Walmart's 10 for $10: Like a dollar menu for toys
Filed under: Bargains, Kids and Money, Shopping
Anyone longing for simpler times when toys were handmade or came without a lot of bells and whistles (and the accompanying high price tag) can rejoice. Retailers are promising big selections of toys priced within reach. Walmart plans to offer 100 such items, all for $10, according to the LA Times. Walmart says it's been hard at work all year, getting suppliers to meet this price on popular toys like Barbies and action figures. It's a real win for toy-buying consumers, but for competitors, it presents another obstacle to survival.
Last year, Walmart featured 10 toys for $10. KB Toys took this as a challenge and slashed prices at its own stores. KB Toys didn't even make it to Christmas. It filed for bankruptcy and abruptly closed all stores on December 12, 2008.
This year, Toys R Us is in Walmart's sights. That retailer has already opened additional toy departments inside Babies R Us stores and stand-alone locations in malls. The Toys R Us hot toy list prominently features inexpensive items, and its in much stronger position to weather this storm.
But it's not even October. Imagine how intense this price war might get. Not a very playful thought.

See the related story on Target selling recalled toys made in China. Take a close look at where those cheap Wal-mart toys are coming from.

That is a sad headline..."WalMart hard at work" to provide the 10 for 10 deal...don't they mean the kids in China are hard at work to make more profit for WalMart. Have the deals at WalMart really been a benefit to the USA?

While it is helpful to have some frugal options as far as toys for the holdiays.. I wouldn't buy junk.. there are tons of things you can find that are not expensive but also worthwhile and fun. Here are some good ideas of gifts you can make yourself or buy for little money.

All you negative Walmart folks need to think about those of us that can't afford to pay more for our products. Sure they've got issues. Most everywhere and everyone does have some sort. Yes, I do check to see whereitems are made for the little ones. Do any of you holyier than thow people have an unemployed husband or wife and not have the second or even much of an income to get you through Christmas? I've always been frugal and if Walmart can help me get a couple more gifts for the children to unwrap, you can be sure I'll shop there. If you watch what you buy, and do your research, you won't be buying junk.

Its funny you mention about Wal-mart and the toys being made in China. Guess what so are the toys from Target, Toys R Us, K-Mart, pretty much anywhere. I love the hate Wal-Mart gets when the others stores do the exact same thing.
Plus atleast Wal-Mart is hiring people full time still. Target, K-Mart and all the other retail stores are only hiring part time only. Plus Wal-Marts base pay is also higher then the other surrounding areas.
