Funny how they say Dunkin' DONUTS and National DONUT Day, but then say "Doughnut" after that. Doughnut looks retarded. People say it's because they're made of dough. Yeah okay. Are they also made of nuts? It even says National DONUT Day.

The earliest recorded use of "doughnut," is in Washington Irving's account of life in 1809 New York, makes it clear that he is referring to "dough nuts" -- "balls of sweetened dough, fried in hog fat." The Dutch who settled New York called them "olykoeks," a name still in use in Irving's day. These primordial doughnuts had no holes. "Doughnut," means a small amount of dough that fries up looking like a nut.
As for the hole, that came latter around 1847 when a ship's chef didn't like the greasiness of the olykoeks (Dutch for oily cakes) decided to put a hole in them to reduce the amount of grease the doughnut would hold.
As in all languages, the spoken and written word always changes due to frequency of use. So, donut or doughnut is now acceptable.
Now, you can see that I am bored.

Also, "doughnut" is the correct spelling in the AP Stylebook, which is pretty much the bible for most news organizations. They can spell it as "donut" when it's being used as a proper noun, as in National Donut Day or Dunkin Donuts. So, yup.

Great, neither one are anywhere near me. (even though Krispy Kreme found a way to sell at other stores) Theres a Dunkin Donuts a mile and a half from my house (out of my way), but to deal will traffic, 3 lights, Walmart parking, and actually walk into Walmart. Its just not worth it. Not for one free donut. If I just happened to be inside, thats one thing, but Im not making a special trip just for that.
Stand alone donut shops make the most business in my town.

You are kidding right? That's the stupidest thing I have ever heard. I guess it's a good thing there isn't a donut place convenient to you, like in your living room, because someone as lazy as you doesn't need to be shoving sugary treats in their mouth. Why did you even post that? Do you strain yourself sweetie? How whiney are YOU?????
Honestly the only post worth reading on here was Derek Adams pimping himself...bwahahaha

Thanks for the doughnut history lesson. I found it interesting. Sadly, I will not be having a Dunkin doughnut or donut because I can't eat wheat. Maybe I'll pick up some gluten-free at the store to celebrate.

I think this is a great idea! Also, if you go to Dunkin Donuts late enough, they give you the leftover munchkins. Thanks for that bit of donut history, ive always wondered why it was spelled two different ways and where it got its name from. Hm..interesting.

"Donut" rather than "doughnut" has always been a pet peeve of mine because it, to me, hides the history, of which I have been pretty much aware; I am grateful to Eileen and the boredom that led her to add more to my obscure knowledge. Etymology is fascinating; I like words that reflect their origin/first uses. I also am fond of precise use of language: we have so many words with slightly different meanings—I would hate to lose the differences (obviously meaning loss is not an issue with doughnut/donut).
Glad I stopped by; I won't be eating free fried bread, but I expanded my knowledge.

When the ship's chef cut holes to reduce grease (ugh!), he took the ugh out of doughnuts, inventing donuts. That etymology works for me. Besides, considering the cost of large signs, what donut shop would want to pay for three unnecessary and perhaps derogatory or defamatory letters?
But dieters may continue to think of them as dough--nuts!
and as do-nots.
