For fall, go faux

Faux leather jacketIt's hard to say goodbye to the summer shopping season. Not only are flip-flops, sundresses and tissue tanks easy to wear, they're also usually the least expensive clothes you'll buy all year.

The onset of fall -- and the start of at least six months of dropping temperatures -- means it's time to put away the flimsy, floaty pieces and rotate in options built to endure wind, rain and constant wear.

It's also time to trade in cotton and silk for sturdier materials -- and when it comes to outerwear options, leather and fur are two luxurious ways to make the transition. Fortunately for animal-friendly and budget-conscious shoppers, retailers are showing more faux (read: fake, and way cheaper) leather, fur and exotic skin apparel and accessories than ever. Below, your best bets for staying financially on-track -- and in PETA's good graces.

AMERICAN APPAREL FAUX LEATHER JACKET
The store's unisex jacket is the ultimate in layering ease -- short and soft, it can be thrown over any outfit, casual or dressy.

OLD NAVY FAUX FUR-LINED HOODIES
These zip-ups are as cuddly as they come -- and their thick lining will keep you warmer than the average sweatshirt.

SIMPLY VERA FAUX CROC TOTE
This durable bag from Vera Wang's Kohl's collection has all the glamor of the real thing -- and it's only $69.

FOREVER 21'S FALL FOR FAUX COLLECTION
The fast-fashion retailer boasts the biggest and best range of faux options for fall. Where else can you score a leather tulip skirt, studded leather jacket and downy fur vest for less than 100 bucks?
