It shouldn't be about the car, it should be about the driver. At 48 years old and driving for 32 years, I have never had a wreck or even a speeding ticket. I have owned sport cars, 4x4s, luxery cars etc. I like cars and am lucky enough to be able to afford several of the vehicles I want . With high deductables, I shouldn't have to pay any more for insurance than someone who chooses to drive a Kia or some other bottom of the barrel vehicle.

Robert, if you read my post you would have seen that I said "with a higher deductable" my insurance shouldn't be more. That would make up for cost difference. As far as your split second excuse. There is something called defensive driving. Don't assume the other guy will do what they're suppose to. It's not about luck, it's about being careful and following the law. Check statistics. 90-95 % of accidents could have been prevented with defensive driving. Also, don't assume I paid 35000 for a car. If you buy a 2 year old vehicle you can save half. In other words, I paid the same price for my BMW with 20000 miles on it that you paid for your Kia. To each his own.

The article at least gets it right where it points out that if you can get past the "illusion that what you drive is who you are" you can save a lot of money. That is very true, although the problem is that so many people can't get past this! There are so many people out there who are very insecure about their perceived "social status" that they feel it necessary to purchase expensive "luxury" or "sports" cars or giant SUV's in order to compensate for their insecurities. How many people that drive these giant Hummers do you actually see ever driving off-road which is what they are designed for? Almost none, if any. Then of course they complain when the price of gas goes to $4 a gallon; it's pretty laugable...

We're doing pretty doggone well this year and I've decided to purchase me a new "toy," an MV Augusta or a Ducati Desmosedichi. Good thing I'm paying cash for it as the insurance man told me NOTHING I wanted to hear. Seems that a Dodge Viper would be "childsplay" to insure compared to either of these two motorbikes with my record. Who in heck cares? If the price of insuring the car, boat, aircraft, Class 3 Firearm, or in my case, the bike of my dreams comes into question while deciding in your head, which would complement your looks best with you operating it, then you might need to rethink the purchase to something your lacking broke bohiney can afford. Like a Kia, Hyundai, or whatever.
When I'm top ending one of these Italian beast down the curvacious side of a mountain top road in complete control........Well if you havent done it, YOU SHOULD at least once in your life!!

I don't even have an income and the Shelby 500 that is waiting for me in the garage I'll never be able to afford it let alone the V-6, why are the imports so much less if ya get into an accident with one of those ugly Kia's your gonna get hurt, Saturn isn't much better looking. If you have a high performance car you can get cheap insurance thru Hagerty's but it can nor be your main car. AMERICAN MADE MUSCLE is what i say!!

The insurance is up to the driver. Retired, no tickets or accidents in over 9 years. Drive 3000 miles a year. Full coverage on my Chevy Impala, 632.00 a year.

Unfortunately we dont all have roscoe's cash. In fact the country is the way it is from too many people over spending....

As for the article, is it news or common sense that the fast, fancy cars are expensive to insure, and the cheap tinny cars that are incapable of getting out of the way are cheaper to insure? I know someone that drove into a parking block at 15 mph ( yes, a "duh" maneuver) and bent up their Kia's front end to the tune of several grand. IN the end, was that car really a bargain?
Since I cant afford these pricey cars, and wouldnt entertain the junk called " the least expensive cars to insure", I will continue to enjoy my Z71 Avalanche, which by the way was cheaper to insure than a full sized 2 door Chevy pickup.when considering a purchase , call your insurance company and check the rates. you can give them a VIN # to check this rather easily.
And, as fas as safety goes, you could be killed or remain alive in something heavy duty or in something featherlight, cuz when its your time to go, it doesnt matter.

Miss A, be thoughtful before buying that pretty "pull me over red" car. they really do get more tickets, and if you lve in a sunny climate, red paint oxidizes rather quickly.

Of course Kia and Hyundai are cheap to insure. They are crap, and it doesn't cost much to insure crap. They are cheap to fix, are usually totaled out at 35% damage, and have no resale value. It also costs the insurance company less to settle a death claim than it does a major bodily injury claim. Hmmmm, I wonder if KIA/Hyundai are paying advertisers on AOL? They are both owned by the same parent company in South Korea. Next story up here on AOL......Another why is GM bankrupt story.
