Wal-Mart to have fewer toys in cleanup campaign
Filed under: Shopping, Consumer Complaints
Wal-Mart is reducing its toy space by more than half and making other changes in a "fast, friendly, clean" concept intended to attract shoppers shun the retail giant because its stores are cluttered.By dropping its toy loss-leader strategy and focusing on a more consumer-friendly store layout, Wal-Mart looks to be moving toward high-growth opportunities, according to Toy Directory Online, a trade magazine for the toy, hobby, game and gift industry.
While the major toy brands will still be available at Wal-Mart, there will be fewer toys overall and smaller toy makers will likely be pushed out.
The changes started April 20, with plans to roll it out over less than a quarter of Wal-Mart's U.S. stores by this summer. After gauging consumer reaction and implementing any tweaks, the "fast, friendly, clean" plan to be moved to all of its remaining stores.
It sounds like makeovers that Target and Kmart have done to attract shoppers who want a better quality shopping experience.
Along with less toy shelf space, the plan includes less space for crafts products, phasing out fabrics from all stores that still carry the department, and moving crafts to a less traffic-intensive area such as to the lawn and garden area.
Aisles will be wider and displays at the ends of aisles will be less bulky. This may sound like a small complaint, but I was at a Kmart the other day and what keeps me from shopping there more are the narrow aisles and clutter I have to push the cart around to get anywhere.
There are plenty of places to buy toys, and a lot less clutter should make Wal-Mart a better place to shop.

WalMart is phasing out everything I like and phasing in...what.I haven't noticed anything new or different, maybe because I don't shop the game isles. And, by the way, there are not "plenty of places to buy toys" or anything else in my little town. Wonder why.

The only difference I see is that everything is moved around and difficult to find.......so far they haven't touched the pet food or hardware if they do then I'll find somewhere else to shop.

I used to love Wal-Mart. BUT....ours switched to a supercenter a couple years ago and they went from a great department store to a not even mediocre department and a crummy food store combo. I only shop there now when everything else is closed. Too bad.

You are so right they change everything around so you cant find it and then think you will buy more since you willl have to wade through it. And there are also very few places to buy toys in my area either. Walmart was the place to go to find anything. so all it will be hurting are the kids... go figure may be bad mistake who do you think gets the parents to buy all of them .... your loss

I am really surprised by this. Wal-Mart has always been a great place to get deals on toys. Since Kaybee Toys closed, the options for toy shopping are really going down. Too bad about this, I think it's not good news... What will they get rid of next...?

Wal Mart forced all mom and pop businesses out with cheap low priced crap. They buy in such a lerge volume (much cheaper price), so they undercut the American private owned stores.
Also they have nothing UNIQUE......

That's just it! Walmart squeezed out the competition so there's no reason to compete! No they set the market for whatever they want to sell not what you used to buy beforethey pulled it!

I would like to know where those "plenty of other places to buy toys" are! The only place to buy a toy in the mall near my home is in Target. Wal-Mart is the company that forced the closing of other "toy only" stores, like Kaybee Toys, because people liked the one-stop-shop idea as well as the cheaper prices. Interesting that Wal-Mart is cutting their toy department now that they have forced the closing of the smaller toy stores! Great Job!!!!!!!!!!!!

Walmart has been doing this for years. It is only when it directily affects a consumer do they realize what has been lost by shopping at WalMart. Freedom is a choice not a price tag.

Don't blame Wal-Mart. People spend their money - Wal-Mart doesn't make them spend it there. If people quit complaining about Wal-Mart (while shopping there) and spent their money in the other stores - Wal-Mart wouldn't have made those profit. Wal-Mart didn't run the small business out - people did this on their own by not shopping at the smaller places. we blame Wal-Mart for using the same business tactics as Honda, etc - yet we drive around in foreign cars but blame Ford and GM. Wake up America!

walmart lost us for christmas shopping when they did away with lay-a-way now we do that at k-mart ..
I noticed walmart has been getting rid of alot of the things we usually go there for and stocking the shelves with some of the same products that are on different aisles so it "looks"full..
Target is ok but it has an empty feel to it not alot of choice .
I like to have a choice in what I get I hate having to get something becuase its the only thing there or having to drive to 3 or 4 different stores to find something..

We have a "High Efficiency" Walmart near us, and OMG! They shouldnt even call it a Walmart. It looks nothing like a Wamart on the outside or in. Aisle are huge, and guess what? They dont dump crap in them! That was one of my biggest issues with walmart. Its bad enough inconsiderate shoppers toss things on the floor, but the main aisles, where 4 shopping carts could move side by side, was always cluttered with "roll back" junk that could already be found elsewhere in the store. This made the aisles only big enough for two carts. And since, "OMG, its a rollback!" people would park their carts in the main aisle, making it very difficult to maneuver, and even some times blocking the entire main aisle!!!
Now the High Efficiency Walmart seems to have a smaller toy section than normal Walmarts, but what Ive noticed, with all their aisle crap, everything they blocked aisles with was always on the shelves. Even during the holidays, when half of the garden area is dedicated to toys, every item there could easily be found elsewhere in the store.
I dont think this is about fewer toys, fewer Disney Princess merchandise. I think this is about fewer Disney Princess Beauty and the Beast purple limited edition plastic tea cut sets.
Rock Band (which was found near registers as well as in electronics) is NOT an impulse item... ..and if it is, then no wonder the economy is messed up... ...layaway, credit cards, etc... ...There are only certain things I can see people getting who dont have the money. Home loan, student loan, maybe even a car loan, and unexpected medical expenses. Oh, and becoming pregnant isnt an "unexpected medical expense." Funeral, maybe.
If you cant afford these "gifts" for your love ones, they need to understand why. If they cant accept that fact than you dont want anything to do with them, since obviously the relationship was based solely on money. And if these are children, then you need to set them down and teach them the value of a dollar. "Dont have the money" is much better than having them think "Mommy doesnt love us, thats why."

I am surprised that Walmart is not going to sell as many toys. But perhaps then other stores like Toys R Us will be able to survive. There seems to be so many stores disappearing and going bankrupt, it is really getting very disturbing.

Then we would have nothing to complain about. Life would be great. But unfortunately, we have both. Bush may be out of office, but his effects will live on for a long long painful time.....
