Recession leaves more bodies left unburied
Filed under: Recession
The recession is hitting everyone hard -- even the dead.Or at least the surviving relatives of the deceased.
Several large counties are having unprecedented increases in the number of unclaimed bodies, partly because more people can't afford to bury or cremate their loved ones, according to a Time story on Yahoo.
Local governments, which must dispose of the bodies, are picking up the tab.
"People were picking the bodies up last year," said Albert Samuels, chief investigator at the medical examiner's office in Wayne County, Mich., in the Time story. "Across the board, I'm finding the numbers are on the rise of either families who are not coming forward to claim bodies or they're signing releases saying they can't afford to bury someone, which taxes the county resources because then the county is responsible for burying these people."
The Los Angeles County coroner's office has seen the number of bodies unclaimed by families for cremation or burial increase because of economic hardship, leading to the department doing 36% more cremations in the past fiscal year -- 712 compared to 525 the previous year.
Planning a funeral is difficult, and not being able to afford to bury or cremate a family member must be especially difficult. And even for people who had a loved one buried, you're not always safe in the knowledge that they're resting in peace -- as in the case of cemetery workers digging up bodies in Alsip, Ill., so the burial plots could be resold.
Buying your own pine box to be buried in can be inexpensive at around $250, and backyard burials are becoming more popular, according to a New York Time story. Just check with your local government officials to see if burial on your property is legal. Cremation can cost a few hundred dollars.
A funeral with burial is expensive, averaging $7,323. And that doesn't include cemetery, monument or marker costs.
In Wayne County, Mich., which includes Detroit, it costs $750 to bury an unclaimed decedent in a potter's grave in Western Wayne County, Samuels said. The county will pay the cost if the state declines to help.
With the auto industry in such poor shape and Michigan hurting in the recession with some of the highest unemployment in the country at 15.2%, I wouldn't want to bet on the state being able to afford burial costs.

What about donating the body to medical schools? I heard they have a need for them, they do a respectful burial after, and the cost is nothing. I'm going to put that in my will.

My husband and I both are registered with "Genesis" ore bodies are donated to the medical school. We will be collected and after a year if the family wishes our cremated remains will be returned to them. 600 dollars are given towards memorial expenses and all certificates are issued by them. We carry a card at all times and must not be embalmed. This has taken the strain of burial away from the family since are not in the position to pay huge amounts to fatten the purses of funeral homes!

Marsha, There are many people who "will their bodies to Science" and organ donors who are rejected in the screening process. In cases of cancer, infection, organ breakdown or chemotherapy/radiation, the body is deemed unusable for donation. Many medical schools cannot afford to purchase new cadavers for clinical study due to education funding cuts. The best course of action is to plan ahead when you are young, setting aside money for health insurance, retirement, life insurance, make a will and plan for funeral expenses. How many parents do you think will save for college for their kids at the expense of their own needs later in life?

To Marsha: You might want to check on the University's guide lines with donating a body. My understanding, with having a relative donate his body several years ago when he passed, it must be transported to the proper people immediately upon death. Thus being so, there would not be time to read a will then dispose of the body. If you contact a University now to donate the body, most of them will pay you for it and do so at the time you sign the contract to donate. Tell your loved ones now that this is your wishes. Waiting to do this after the death, might create a lengthy amount of time to try to find aUuniversity that would want to accept the body. It's not like you can just call one up and they take it in at the drop of a hat. A good idea to donate one's body though in order for the medical students to be able to learn from it and in today's tough economy, a way to make a bit of extra cash now.

Me too!!! I think if I could help people learn even after I am gone, why not? It is less of a burden on my family and an asset to those who can learn from my corpse---I will put that in my will, too- thanks for reminding me--

That would be wonderful if everyone's body was eligible. Both my mother and I had it planned to do that, making it known to each other about that being our wish. She passed away a couple of years ago. Unfortunately, her wish couldn't be realized. There are things the schools consider when determining if a body is acceptable for student study...or not. So you might want to be aware of that when making plans with family.

