Recall of Blair clothing nearly doubles after reports of three more deaths
Filed under: Recalls, Consumer Ally
Chenille bathrobes sold by the catalog retailer Blair are being blamed in the fire deaths of nine women, prompting the company to nearly double the number of items being recalled and expand it to all sorts of chenille clothing, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said. Most of the victims were cooking when their robes ignited. One was tending to a pellet stove. Nearly all the victims were women in their 70s and 80s. All the deaths were prior to the initial recall in April.
This is the second expansion of the recall of Blair robes, as the death toll has mounted. Added to the recall are 138,000 more chenille robes, jackets and tops. All of the recalled clothing was manufactured by A-One Textile and Towel of Pakistan, the CPSC said.
The additional items being recalled were sold by Blair between 2000 and 2007. A full list is available here.
Many of the products do not meet federal flammability standards, the CPSC said. Owners of the products are urged to stop wearing the recalled clothing immediately. Consumers can get either a full refund or a $50 gift card from Blair.
For more information, consumers can call Blair at (877) 392-7095 Monday through Saturday between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. Eastern Times, visit www.blair.com/recall, or e-mail blairproductrecall@blair.com.

And we are surprised that an item imported from Asia is not as well regulated as it would be if it were made in the USA???
Our dearly beloved government allowed all the textile jobs to go offshore and most of the manufacturing jobs to go too. now the Quality is crap, the products are dangerous and wages are so depressed we can't afford anything better. Thank you Uncle Sam, you filthy corporate pimp.

These lawsuits are frivolous. How stupid can someone be not to take precautions when cooking over a fire!? I bet if you dig a little deeper here, you'll find a Democrat ambulance chaser trial lawyer representing some Northeastern hag Liberal Democrat.

Let's not blame the government for allowing businesses to go overseas. It was those corporations that fought for expanding the "free market". They could choose to do business here. They choose not to. They could choose to keep those jobs here. They choose not to.
The answer is to use your money wisely. Don't buy at any stores that don't sell products that are made in America. And be sure to get up and leave any restuarant that is employing illegals!

Actually John, don't blame Uncle Sam for textile jobs or any jobs being shipped overseas. Blame the labor unions. They have been bilking companies out of billions for over a century now with their "organized employment demands" They will ultimately be the "fail" of the auto industry as well.

It isn't Uncle Sam that is the problem. It is the Americans. If we refused to buy the garbage that is made in China or Taiwan or Malaysia or Pakistan and only purchased American made product, then we wouldn't have this problem. Companies don't make money on product that is not being purchased.

I agree with you that the quality of American Made products is second to none John, Trouble is our Labor Unions have successfully negotiated wages up to the point where we can no longer compete price wise at the point of purchase for many if not most (I won't yet say all) given items. Example, If you have 10 employees cranking out 1000 bathrobes a week and they make 15 dollars an hour each plus they get health insurance and dental care, and 15 minute coffee breaks every 2 hours 2 weeks paid vacation every year You gotta figure the company has 6 grand a week in payroll, another 1500 in health insurance premiums needs to keep the lights on but that bills about to go up too because we need to tax coal burning power plants, The stuff all needs to be packaged and shipped, by the time its all saiud done and on the shelf at the K Mart you gotta price the item at 49 dollars to cover the transport and those new taxes diesel brings you EVERYTHING, Or we can buy the item for 49 dollars a gross (144ea) from A1Towelhead Towels in Pakistan. And have this kinda crap happen

No Disrespect to the Women involved....but with sleeves that are not form fit & bulky....why were they wearing them while around fire? Fire is very dangerous no matter what you are wearing, but with bulky sleeves....the chances of them catching on fire while working around fire is moreso than if the sleeves where tight to the wrist.

I have one of these chenille robes from Blairs and have been notified three times to return it for a refund. I am not going to return it because:
1. I love the warmth and comfort I get when I wear it in cold weather.
2. I do not and will not wear it while cooking or while standing near a heater or anything with flames or heat producing products.
p.s. I also don't order hot coffee from McDonalds and lug it around between my thighs as per the infamous Stella.

Why do people cook on the stove when they have a bathrobe with sleeves on?

One need not be cooking, on a stove or elsewhere, for these things to catch fire. A mere spark from almost anywhere can cause them to go up in flames rapidly - it happened to me.

Oh, great. So now people who don't wear fuzzy clothes when cooking and don't have pellet stoves to tend won't be able to wear what they're comfortable in because Big Brother will make manufacturers use "fame resistant" synthetics in place of natural cottons. Just another case of the growing stupidity of America from adjusting things for the dumbest common denominator.

Made in Pakistan? If I recall, it was a country such as that ( Muslim ) I have read about where it is not uncommon for a husband who wants to divorce his wife --to merely set her robe on fire and 'blame' it on the cooking oil she was standing over. The judges look the other way in these murder instances, all the men do it when they wish to take on another wife....burn the first one and they always blame it on the robe catching on fire... look it up. We should not even be doing TRADE with these countries...!

Why would they need to do that? Muslim men are allowed to have up to 4 wives. It's not necessary for them to murder their first wives to take another as you suggest. They can just marry the second one.

Seriously? I study law and if you thing the McDonalds hot coffee case was frivolous than you obviously have not read the case fully. Anyway, I don not feel like it is my job to educate you. The information is out there.
And it is not "Big Brotherish" for the government to make regulations on all fabrics whether it be tents for camping or robes for the house to make sure they are not fire hazards. These robes could have easily been manufactured to pass regulations without altering the integrity of the garment. The point was that because it was manufactured where it was this was not done.

First off "most of the victims were in their 70s or 80s". Why are these women still cooking? Has senility set in yet? Secondly, if you do choose to cook in your bathrobe, wouldn't you make sure you push your sleeves back for safety reasons? Personally, I don't cook breakfast, that's why they make cereal and toasters for. Doesn't common sense have to be in play in whatever you do? GIVE ME A BREAK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You must be under 25 to have no empathy what-so-ever for those over 70. You are an absolute idiot and the perfect example why Americans are hated worldwide. :-\
