Report says all eye creams are created equal regardless of price

As a 50-something female, I'll admit to having been lured by the siren call of wrinkle creams for years. Apparently, I'm not alone in wanting the claim of "brighter, younger-looking eyes" to be true. Americans spend more than $1 billion a year on wrinkle removers.
Anyhow, I was interested in the findings of tests conducted by Consumer Reports magazine about the effectiveness of 16 different over-the-counter eye creams. Ten of these creams are sold in the U.S. and six are European products, bought online and range in price from $20 to $95.
The participants in the study included 94 women and 13 men who were each asked to use two creams, one on each side of the face around the eyes, morning and night for six weeks and fill out questionnaires. The package labels were covered.
High-resolution digital photographs of each person's eye area were taken before the test, one hour after the first application and again after the six weeks of use were completed. Then trained sensory testers evaluated the before and after shots without knowing what wrinkle creams had been used.
Results varied. I was surprised to learn that a moisturizer with no anti-wrinkle claims that was used as a control, reduced wrinkles about as well as several high-rated creams did.
The tests showed that several of these wrinkle creams are worth trying. I was particularly pleased that a couple of my favorite brands, L'Oreal and Olay, made the grade. Still as anyone fighting the battle against saggy skin will attest, no product, however effective, is going to make you look like you're 19 again.
What were the rest of the brands tried, you ask? You have to subscribe to Consumer Reports online or buy the October 2009 issue to find out. I got a copy of the magazine and here's the list of the "slightly more effective" products, the ones that were found to smooth wrinkles somewhat better than the rest. The operative word here is "slightly."
L'Oreal Paris Dermo-Expertise Revitalift Double Lifting Eye, $41.34
Nivea Visage Anti-Rides Q10 Plus, $33.84
Dr. Brandt Lineless, $60
Olay Total Effects 7-in-1 Anti-Aging Booster Eye Transforming Cream, $20
The list of "average performance" products include Clinique Repairwear Intensive, Garnier Nutritioniste Ultra-Lift, Avon Anew Rejuvenate and Clarins, among others. They ranged in price from $20 to the most expensive of the eye creams, Perricone MD, which costs $95 and testers reported that it smelled like a gym bag. Yuck!
There were only two eye creams in the "slightly less effective" list, ROC Retin-Ox Intensive Anti-Wrinkle Cream, costing $47.79 and Lancome High Resolution Eye Collaser-5x Intense Collagen Anti-Wrinkle Eye Serum for $59 a pop.
Overall, wrinkle-reduction was subtle, even among the best performing products and none of the creams even came close to completely eliminating wrinkles. Each product reduced wrinkle length or depth for at least some of the testers and did nothing for others. In other words, they're all pretty much the same. You have to find the one that works best for you so try the cheaper ones first. Chances are they'll do the job just as well as any of the high-priced potions.
The Consumer Reports article goes on to suggest some sure ways to help prevent wrinkles in the first place. Youngsters take note: Wear sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses when outdoors; never use a tanning bed and don't smoke.

Good article. I've always wondered about any difference between wrinkle products and this answered my questions.
Get what's on sale! ha!

Sorry, but this is more junk science. A 6 week study? That's plain ridiculous. Cellular renewal on the face takes 3-5 months, so any 6 week study will only show the hydration properies of a product and NOT the restorative properties of any treatment cream.
Good products are expensive because of the years of research that goes into them, and the very high quality ingredients they have. Anybody who thinks petroleum jelly will work the same as a quality treatment cream are living in a dream world.
I worked in research for one of the best treatment lines in the world when I was just out of college. What I learned there changed the way I think about treatment lines forever. Some of the lines are expensive because they use expensive ingredients--but YOU have to do your homework. Any good treatment line does not rely on artificial ingredients and inexpensive products like animial fats to work.
This is my advice--if you have any money at all, spend it on your face. That's where it will do the most good and show the best results. Buy your expensive creams from a company that is ONLY in the skin treatment business, not a cosmetic line that decided to cash in on profits by making moisturizers. Do your homework--find out why these companies can exist with only a skin treatment line, and what exactly goes into their products that justify the high cost. If your skincare regime is made by a marketing or direct-sale company, throw it out. Buy the best products you can buy and use them sparingly so that they last at least a few months. The results will be worth it.

I am a Dr. Brandt product girl all the way. LOVE LOVE LOVE I have tried at least one product from pretty much every brand there is that is relatively known. The lowest marks from me goes to Philosophy's hope in a jar, although I give them high marks for their cleansers, and the Kinerase products that just made my skin hurt and made it so dry, even the lady shaping my eyebrows mentioned the condition of my skin at that time.

I would stick to Sheishedo. It is the best, when it comes to skin care.
Trust me I know. I bought over the counter skin care and did not find anything better. That was a waste of money and time!!!
Sheishedo, Sheishedo, they should pay me for this!

You are right, Sue. Shiseido started making skin care products in the 1890's. They are the best.

Until I was in my early 60s I used regular dial bar soap and baby lotion on my face. I am now close to 70 and my face has few wrinkles and my eye area has no wrinkles or lines. Finally I have changed to using a name brand product in hopes of keeping a young face.