Obama Pelosi Reid and the rest of the democrat liberal socialists have a plan for you, Government control healthcare. Here are some benefits the media won't share with you:
1) Euthenizes the elderly, grandma, grandpa, when the government decides they are not worthy of medical treatment. YOU HAVE NO CHOICE.
2) Mandates funding murder of innocent children, Government (taxpayer) funded abortions. YOUR TAX DOLLARS AT WORK.
3) Empowers atheist litigants to outlaw the healing power of the Christian faith, Removing christian symbols from government places even though the country is at least 70% christian. GOVERNMENT TELLING YOU WHAT TO DO.
4)Taxpayer Government funding of sex-change operations. Apparently this is more important than saving the lives of unborn children and elderly citizens.
This is the result of blindly electing a Hitler-esque President and a radical leftist controlled Senate, House of Representatives and now the Supreme Court. Wake up people!

How often have you been abducted by space aliens? Keep tinfoil on your head on all occasions? How incredibly stupid can you be to believe that the President and the US Congress would advocate and pass legislation intent on sending seniors to an early grave! There aren't just suckers born in our country everyday. Village idiots like you are also born everyday as well.

To many grandparents abandoned in nursing homes without visits, with the govt. (taxpayers in case you are on welfare and don't know where the $ comes from) picking up the cost, perhaps euthanasia would be preferable to being incarcerated for no crime other than becoming old and incontinent? Why not ask your elderly kinfolk if you ever visit them?

Who told you such rubbish. The only kind of people who would call Obama "Hitleresque" would have to be some left Behind Right Wing reject of his Republican betters; for you know, they all think they are your "Betters", every single one of the criminal scum. (No wonder they misapropo call you Red staters.) Take a look at Fatso far-out Limbaugh. Hear they are making a movie about Jack Abramoff and Tom DeLay; are you planning to rush to the Cattle Call when they cast "extras"?

If you are going to write such awful things on an opensite for all to see, one would think you would document your information for all to review before believing such outrageous statements. Healthcare at the moment is in a huge twist and getting tighter and is amazing what folks out there are saying will be the result of this "Reform" which should bring all citizens whatever their choice into a more affordable health care system that is in total disarray at the moment because of the greed of the Insurance companies today. Do you not believe everyone should have access to health care? Did not the institution of Social Security during the Roosevelt Administration also bring much displeasure, yet it has helped hundreds of millions that may not have been able to totally prepare for their retirement? It has worked well since inception and alive and well today! What do you have to say about that? Please temper your comments without referencing such atrocities!!

Really... "The Man"... then please explain why it was under the BUSH administration they began removing the Ten Commandments from public courts... Why was it under the BUSH administration people lost their jobs... Why was it under the BUSH administration soooo many people have no jobs, no money, no resources... If you ask me he doesn't seem right wing at all. I USED to be a Republican, when it MEANT something, when values held true, but now it means inflicting suffering, misery to all who could fall victim. I am religious, I am a conservative, but I will not stand seeing people suffer, that is not what it means to be CHRISTIAN. People who do like seeing suffering, give Christians a bad name! And those who oppose free healthcare (like so many other countries already have) are probably just SELLING insurance, and stand to lose out on profits. I was born at night, not yesterday night!!

Ok all you Liberals that are saying bad things about the Man, what the hell does the Democrat plan say exactly? Don't call this guy a lier if you can't state what the current purposal says. Hell your liberal leaders haven't even read it yet and have even stated they couldn't even understand it if they spent the time reading the thing. Ok folks if it is too hard to understand and too long to read, maybe it needs to be changed. Fact is Obama just want to make vague statements about the bill he hasn't even read yet, but just trust him it will be OK when they pass it and he signs it. That is most of what this anger is over, the congress people can't even answer people's questions about the legislation. They need to be made to believe that is their jobs and then just do it. Many people have read parts of this stupid legislation, and they don't like it. Hey ther government has screwed up Medicare, Medicad, Social Security, Freddie and Fannie. Social Security and Medicare are about to go broke and they admit it.

I must say, you are consistant. You got EVERYTHING wrong. Try doing some reading instead of listening to right wing nuts like Limbaugh, Palin, Hannity, Beck and Dobbs. These people are lying because the only way for them to get anything done is to make people very, very afraid. Before you make comments, learn some FACTS.
Also, have you ever heard of separation of church and state? If you do some reading (assuming you can read) you will see that religion has no place in government.
