Salute this: JetBlue offers $1 fares for active military
Filed under: Bargains, Transportation, Travel
Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what an airline can do for your country. In honor of National Military Appreciation Month, JetBlue Airlines is offering $1 fares for domestic travel to all active military personnel. But hurry, you'll have to book by tomorrow.
Proof of eligibility is required, and restrictions are plentiful, but then soldiers are used to that. This offer applies to departures from two airports, Washington Dulles International Airport in Dulles, Va., and Richmond International Airport in Richmond, Va.
Servicemembers must book on or before May 7 for travel between May 8 and May 31 from Dulles or Richmond to any JetBlue destination in the continental United States served nonstop from those airports.
Upon check-in, military travelers must present a valid Department of Defense common access card and official documentation at the JetBlue service counter verifying authorized leave from duty to show proof of active status. According to the press release, failure to present these documents will void the reservation. The fare is available to active-duty servicemembers only.
Unfortunately, retirees, reservists and military families are on their own.
An important detail: you can't book these fares online or at the service counter. To book the $1 fare, call 1-800-JETBLUE (538-2583) and select Option 4.
Servicemembers are responsible for applicable taxes and fees.
The airline also will donate $15,000 to the Wounded Warrior Project, a nonprofit organization that honors and empowers wounded soldiers.

Salute what? JetBlue slapping soldiers, retirees and their families in the face because they wanted to live a normal life as well as serve their country? "Sorry, but retirees, reservists, and military families are on their own". SORRY?! I am absolutely outraged at the way you pushed aside these groups of people like they don't support the country just as much. To date, 2/3 if not more of the soldiers sent to Iraq have been Reserves or National Guard. By the way, I am a reservist finishing up my second tour in Iraq in three and a half years. 35 people in my unit including myself, all reservists, volunteered to be here. To leave their families, wives, husbands and children to serve our country. So exactly what about that makes us not Active Duty? Retirees? Please, tell me that you'd rather give a flight for $1 to a soldier who just joined rather than a soldier who served for 20 or more years supporting this country through SEVERAL conflicts. I think we all deserve it, but I'm just stating my opinion from your point of view. How about veterans? How about my husband's 92 year old great grandfather who is the only WWII veteran from Wisconsin left? You mean to tell me that he doesn't deserve a flight for $1? How about the families of those wounded or killed in action? Or the families who pick up and move every 3 years when it's time to PCS? You mean to tell me that they don't deserve it? You, maam, need to seriously consider your words before you say, or in your case, type them. It sounds to me like you've never served a day in the military. Please don't tuck your tail between your legs either. I can't wait to hear your response.

Janon, thank you for your service to our country. If you are indeed on a tour, you are indeed active duty. I am not sure if you have an entitlement complex or if you are just a "glass half empty" type of person. Did you think about the fact that if the company offering the "gift" offered it to dependents etc that it could be riotous and possibly fiscally damaging to the company. Leading to another case of tax payers (a lot of the folks that never served a day in thier life) to not only pay your salary but bail out another bankrupt company. Hummmm maybe it would just be better to say thank you for the offer.

JANON......I totally agree completely with your opinions, I am sure whopever wrote the requirements to jet Blues Nice offering to the soldiers didn't really give it much thought, and perhaps they will recind the restrictions, or perhaps as an airline standing totally alone they can't afford to give everyone the ride passes they surely deserve. Whatever there case let me just interject this.....QUOTE, "WHY AREN'T ANY OF THE OTHER AIRLINES CHIPPING IN TO HELP WITH OWN BROTHERS AND SISTERS FIGHTING FOR OUR FREEDOMS AROUND THE GLOBE PAST AND PRESENT???? WHY IS JUST JET BLUE STEPPING TO THE PLATE AND OFFERING THIS???? I APPLAUD THEM EVEN THOUGH THEY SHOULD RENEGOTIATE THE AGREEMENT THEY PUBLISHED AND AT THE SAME TIME I AM TOTALLY ASHAMED AT ALL THE OTHER AIRLINES FOR NOT HELPING OUT OUR MILITARY SOLDIERS, VETERANS, ESPECIALLY NATIONAL GUARDSMEN AND RESERVISTS AND THERE FAMILIES FOR ALL THAT THEY DO FOR THE LITTLE THEY EARN AND FOR THE ULTIMATE SACRIFICE SO MANY HAVE MADE IN ORDER FOR US TO SURVIVE AS A FREE NATION!!!! COME ON CONTINENTAL!!! HOW ABOUT YOU DELTA??? AND YOU SOUTHWEST??? WHAT ABOUT ALL THE REST????? COME ON HELP OUT SHOW YOUR PATRIOTIC VALUES TO THE WORLD PERHAPS IF MORE FOLKS DID WE WOULD BE LIVING IN A BETTER ENVIRONMENT FOR OURSELVES AND OUR FAMILIES!!

