Breyers labeling mistake prompts ice cream recall
Filed under: Food, Recalls, Consumer Ally
Somebody wasn't paying attention when slapping on the labels at the Breyers ice cream factory.Unilever United States Inc., Breyers' parent company, is recalling an undisclosed number of 1.5 quart tubs of "All Natural Cookies & Cream" ice cream that are carrying labels that say "All Natural Mint Chocolate Chip." The lids, however, correctly identify the ice cream inside.
What makes this a problem isn't so much that people with a hankering for mint chocolate chip ice cream end up with cookies and cream, but that the cookies contain wheat and given that it has the wrong label there's nothing to warn those with a wheat allergy.
As a result Unilever and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration are pulling the products in hopes of preventing a wheat-allergic consumer from getting sick.
Unilever spokeswoman Anita Larsen described the number of affected tubs of ice cream as "limited" and said the company does not disclose the actual number of units in a recall.
The recalled ice cream has this UPC: 077567254245 and "Best If Used By" dates of Feb. 17, Feb 18 or Feb. 19 -- suggesting the labeling boo-boo went on for three days.
Unilever said the ice cream was recalled after some consumers complained about the mislabeling and the company realized the label didn't warn of the presence of wheat.
If you have one of the affected containers of ice cream, Unilever asks that you discard it and call the company at 877-270-7402 to get a refund.

To those of you who are making fun and wise cracks, you can do it all you want, but to someone who has a severe food allergy it's not funny.
I would think a person would notice the difference in the labels, along with the ice cream itself (isn't Mint Chocolate Chip green with dark specks of chocolate, and Cookies and Cream white with dark chunks of cookies?). Having a diabetic in the family has me reading all the labels, not just one or two.

I am sick to death of people looking for ANY excuse to try and get over on ANYBODY thereby forcing everybody else (big and small business alike) to constantly be on the defensive. People need to get a freaking life and stop expecting something for nothing. Mistakes happen....5 year olds that do not know any better are not buying the products that were mistakenly labeled. Add a bit of common sense, sprinkle with courtesy, take the crap back to the store and move on. Some freakin wanker will start a lawsuit swearing that they didnt know the difference between MINT CHOCOLATE CHIP and wheat and shoot for millions thereby increasing the cost of my regular chocolate and for this I hope they poop and fall back in it. The whole freaking world needs to RELAX AND ENJOY LIFE!!

I don't know what all the hubbub is all about from the posters side and the company's side. Wheat allergies can be dangerous so all Breyers wants to do is prevent getting sued. With that being said, if any idiot accidentally ate cookies and cream thinking it was mint chocolate chip, they're retarded. The company should just resell it for a lower price.

They do it because of the wheat allergy. A friend of mines husband is allergic to wheat. One bite and his throat will close up and they have to rush him to the E.R. It may not seem "serious" to people who don't have allergies but it is very serious for people that do. Be thankful this has never happened to you.

All ice cream is too expensive. I still like Breyer ice cream. I have enough smarts to buy it when it is on sale, buy one and get one free, or buy it from Walmart where it is usually less than $3.00. If some child had gotten the ice cream and took a spoon full and got sick, you would be singing a different tune. They did the right thing, recalled the product.

Back in the good old days, people with wheat allergies were considered to be unfit and weak, and usually starved to death by their fifth birthdays. These days the weak are allowed to pollute the gene pool with their inferior genes.
