Mission Back-to-School: Operation Homefront needs your help
Filed under: Entrepreneurship, Charity, School

Operation Homefront has kicked off its 2009 back-to-school program for military families. They've teamed up with Dollar Tree Stores to help military families get their kids ready to go back to school. The store has begun marshaling civilians to help support the families of the brave men and women in the armed forces who, when they deploy, often leave behind families struggling to make ends meet on a day-to-day basis, never mind coping with the emergencies that happen when least expected.
Dollar Tree is aiming to fill 15,000 backpacks with new school supplies for children of all ages. With 3,600 stores around the country, that goal shouldn't be hard to reach if we all pitch in.
Operation Homefront is a non-profit organization set up to provide emergency assistance and morale to our troops, to the families they leave behind and to the wounded when they return home. They have more than 4,500 volunteers in 30 chapters nationwide and have, to date, provided critical assistance to more than 45,000 military families in need. To volunteer for local distribution events or to find out how to help your military neighbors in need, contact Operation Homefront to find your local chapter.
In the meantime, your mission, should you decide to accept it, couldn't be easier. Simply buy school supply items and drop them off in a "Backpack Brigade" collection box located in the Dollar Tree store near you. Operation Homefront volunteers will then collect and distribute all donated items to military families in your area. The drive ends July 25 so let's all do our bit on the home front so that our enlisted men and women have one less thing to worry about while they're doing their bit on the battlefront.

There are thousands of charities, many of whom are honest and make good use of donations. I contribute as much as I can to those that I feel do good work. On the other hand there are many enterprises that benefit the organizers much more than the people they purport to help. It's important to get information on the financial aspects of any charity before making contributions. As to helping schools and school children, it's fine. However, people having children who do not have the ability to provide for them has gotten too prevalent and puts a big burden on the government and on charities who try to help. Too many children are born without the benefit of a father in the picture. Some from young teen mothers. Those kids have little chance of making it in the world. The schools can't provide the guidance and education that a pair of parents should provide. We;'ve put single mothers on a pesdestal and encourage them by not insisting that they do not have children if there are not two parents to care for them. Some 88% of the men in jails are from single parents who cannot parent. Therein lies a big societal problem and no one wants to address it because those who try are immediately labeled racists. Giving to those kids who don't have a chance to make it because of no parental guidance is good and well but the UNDERLYING PROBLEM needs to be addressed. We don't dare say bastards anymore or unwed mothers BUT THAT IS THE PROBLEM. We must get back to a balnced family unit to bring children into the world. Society can't correct what unthinking baby machines are doing. It is destroying any chance of a balanced society with less crime and drugs. The problem is in the rearing or absence of rearing of children.

One problem I see is when nonprofit organizations have staff/CEOs who draw huge salaries. You can check it out on charity navigator. I want my dollars donated to actually go to the chlldren instead of some huge salary for the CEO.

Thanks for your input, I am the President of an OH chapter and have worked gratis since the chapter was founded in my state. I am not alone. The entire founding team of this state is volunteer and several of the other chapters are founded as such. Eventually the all volunteer model has to be supplemented with some paid staff or there is no-one to organize all the good intentions and make sure the clients are served. As our country continues to call on our military to do the work, I a proud to say the citizens of the US have stood up to help support these families so their service member can focus on the job at hand - whether it be deployment or recovery and transition. Very respectfully. SVH

Its true that every body wants its money to reach as much needy as it could........ so i suggest every one who wants to give a share to some charity they should donate it to the recognized organization who really convey your help to the real needy..................
