Woman loses $1 million inside mattress
If you haven't heard this tale yet, you will. I imagine media outlets everywhere are going to jump on this.According to a story on CNN.com, In Tel Aviv, Israel, a woman gave her elderly mother a new mattress. It was a gift, and the daughter tossed out the old bed.
Well, the mother had her life savings stuffed inside the mattress -- almost $1 million.
So as you read this, there's a huge search going on at the city dump with security guards keeping out the public, fearing, of course, that otherwise there's going to be something resembling the California gold rush of 1849.
Critics will point out that the woman should have put her money somewhere safer, like in a bank, where her money could have been collecting interest.
And many people who hide their money in their bedroom may be rethinking their savings strategy. Or maybe not. After all, the old chestnut is that you hide your money under the mattress, not inside it.

Considering this is in Tel Aviv, I would assume that her elderly mother is a Holocaust survivor or someone who needed to flee her country - in that situation, banks are not very safe.
It could be out of habit, it could be of fear that tomorrow Israel won't exist...

A lot of elderly people don't trust banks for their life savings. In many ways I can not blame them. It's a pitty that this happened to her, maybe next time the daughter will atleast keep the old untill mom says it's ok to throw away. I applaud the city for trying to help the mom find her money.
As for the poll - I like the tampon box idea, who would be looking in your tampon box. Although if your elderly I doubt that you would have one laying around.

You're SO right about that Jack!!! I've NEVER trusted banks due to an issue we had with our first bank but sadly, we can't just keep our money in our homes like our parents use to back in the days so.....

There is something to what you say about the possible lack of safety in banks, but at least some interest would accrue, assuming the bank doesn't fail. When my grandmother died I inherited her estate, which included keys to several safety deposit boxes in 2 banks. Between the two of them there was nearly $30,000 in cash, all with bills dated no later than 1934. Nana hid the money there during the great depression, and it took me years to spend down that cash, not that I am complaining. However, that same sum in any account from 1934-1998 would easily have been ten times what it was.

I hide my little money stash that my husband don't know about in a old suit in my closet. He would never think about looking there. He doesn't know about my little rainy day fund.

I heard about a guy who found an old suit in his closet he hadn't worn in over 5 years. In one of the pockets was a ticket to get some shoes repaired that he had forgotten all about. He decided to see if they still had his shoes. He went to the shoe shop, handed the 5-year-old ticket to the clerk who said with a big smile, "Oh yes! They'll be ready Friday." (badabing)

Ron, that's an old joke from a 40-year-old comedy album, "When You're In Love, The Whole World is Jewish."
Tara, maybe you don't know about his little stash, either. Too bad you don't trust each other enough to be honest.

My son and his former wife would put $300. into a margarine tub every week and put it in the refrigerator for their monthly rent. One day my son came home from work to find his wife hysterical! She had thrown the margarine cup with $900. into the garbage and emptied the garbage into the dumb waiter. My son quickly put on boots and rubber gloves and a face mask and went out and climbed into the dumpster and after raking through a lot of horrible stuff, finally found the bag containing the margarine cup which still contained his money thank heavens! Now he does On Line banking, LOL

Someone came into my house and stole the $10 million I had hidden in my mattress. Of course, I don't have any proof that I actually had the money, but I'm sure my insurance will pay off anyway. That's why I pay their premiums.

Nope! Must be evidence of break-in, otherwise people would be reporting thefts of non-exsistant property.
