Most, least expensive cars to insure
If you're among the alpha wave of car shoppers returning to the showrooms, here's a tip: before you sign on the bottom line for that shiny new ride, check on the cost of insurance. The wrong choice can cost you thousands per year. Insure.com has just released its list of the most and least expensive vehicles to insure.
Leading the pack in the highest cost to insure is the Nissan GT-R, Motor Trend's Car of the Year. This lightening-fast production car claims to be able to cruise at 185+ mph. I suppose if you can afford one at $76,840, you won't worry about the $2,533 per year insurance.
The top 10 for 2009:
- Nissan GT-R, $2,533
- Dodge Viper, $2,446
- BMW M6, $2,236
- Ford Shelby GT500, $2,186
- Mercedes-Benz G-Class, $2,088
- Audi S8, $2,071
- BMW M5, $2,202
- Hummer H2, $1,912
- Lexus IS F, $1,881
- Porsche 911, $1,819
Looking for a bargain? Then check out the ten cars with the lowest insurance cost:
- Hyundai Santa Fe, $832
- Kia Sportage, $840
- Hyundai Entourage
- Kia Sedona, $857
- Kia Rio5, $870
- Honda Odyssey, $871
- Smart Fortwo, $881
- Saturn VUE, $911
- Mazda Tribute, $913
- Chrysler Town and Country, $915
Remember, the sales price of a new car is only part of its overall cost of operation. If you can see through the illusion that what you drive is who you are, you can bank a lot of cash by driving a vehicle that is cheap to insure. And to my way of thinking, a hefty investment portfolio is much sexier.

Did you that you can buy cars that have been seized by the government for as little as 10 cents on the dollar? I learned all about it here http://tiny.cc/GovtAutoAuction and bought my last 2 cars that way and saved over $8,000.
You can also get the lowest prices on auto insurance at this web site http://cli.gs/DiscountAutoInsuranceChoice

Like most other people my wife and I are making less this year than we did the past few years. We decided to go through all of our expenses to see where we could save money. Auto and health insurance were a couple of big expenses that we felt we could get lower prices for. First I found this web site http://cli.gs/DiscountAutoInsuranceChoice where I was able to get free comparative auto insurance quotes without having to be bothered by any insurance agents. We ended up saving almost $900 for our 2 cars. Since that worked out so well I did some research and found http://cli.gs/AllInsuranceQuotes , a web site that was able to get me quotes from just about every great health insurance plan. Unbelievably I ended up with a better health insurance plan than the one we had and still saved a little over $200 a month!!!! So for less than a half hour of my time I will be saving about $3200 a year. In this economy that's REAL money.

It shouldn't be about the car, it should be about the driver. At 48 years old and driving for 32 years, I have never had a wreck or even a speeding ticket. I have owned sport cars, 4x4s, luxery cars etc. I like cars and am lucky enough to be able to afford several of the vehicles I want . With high deductables, I shouldn't have to pay any more for insurance than someone who chooses to drive a Kia or some other bottom of the barrel vehicle.

Dave..aren't you special. Wouldn't it be nice if we all could drive top of the line vehicles and not have to settle for "bottom" of the line. Car insurance is based on replacement value of the vehicle and other factors. Why should I pay as much for insurance on my $16,000 vs. a $35,000 plus vehicle. I think a person who's states that they have never gotten a speeding ticket is just lucky, for it is a rare person who can claim that they have "never" ever gone over the speed limit. And it only takes a split second for that not so good driver to involve You the perfect driver in a mishap!

The writer of this article must be puffing on weed. Nissan (Japanese) does not own Hyundai (Korean).

Robert, if you read my post you would have seen that I said "with a higher deductable" my insurance shouldn't be more. That would make up for cost difference. As far as your split second excuse. There is something called defensive driving. Don't assume the other guy will do what they're suppose to. It's not about luck, it's about being careful and following the law. Check statistics. 90-95 % of accidents could have been prevented with defensive driving. Also, don't assume I paid 35000 for a car. If you buy a 2 year old vehicle you can save half. In other words, I paid the same price for my BMW with 20000 miles on it that you paid for your Kia. To each his own.

