According to the Labor Department, the June unemployment rate for those 55 and older hit 7%--the highest on record. That's bad news for seniors who are out of work or being forced to re-enter the work force to make ends meet. The Dolans have some job hunting tips for the 55+ crowd, including good news about some advantages you may have over the younger competition.
Dear Ken and Daria:
Thanks to the investment losses I've suffered, I have to come out of retirement and go back to work. Do you have some job hunting tips for seniors?

I have a job at Target- they are senior friendly. Great benefits, like 10% off for your purchases- groceries, too! Nobody else even wanted me-I am an over qualified gray beard, I guess, when it comes to a regular job. Of course, by 2020 they will be crying for baby boomer seniors to come back into the workforce.

Another option might be to take phone calls at home. I have been doing this and there are many senior citizens doing this at home. http;//wahjobs.blogspot.com has a listing of call centers

A great option for unemployed seniors is to learn income tax preparation. Over 50% of all taxpayers use a paid tax preparer and the number is expected to grow due to the tax law changes being added this year by the Obama Administration. You can start a new career as a tax professional after completing just one 10-week Comprehensive Income Tax Course through The Income Tax School. Tax professionals can develop year-round revenue by offering additional financial and/or accounting services for their individual and small business tax preparation clients. Qualified tax preparers are in short supply; therefore employment opportunities are available, and self employment is also an option (visit websites at links below).

That is such baloney! You can get your income taxes done for free at all sorts of places nowadays, especially by AARP and some others. I worked for H&R Block, Jackson Hewitt and they both laid people off -- last year in particular -- because they lacked business. Who wants to pay to have their taxes done when you can have them done for free??