EXCUSE ME--- "Free stuff"?????????? What world do you live in, and have you ever come home from overseas, and had to pay enormous fees, bec your trying to get home to see your family? The airlines don't give any discounts because these service members have served in the "snadbox" for a year!
I hope the planes are full of servicemen taking advantage of this gift from Jet Blue,,,why don't you meander over to an airport and watch the faces of their parents or little kids when they get off a plane.
Shame on you!!!!!

The military does not receive "too many free things". We pay taxes like everyone else. We pay rent and utilities like everyone else. We pay our car payments and even our own insurance. Occasionally we may receive a 10% discount as a way of a company saying thanks for what you do to protect our country and our freedoms. Clearly you are not a selfless person that is capable of putting your country and countrymen before you and your own selfish needs. I have lost countless friends to hatred and terrorism while they protected YOUR lame butt. Perhaps the next time you are able to go outside and enjoy the freedoms of fresh air, safe streets and a non-hostile environment, you'll think of me and my family enjoying 10% off of the smoothie you just paid full price for. Freedom isn't free. We don't get to choose who we can protect, so . . . I guess your freedoms are part of the deal.

You are an idiot. You have no idea what the military give up day in and day out. There is no way you can even imagine what the kids give up. Sure they gain alot in culture but they don't have a real hometown and very few traditions. The friends change year after year as people come and go. You need to get out and meet some Soldiers!!!!

Hey Earl.... what is wrong with you???
A lot of the miltary got the ultimate sacrifice for free.....what did you and what do you do for anyone other than yourself????
I guarantee nothing in your life is done for anyone other than yourself.... have you ever done anything for free Earl, volunteered to help others for free??? To make a statement like that ...the military gets too much for free is just redundant on your behalf dont you agree???? Please respond back in a nice way we all would like to really know what type of individual you are.
Are you an American or are you an outsider??

Jet Blue, thanks for taking care of the troops...two suggestions:
1) Think a little about how you present this "gift" to the
American Soldier. Reserve Component personnel, who
shoulder a tremendous burden, do not need to be made
to feel like their efforts are somehow less-deserving.
2) Restricting departure points greatly diminishes the value
of your "gift", making it one of convenience. You would
do well to apply this effort throughout your system. Of all
the Military personnel traveling to and fro, a relative few
live in/around the D.C./Richmond area.
I would be willing to bet that this program was conceived and presented by someone who never wore a uniform in service to this Nation, and therefore has absolutely no conception of the needs of their "target audience". A "round-two" effort of this program might go a long way in salvaging what might be politely deemed a gaffe.

To Janon:
We hear you sir but any company/individual can only donate just so
much or it would not be in business for very long. JB deserves at least
a little "thumbs up" from all of us. Yes, and from you too.
To Earl:
Being a regular on JB flights glad to hear I don't have to worry about you being on the same plane!

Good job
Couple months ago Delta was faced with sending a married miltary couple home to see their son on an earlier flight.
Delta said NO
I thought airlines should do more.I am in favor of a tax for miltary relief on flights for our men and women to get home fast after duty
Again ,great job - GOOD IDEA
