election and had no problem. This summer, after a barbecue, I tried to return the unused items and was told that Walmart no longer took food items back, not even for store credit. Consequently I have begun to shop again at the smaller stores where you can return without a hassle.

Walmart should always take items back with a receipt, within a certain time frame. the exception is opened electronics items and some other items (such as air mattresses) where the law steps in and makes the rules.
I usually do not have any problems returning something, with or without the receipt, except at one particular Wal-mart. It's my nearest Wal-mart but I will drive out of my way to go to another Wal-mart to return something. They gave me a hassle over a router that had 2 elements missing in the package, even though I had a receipt and had just purchased it the day before. The first hassle was because it was purchased at another Wal-mart, which is bs they're supposed to accept anything from ANY Wal-mart. I finally got my exchange (which is all I wanted) but I had to fight for it. Not my only unhappy experience at that Wal-mart. They've driven me to K-mart since Target is not easily accessible here.

Walmart's return policy without a receipt is as follows:
Up to 3 returns with a valid state id/license every 45 days.
I am an supervisor at Walmart and this is the policy directly from Home Office, so if your store is telling you otherwise, contact 1-800-WALMART so they (home office) can address the situation.
This is in fact the policy and if as a customer your store is not satifying your needs, please contact Home Office.

Challenge them on it, then be prepared to call AR. Though still technically that would mean you could take something off the shelf and get a "refund" for it. Some hollywood star a couple of years ago did that at target. But if the policy is returns are allowed I wouldn't stand for them ignoring it. Though this wouldn't be the first time walmart ignored a law.

My experience has been no receipt - no return. I once had an urgent need to return a defective item and the manager went to great lengths to look up my receipt on the computer system. I was a good customer, though, that didn't seem to be the consideration. I have carried in the sales brochures from the Sunday paper and they will price match the specific item I need to by, so I can save myself the running to various stores as I am in CA.

That's odd because wal-marts in NJ always return anything as long as you have ID on you. You will not get a refund without a receipt but that is understandable, why should they refund something without a receipt? To those that complain about being "one day after" the policy, too bad for you, that's the policy, shouldn't have taken so long to return it.
And about Target, I hate getting gifts from Target, they make you get an item of equal or greater value, once I got a gift that I didn't want, say it was $30, so I wanted another item from the same department and it was $28, they wouldn't let me do it, I even told them to KEEP the $2 and they still said no. Which is why I hardly go to target, because of their stupid return policy.
