Kohl's opens new stores and California gets big deals
Filed under: Shopping
This is welcome news in today's environment. Even powerhouse retailers like Target scaled back expansion while smaller chains and independent shops have disappeared entirely. And for Californians, it's even more so: 30 of these new stores are former Mervyn's locations there, alleviating the burden on communities facing empty big box stores and the accompanying loss in tax revenue. In all, Kohl's has re-opened 35 locations under its own banner.
Californians also get the benefit of grand opening celebrations at all Kohl's stores in that state. According to Kohl's spokeswoman Jen Johnson, since a majority of the new stores are located in California, the company decided to treat the entire state to grand opening deals. And the introduction of LC Lauren Conrad collection, a line designed by the star of MTV's The Hills reality series. Dubbed "California Chic," the collection is only available at 300 Kohl's stores in California and neighboring states and at kohls.com.

I have always been very afraid of aging, you know, becoming old and useless and unattractive. When I turned 50, I decided to do something about it. I've spent fortunes on face creams and anti-aging serums… but using GenFX is the first time I've tried turning back the clock from the inside out. It's also the last time I'll spend a fortune on face creams! Now everyone says I look 35!

Exactly what is your problem ... at 83 years of age I am far from helpless ... have never used the creams and other things to enhance my appearance ... still working part time in customer service ... and every so often have to show my drivers license to prove my age ..... FYI ... a positive attitude goes a long way how people see you ...

KOHL'S IS A JOKE AND WILL FAIL MISERABLY IN CA. ALL OF THEIR CRAP IS WAY OVERPRICED 2 BEGIN WITH SO CUSTOMERS ARE NOT REALLY GETTING A DISCOUNT. I LOVE HOW THEY PAY MINIMUM WAGE AND CLAIM THEY HAVE "HIGH PAYING POSITIONS." $8/HOUR IS NOT HIGH PAY, IT IS THE LOWEST LEGAL AMOUNT U CAN PAY IN CA. ARE THESE GUYS IN BUSINESS WITH KATHIE LEE GIFFORD ??? IF U CAN'T AFFORD TO PAY PEOPLE FAIR $$$ AND USEFUL BENEFITS, DON'T BE IN BUSINESS IN THE FIRST PLACE

Retail jobs are not designed to be CAREER jobs. They are entry-level or starter jobs - mainly for students or people that want to work part-time. Go back to school - get a good degree and move up in the world -- don't expect the retail stores to support you and your family the rest of your lives!! Take some personal responsibility!

congrat.. for Kohl's opening the new California stores. I would like for them to set aside a part of their stores for American made products. With Thanksgiving and Christmas coming up it would be a great boost for the shopping public to know that they are helping their own countrymen during this season. Wal-Mart started out that way but just as soon as the old man died, that NY corp. greed has desimated the American Work place and work force. Shop American....Buy American this holiday season. I love you all, lets Keep America in our Hearts BY.

You are going to love Kohl's! Don't buy ANYTHING at regular price because they are ALWAYS having some kind of a sale. Their own brand of menswear, Sonoma, is just as good as the "brand name" clothing, I'm talking about the regular name brand clothing that regular normal people wear, not what you would find on Rodeo Drive or in Paris Hilton's closet! They have been in CT for quite a while now and are always busy. Go check it out. You'll be glad they came to the West Coast!

If you do buy something at Kohl's for full price save the receipt because if it goes on sale in the next month - and chances are good that it will - you can get a refund for the difference.

Kohl's is an OK place to shop. Everything is always on sale...and they'll refund the difference if you don't buy it on sale.

Kohls HAS to open new stores. Their web business has suffered considerably since they discontinued free shipping for their "MVC" most valuable customers.

