1.6 million Little Tikes toys as much as 15 years old recalled after choking incident
Filed under: Recalls, Consumer Ally
Little Tikes is recalling about 1.6 million toys toddlers have been playing with for the past 15 years after a boy choked on one of the small parts, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said.At issue are the plastic toy nails that are in Little Tikes workbench and truck sets.
Although the only report of a problem with the sets involved the one boy -- who has since recovered -- CPSC spokesman Scott Wolfson told WalletPop the incident led to the massive recall because of its similarity to a recall of Playskool workbenches in 2006 prompted by the deaths of two children.
"The scenario is one that is very frightening," Wolfson said.
In the two deaths and the third incident, the toy nails -- which measure about 1 inch by 3 inches, are blue or red -- got stuck in the children's throats.
Parents are asked to take the nails away from children and request a free replacement nail from Little Tikes. Wolfson said the new nail was made with a larger head determined to be safe for children.
The Little Tikes recall involves a variety of different products sold since March 1994. A full list of the products along with photos is available here.
For more information, call Little Tikes at (800) 791-2737 weekdays between 9 a.m. and 8 p.m. Eastern times or between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. Saturdays, or visit www.littletikes.com.

Hey lets just take EVERY toy off the market and live our lives in fear over how children might misuse their toys. If parents cant tell what things their child can choke on and are incapable of doing their job as a parent to either watch their kids when playing with these toys or not allow them to have it then they dont belong being a parent!

I agree. Parents need to take responsibility for parenting. Companies do everything possible without staying with the child 24/7 to watch them play. They are marked age appropriate and are parents going to sue the treasury department for making coins small where children can chock on them too. Know what your children are playing. Everyone knows children should not play with small objects!

Yes, God forbid that parents these days would actually have to take the time to pay attention to what their child is doing. Let's just recall everything we have in our homes that is small enough for a child to put into their mouths.

so after 15 years without a problem One kid who wasn't being watched when around small toys had a problem..
So now all other kids whose parents know its fine for a young one to play with such toys under supervision won't be able to enjoy such toys ..
Its so sad how now our little ones can't have the fun playground equipment at school or play games like tag which help them devolope and get exercise and the toys mentioned taught them cordination becuase of poor supervision..but yet its ok to let them play with video games listen to kids bop music and play with bratz dolls..Do we really wonder why our kids are so screwed up??

People today are so stupid. If a child chokes on something then it is unsafe for everyone. If an adult has an accident it is usually the fault of the car or the road it happened on. Do ya see where I am going with this. Look who gets to rule our country in the future. If the parents can't teach them when they are young, what is goint to happen when they grow up. Everything that happens to them will be the fault of another. Parents need to take responsibility for what their kids are doing and guide them in the right direction. Teach them right from wrong. Come on MOMS & DADS get with the program and pay more attention to your kids so that they will be more able to run our country.

Amazing, huh? Not long ago, a toddler died when he choked on a sunflower seed when his parent was out of the room. What's the solution to that tragedy? Ban/recall seeds or stay in the room with your two year old. The official motto of the United States is, according to USC ยง186: is 'In God we trust.' - we need to change it to "It's not my fault".

The cost of this recall is detrimental to this company.
That same individual could have as easily choked on a wadded up peice of paper.
For the general intelligence of those who would respond indifferently;
Why not recall Paper?.

I should have read these posts before writing my comment. Everyone here seems to agree on the same point.
Why punish society for ones' fault?.
Accountability is the posession of us all.
My Fault, My Punishment!
Their Fault, Their Punishment.
It is not a perfect world.

While I am in no way advocating for parents to stop watching their children and/or monitoring what they are playing with, toys that are improperly made or particularly dangerous should be recalled. Children's safety is far more important than some crappy toy company's profits.

Kalin, do you have children? were you born before 1970? Manufacturers do every possible testing to ensure the safety of their toys. They also put alot of warnings on the packaging they come in. It is souly the RESPONSIBILITY of the parent, daycare worker, whoever the parents put the child's welfare into, to PAY ATTENTION and play with the child when they are playing with these toys. These toys, like the tool bench, are made for bigger people to PLAY with the child and teach them HOW to use them. No no dont put that in your mouth... ucky, nasty.. Just putting your child down to play with something and then LEAVING the room or leaving it out where the child could get it UNSUPERVISED is grossly negligent. The fact stands.. .WHO WAS WATCHING THIS CHILD WHEN THEY CHOKED? WHY DID IT HAPPEN?? because the CHILD was alonnnnnnnnnnnnnnnne in the area they were playing....alone meaning NO adult supervision

You're a f******g idiot Kaylin. Are you able to tie your shoes or do you have someone do it for you? This country is gone. It's been ruined by idiots like you.
We used to play with the mercury out of broken thermometers. Eat the chipped lead paint from the woodwork or walls. And I'm still alive, still alive, still alive. Oops!
Anyway as I was saying, take care of yourself. Go ahead, ride a bike without a helmet. We did as kids. And I'm still alive, still alive, still alive. Oops, there it goes again!
I'm guessing that you have someone with you 24/7/365 to watch over you and make sure that nothing bad happens to you. At some point, it's NOT the manufacturer's fault. I've raised 3 kids, have 6 grandkids and 3 great grandkids and none of them have choked to death, run into the street (more than once that is - because that was ALWAYS followed with a butt beating). Hell I choked on an ice cube as a kid. My brother and sisters sat in the room laughing at me. They knew (I didn't) that the ice would quickly melt enough that I would cough it up or swallow it, but it scared me. So the 2nd and 3rd time it happened, I didn't panic. And I'm still alive, still alive, still alive. Oops. Although I times I think I may have sustained some sort of set back, set back, set back! Oops!!!!!

Remember Lawn Darts? We played with them and no one got hurt because Momma told us we would be in trouble if we did, and we were more worried about what she would do to us than what a dart could do. Any FOOL can breed achild very few deserve the title Momma, I was lucky to have one of the best.

I'm 67 years old. When I was a young tyke I had one of those roll up whistle toys that you blow into and it rolls out and whistles. The whistle itself was just a little metal thing that made the sound. I took a breath to blow and the whistle came out and stuck in my throat. I nearly didn't get it out. Scared my dad half to death. Maybe I should go back and sue the manufacturer.
