PETA's 'whale' billboard has the InterTwitter Fraternal Council mad
[Sound of gavel tapping] I hereby call this meeting of the InterTwitter Fraternal Council to order!Brothers and Sisters, we have come to call your attention to the latest marketing campaign by the most irreverent fraternal organization on our campus of environmental activism. I know, we all agreed that the whole Alicia Silverstone 'oh my skin is so beautiful because of eating vegetables' campaign was, while a little bit of a stretch, hot. And Eva Mendes naked to protest the sale of furs? Again, we let it go on the "hotness" exception to the flagrant marketing rule.
But today, something has come into view that really qualifies to have Rho Epsilon Tau Alpha, or in your American language, PETA, kicked off Fraternity Row for good. In a press release filled with offensive imagery that has traditionally been used to insult women around the keg of the cheapest light beer at fraternity parties, PETA has defended its decision to display billboards in Jacksonville, Florida with an image of the midsection of an overweight woman in a bikini and a slogan that has previously only been found in places such as, say, the bathroom wall at the lowest dive bar in town.
We will read the first paragraph of your press release into the record. "A new PETA billboard campaign that was just launched in Jacksonville reminds people who are struggling to lose weight -- and who want to have enough energy to chase a beach ball -- that going vegetarian can be an effective way to shed those extra pounds that keep them from looking good in a bikini. The ad shows a woman whose "blubber" is spilling over the sides of her swimsuit bottom and features the tagline "Save the Whales. Lose the Blubber: Go Vegetarian. PETA."
As if to say, "We know it's not OK to make fun of an obese woman to her face. But it's OK if it's to her back, right?"
Here is what the other members of the ITFC are saying: "totally gobsmacked." "just when you think PETA can't get any more offensive." and "this is what PETA is all about: getting attention."
Well, you've got our attention, PETA. And we are reminded why we don't like you. It's not funny to make fun of people's weight problems, and to assert you know why they're occurring is wrong-headed and judgmental and, well, just like you. And so we're suspending your charter, as of today, and we're all going to go and eat some bacon!

Just call it a conundrum. Ever see those TV shows where the girl who was ridiculed in high school is now the hottie and she wants her revenge against those who ridiculed her?
Um, why? If not for the ridiculing, maybe you'd not have changed.
i say this as someone who did not do those things, but if it inspires someone to change, then good. If it does not, THEN leave them alone, for another couple million calories or so.

To me it seems PETA is implying that overweight people are the cause of their problems. As if overweight people stopped eating meat that would solve all their problems. I feel that is the part of this campaign offensive. Why not show a pretty girl in makeup. Don't they use animal products in makeup? Why not campaign against animal abuse and not what people chose to eat. Or who chooses to eat what. I don't recall seeing whale on the last menu I looked at.

I believe there is a place on this earth for all of Gods creatures......Right next to a side of mashed potatos.... The human species did not climb to the top of the food chain just to be vegetarians. Hunting season is getting closer.

we are aggressive in our language towards people who smoke, those who use illicit drugs, those who drink excessive alcohol; but the obese are off limits. Smoking and obesity are our number 1 and 2 health problems. with obesity fast replacing smoking as the number 1 health risk. We need to stop being politically correct with the morbidly obese.

Ok first of all the girls who lose weight and turn out beautiful did not do it because someone made fun of her. She did it for herself because she was tired of being over weight. All it does for those people is give them a low selfesteem and makes them secretly hurt inside which makes them eat more. It is unfair to say that people that are fat because they want to be. No one knows what makes another person feel this way. Only the person that has the problem. And instead of making fun of them which hurts people should talk to them and make them feel welcome and not alone. Talk to them and help them feel good about themselves. Maybe if they are treated equal and not different then they will have the will to lose weight.

I was the loser until around 10th grade, then changed and ended up in a position above those that called me loser. I have 'strutted my stuff' at subsequent reunions. I disagree with you, the good that can come from my 'revenge' is that my classmates just might help their children learn not to make fun of people. And, trust me, the overweight person teased relentlessly has problems with that the rest of their life, they do not need this PETA junk.

Dear God! Are you saying that bullying and abuse and ridicule , and public shaming are the way to get people to change into what ever you want them to be? That's what leads to hostility, mental and physical stressor, and I don't know what else... I'm appalled by that attitude.

Let me make this perfectly clear...IT IS NEVER, EVER, right to make fun of a person's appearance! For your information, I was the overweight girl who turned hot and I never forgave the abusers who picked on me and made me feel less than human all for their fodder. It is quite audacious of you to think that I owe any of those clods (and there were many) a nod of thanks.
You say that you "you never did those things" but I bet you stood on the sidelines and watched as others did...you are no better!

Everyone should be left alone about their weight. Not everyone can help what is going on with their bodies and we shouldn't have anyone telling us we need to lose weight. Anyone that is over weight knows they need to lose it but for some it is not that easy.
I am not a fat person but I have medical problems that have caused some weight gain and it hurts to hear I won't date you because you are to big. I exercise all the time and it won't come off because of a pituitary gland in my head. Look into it before you make fun of someone for their size. Not all of it can be helped. There is also morbid obesity that is hereditary. Look into that too. before you make people feel bad about themselves.

Niko,
I was at an intersection once when the girl in the car with me observed a pedestrian in the crosswalk and stated they thought the person was really large.
I pointed out that that person might have been even larger six months earlier, so why judge them without knowing more about them.
To state that people should NEVER say anything is a bit extreme. If not for my father taking me to task when I went for a bowl of m&m's one evening while I was still in jr. high school, I am sure I would have never lost the weight I lost thereafter.
I have always been chunky for my height, but fortunately some of that is leg muscle that I got from long distance running, some cycling, and walking.
I would probably have been heavier my entire life without my father's tongue lashing, something he rarely did when it came to my appearance.
What about the people that do respond to such criticism, without it, they would remain in a stupor their entire life and never get the motivation they may require.
Like I said, keeping quiet or saying something out loud is the conunundrum when it comes to what we say to others about weight issues.

I know quite a few vegetarians who are a bit over weight. Some are very overweight. So eating vegetables is not the only solution.