Yep, the joke here in Tennessee at Kohl's is "If its not at least 50% off, don't buy it, thats the limit, it has to be at least half off on sale to be even close to what it notrmally should be. Their reg everyday prices are way high for the quality of the stuff they sell. American made? Sorry, no, none of it, or very little of it. Around here, you do the department store thing. You wait for the half price sale, then you get an extra 10% to 15% off power hours and then you use your Kohl's bucks on top of that. Thats how you get the cheap Chinese made summer mens shorts at $3.99, reg. $39.99. I go to Kohl's at the end of summer sale, or lowest price of the season sale, whatever, and get shorts for $4.00, shirts for $7.00, etc. NEVER go to Kohl's when they are not having a sale, thats how you end up paying waaaaaaaaaaay to much for an item. Notice that cheap cotton t-shirts at regular price are $38!, but, half price, $19, close. Take another 15% off, $16, etc. Thats how you work the prices at Kohl's Also, notice, the new norm for discounts at Kohl's is 50%, 55%, 60%, 65% off now, no 20%-40% anymore. So, you just wait for the deepest discounts. I bought 2-8"x10" framed pictures there, 1/2" molding for my bathroom, reg. $39.99 ea, sale $3.99ea! what the frig is up with that! So, was I supposed to pay reg $80 for 2 pieces of cheap Chinese framed art? They were barely woth $4 ea. Bottom line, Kohl's.....reg prices jacked way up to be way marked down.

Herb Kohl is probably the richest senator (D-WI). He also owns the Milwaukee Bucks NBA franchise. That way he reduces his income tax.
I live 80 miles north of his headquarters in suburban Milwaukee and we don't even have a Kohl's, grocery and/or department store. Of course, we don't have a Red Lobster, Outback, Chili's and we're finally getting an Olive Garden. You see, we're a 'blue collar' town. The city up the road (Appleton, where Greta Van S was born) is sophisticated so they get all the hot chains.
That's why Kohl's is smart to open stores in California. It's Chic; Kohl's isn't Rodeo Drive retail, but I think Californians will shop there. Smart move.

Don't be scammed by Kohl's. Read the fine print for how they determine the price of an item:
The "Regular" or "Original" price of an item is the former or future offered price for the item or a comparable item by Kohl's or another retailer. Actual sales may not have been made at the "Regular" or "Original" prices, and intermediate markdowns may have been taken.
So basically Kohl's can just make up any original price to trick you into thinking you are saving a ton of money with their "sale" price. Don't buy anything unless it is 70-80% clearance or if you have a 30% coupon.

Jocko: Did you know that acting is the USA's lowest paid profession? For every Tom Cruise, there are hundreds of Tom Fools.
I know Herb Kohl. The pay is low but you can get free tickets to Laker games because Herbie owns the Milwaukee Bucks. He spends more time at Buck games than on the senate floor. That's why you never see him on TV.

ReginaFelangi: I'll have to talk to Herb, although he doesn't run Kohl's - just owns it and the Milwaukee Bucks NBA team.
The Bucks are a nice write-off. He declares its' value at $50 million although the NBA says they're worth $279 million. Even the Rams are worth $50 million; I'd buy them if I were Rush Limbaugh, who is considering it.

Congratulations to Kohls and to California. What the article didn't mention, though, was what concessions CA made in the form of property- and payroll-tax reductions, environmental waivers, etc. Imagine that, tax reductions to stimulate investment...where have I heard that idea expressed before?

To gamay9,
Herb Kohl hasn't owner Kohl's (the food stores or the dept. stores) since he sold them in the early 70's to BATUS (the old British American Tobacco Co - US Division). At that time there were about 100 plus Food Stores in Wisconsin & Illinois and 8 to 10 Dept, Stores in Milwaukee & Waukesha area. BATUS which also owned Gimbels Midwest, was trying to diversify. But by the mid 80's they weren't doing that well, they were down to 90+ Food Stores in Wisconsin only and had 10 or 12 Dept. Stores still only in the Milwaukee & Waukesha area. At that time BATUS sold the Food Stores to A&P (which A&P closed in the late 90's) and sold Gimbels Midwest to Marshall Fields (which converted most of them to Marshall Fields and closed the rest and then a year later closed all but one converted store in Madison and left the orginal Milwaukee Marshall Fields open. As for the Dept. Stores the management bought it from BATUS and started a major exspansion