Ahhh, but they didn't add BeautiControl's eye products to the test. That's where you'll see a visible difference in minimizing fine lines, wrinkles and tightening for the best prices. Check www.beautipage.com/alinefrasca

I gave the Strivectin anti-wrinkle product line the full 6 months test and it was a huge disappointment. Not only does the product cost ten times more than other products, it actually caused discoloration of a minor scar I had on my forehead. It bleached the scar white so that it became more visible than it ever was. There is a similar product from CVS called Preventin-AT that works really well for reducing and flattening forehead wrinkles. That one is great. I also swear by Olay moisturizer. It is inexpensive. I've been using it since 1980. I'm 52, male, and people think I look like I'm in my early 30s. I used to get carded well into my 30s simply by using Olay every day around my eyes and face right after my morning shower and sometimes before bed. I swear Olay is the best deal around. Preventin-ATis a little more expensive, but I use that only specifically to target forehead wrinkles because it actually works best solely for that purpose. I have tried ALL of the most expensive ones. The majority are a really bad value for the price compared to the cheaper ones that actually work as well and often times with less grease and perfumes that can be irritating.

Thanks for sharing that. As a 50-something, I, too, was wondering what eye cream to go for. I will stick with my Olay. I notice it leaves a slightly golden sheen on my fingers when I apply it thus helping the dark circles some as well.

No freaking way. I'm sorry...thats just not true. You did a silly one time test and slap it on the internet because everyone wants to save money.
Not all lines are created equal by any means. But the reasons some department store lines cost more is because the work put behind them and the technology is far greater then a drug stores.
How did they end up being priced that way? Its what they use in it.
But don't take my word for it ladies.... its your face an you can do what you want with it.
Clothing and shoes go in and out of fashion. Good skin... always in fashion.
PS- if your 50 and just starting the eye cream. Its too late, you have prevent the damage done to skin. You can improve texture but don't look for it take 20 years off. Any product that claims that is bogus.

Hey, I'm 52 and have been using various products for over 30 years religiously. I have tried everything from Estee Lauder to Strivectin, to Collagen 5, and every other brand and gimmick on the market including Avon (which has some really good stuff.) First off, I KNOW from experience that what was said in this article is spot-on correct. Secondly, it is ridiculous to say it is too late after 50. That has got to be the dumbest thing I've heard in a long time. It's like saying it's too late to quit smoking. You CAN reverse aging damage to the skin using proper care at ANY AGE. As far as lab tests, etc., I found that one of the fancy ingredients in Strivectin is actually used in wood repair products! They are ALL tested in labs because it is required. And, they could all use the scientific names for any of their ingredients to make them sound more serious, but the bottom line is the skin needs hydration and most moisturizers accomplish that regarless of hyped up test results. Anything will show improvement under the microscope. It's how it works in the real world that matters. It's never too early and its never too late to moisturize and it doesn't have to cost a fortune. It is all marketing to dummies. "A fool and his money are soon parted," as they say.

I love Ice Elements and my skin looks great according to DH and family/friends.
It's a simple product that really works. I use day/night routine and it's the best I've found and I've tried them ALL!!!
I buy directly from site...serums, eye creams and moisturizers.
When traveling once, I forgot eye cream and bought one at spa. I REALLY noticed a difference...all the little "crepey" lines showed up on my upper lids. It's the first thing I pack now :)

I do not know how the new proactive products will work, but I know that when my son used the acne products, they worked extremely well. Maybe something cheaper would work as well on some people as well, but did not for him. Not everyone's skin is going to react the same way. I have loved Avon product's, Olay, and L'oreal. I am 58 and last week someone guessed my age at 42!! People that guess are usually closer than that, but always think I am younger. ONe of the best things to do is sun-protection. I did not get that as a youth and got many sunburns, and I am fair -hair and skin. It is Never too late

I just use a bit of vaseline around my eyes (be careful not to get too close to your eye) and I wake up to soft skin and feels better than all the stuff I used previously that cost BIG BUCKS$$$$!!!! Always use sunscreen, at least #30 for daily use, #50 for at the beach, don't smoke and think happy thoughts...it's all reflected on your skin!!

Years ago Dateline did a story on wrinkle creams just like this one, they had a certain number of participants whom they gave high end creams, and a certain number they gave just regular body cream. End results were that the high end really didn't do much if at all. However they were very surprised to find that Lubriderm over all body lotion was the clear winner which did more for everyone than any of the other creams that were made specifically for wrinkles! Since that show I stopped looking for those miracle creams because all they do is take your money. My Mom pounded in our heads like I do my kids, moisturize, moisturize, moisturize your skin daily. Especially your face and always use sunscreen. I am 46 and I still to this day can't by beer without getting carded so it must be working. Oh and no I don't use the Lubriderm, I by the knock off Wal-Mart carries.

I've tried almost every eye cream there is from BeautiControl to Arbonne and everything in between. After awhile I find I'm allergic to them all, with a skin rash below my eyes after a few weeks. The BEST of all is regular Ponds Cold Cream. I'm not allergic to it, and it does a fantastic job.
