The Mouse roars, and Disney jacks up ticket prices again
Filed under: Budgets, Extracurriculars, Travel
You probably never dreamed it couldn't get any more expensive, but at Walt Disney World, dreams come true. Effective Sunday, August 2, ticket prices went up again. The inflation of ticket prices is an annual summer ritual for Disney Parks, and anyone who hoped that the recession would entice the company to skip it this year has been disappointed. The one-day adult ticket for a park is now $79, up from $75. That's a leap of 5.3%.
A child's ticket (and in Disney's world, childhood prices end once you turn 10) goes from $63 to $68, or a dollar more than the full adult price just two years ago. The right to visit more than one park per day now costs $52 per vacation, as opposed to $50 before.
Disney is front-loading its biggest price hikes on its tickets for shorter stays, an effort to lure people into staying longer at the resort (and spend more money). A seven-day pass goes to $234 from $228, a rise that's more modest than in years past.
Disney announced these increases shortly after its quarterly earnings report. That revealed that the theme parks are still raking in a profit -- $521 million -- only it's just not as big as it used to be. If earnings are still in the black, the Mouse must reason, then there's no reason to change the tradition.
Part of the reason for that is aggressive discounting by the Orlando resort. Usually, that comes in the form of breaks (free entry, free meals) for people who elect to stay in Disney-owned hotels for four nights or more.

All About Disney

If you can swing that, then it's true that as long as those big deals are available, the high ticket price at the theme park gate becomes more bearable. But not everyone is willing to do that, either because they don't have that much time or they recognize that Disney's hotels are often three times the price of comparable lodging just outside the resort property. Nonetheless, there have been enough takers of the mass discounts to fill the parks but still dent the bottom line.
Steadily increasing entry prices also benefits in Disney Parks because it helps it justify charging guests up to $209 for the privilege of allowing any ticket they buy to be valid forever. Unless guests spend that extra money on a "no expiration" offer, tickets are useless after two weeks, but repeat visitors routinely spring for the option as a way of speculating against higher prices on their return trips.
Disneyland in Anaheim, California, raised its prices by $3, bringing adult tickets to $72 and kids' tickets to $62. As recently as 2001, an adult ticket was just $43.
It's hard to slam Disney for continually raising prices if there are so many people who are continually paying them. If you're a true believer in capitalism, you have to hand it to Walt's money-minded followers, even if you also have to shrug and say, "I can't afford that."
Traditionally, Universal Orlando and SeaWorld Orlando follow suit in short order. We'll see if that holds true this year, when everyone in Orlando is scrambling for business.

I live in central florida, Orlando has been and still is an outragious, overpriced, crime laden city. It cost you to take a pee and just drive on there highways. They toll you every mile or so. And, the tolls are not cheep ones either. Forget those 50 cent tolls it's more like a buck and a half to drive a mile or two on there highways. My wife and I have stayed away from Orlando for years and it's just keeps getting worse. Let the tourists pay ther high tax tourists fees for everything. Not me though!!!

Actually there is a gas station outside the Orlando airport whose price is more 3-times the price inside the city limits.
I filed a complaint with the Attoreny General and all I got was lip services. They stated can deal with this station as to prices.
Like last year (during Nov08) gas inside the city limt was $2.10 per gal for regular but this station was charging $5.35.

I agree with Fred -- Gary needs some serious English courses. How hard is it to spell and use correct pronouns?

We are headed to Disney in February courtesy of my in-laws. For years, I have refused to donate my money to Disney who I feel has made their money and now needs to lower their rates to make it more affordable for the average family. It's pretty sad you have to be a descendant of Bill Gates to be able to afford "The Happiest (and most expensive) Place on Earth". I would still love to boycott this place but if the in-laws are paying..I'll take the kids!

Likely your inlaws, knowing your distaste for Disney and unwillingness to spend money there, are merely trying to humiliate you and coerce you to compromise your beliefs. So you capitulate like a wuss, and go along like a namby-pamby, which is what yiou are.

Did it ever occur to you that you are the wuss and the in laws are just trying to do something nice for the grandkids? I don't like Disney and haven't for years. Too pricey. But my granddaughter's other grandparents take her and the other grandkids to Disney and I say.......go for it and thank you. That way we can do other fun things with her that aren't that expensive. She gets the best of both worlds.

Walt Disney World is the Best "Family" Vacation in the World. You get what you pay for! After Disney you are spoiled and other Parks are high priced and not maintained. I luv Disney World, and have for the past 30 years.

If you like paying outrageous prices to be in line for more than 30 minutes per ride, sweat your behind and pay $2.00 for a bottle of water...and believe me you will need more than that in a day, then be my guest! (not to mention the food cost)
i live in florida and have family in orlando, trust me everybody is starting to hate Orlando 'cause they take advantage of hard working people like you and me.
i do not go there anymore, waste of time...

We are a family of five with only one working parent, but we will save for years just to go to Disney! We love it! It is worth every penny. There is no other park that compares to the cleanliness, friendliness, and top-notch customer service you experience in Disney World. Their prices are more than fair for what you get. If you don't like it, then don't go.