Great points, Dave! Evidently, your first post was not read correctly. I have gotten speeding tickets, but it was definitely my fault and I learned my lesson to abide by the law. As far as luxury cars, you made a great point about getting a 2 year old car versus a brand new Kia. I went car "browsing" over the weekend and flipped out when I saw a candy red 2006 Mercedes CLK 350, 22K miles for $29K!!!

Dave,
You are always going to find those that envy others! I appplaud you for having the ability to own the vehicles you want! I wish more people would take that initiative, and push themselves to further greatness, instead of mediocrity! I have 2 Fords (not entry level), and a Porsche. My driving record is clean. I have had ONE speeding ticket in 28 years, completely my fault. While I understand the financial difference in the vehicles, I believe that ALL aspects of the insureds' situation needs to be reviewed. I'll bet Robert would probably, also have an issue that I get a preferred rate, because my credit rating is 790! I choose to keep my affairs in order. I choose to own the vehicles I own. I don't believe I should have to pay 4 times the rate of someone who chooses to own a spartan vehicle, just because of the name plate!

The article at least gets it right where it points out that if you can get past the "illusion that what you drive is who you are" you can save a lot of money. That is very true, although the problem is that so many people can't get past this! There are so many people out there who are very insecure about their perceived "social status" that they feel it necessary to purchase expensive "luxury" or "sports" cars or giant SUV's in order to compensate for their insecurities. How many people that drive these giant Hummers do you actually see ever driving off-road which is what they are designed for? Almost none, if any. Then of course they complain when the price of gas goes to $4 a gallon; it's pretty laugable...

We're doing pretty doggone well this year and I've decided to purchase me a new "toy," an MV Augusta or a Ducati Desmosedichi. Good thing I'm paying cash for it as the insurance man told me NOTHING I wanted to hear. Seems that a Dodge Viper would be "childsplay" to insure compared to either of these two motorbikes with my record. Who in heck cares? If the price of insuring the car, boat, aircraft, Class 3 Firearm, or in my case, the bike of my dreams comes into question while deciding in your head, which would complement your looks best with you operating it, then you might need to rethink the purchase to something your lacking broke bohiney can afford. Like a Kia, Hyundai, or whatever.
When I'm top ending one of these Italian beast down the curvacious side of a mountain top road in complete control........Well if you havent done it, YOU SHOULD at least once in your life!!
LIVE LARGE, LIVE AMERICAN, cause you can't do this kind of stuff in France by golly!

I don't even have an income and the Shelby 500 that is waiting for me in the garage I'll never be able to afford it let alone the V-6, why are the imports so much less if ya get into an accident with one of those ugly Kia's your gonna get hurt, Saturn isn't much better looking. If you have a high performance car you can get cheap insurance thru Hagerty's but it can nor be your main car. AMERICAN MADE MUSCLE is what i say!!

Unfortunately we dont all have roscoe's cash. In fact the country is the way it is from too many people over spending....
As for the article, is it news or common sense that the fast, fancy cars are expensive to insure, and the cheap tinny cars that are incapable of getting out of the way are cheaper to insure? I know someone that drove into a parking block at 15 mph ( yes, a "duh" maneuver) and bent up their Kia's front end to the tune of several grand. IN the end, was that car really a bargain?
Since I cant afford these pricey cars, and wouldnt entertain the junk called " the least expensive cars to insure", I will continue to enjoy my Z71 Avalanche, which by the way was cheaper to insure than a full sized 2 door Chevy pickup.when considering a purchase , call your insurance company and check the rates. you can give them a VIN # to check this rather easily.
And, as fas as safety goes, you could be killed or remain alive in something heavy duty or in something featherlight, cuz when its your time to go, it doesnt matter.

Miss A, be thoughtful before buying that pretty "pull me over red" car. they really do get more tickets, and if you lve in a sunny climate, red paint oxidizes rather quickly.

Of course Kia and Hyundai are cheap to insure. They are crap, and it doesn't cost much to insure crap. They are cheap to fix, are usually totaled out at 35% damage, and have no resale value. It also costs the insurance company less to settle a death claim than it does a major bodily injury claim. Hmmmm, I wonder if KIA/Hyundai are paying advertisers on AOL? They are both owned by the same parent company in South Korea. Next story up here on AOL......Another why is GM bankrupt story.
