Defriended! Woman fired for surfing Facebook after calling in sick
Filed under: Technology, Career
A Swiss insurance worker who called in sick because she said she couldn't work in front of a computer and needed to lie in the dark was fired for surfing Facebook while off sick, according to a Reuters story. The unnamed woman abused the trust of insurer Nationale Suisse, the company said, leading to the firing.
The woman told a newspaper in Zurich that she had been surfing Facebook in bed on her iPhone and accused her employer of spying on her and other employees by sending a friend request that allows access to personal online activity.
The employer denied the accusation, saying that her Facebook activity had been stumbled upon by a colleague in November, before using the site at work was blocked by the company.

The woman lied to get out of work. Why blame it on her kids? Teach the kids its OK to lie. Where did all the honest people go? If she was getting sick pay, thats stealing.

Ms. Butler:
Just want to inform you that you will be the next topic of discussion for my Medial Law & Ethics module. I teach young adults at a vocational school specializing in the healthcare field. By suggesting that the lady in the above story lie and blame her already unethical actions on her children you have just highlighted for my students why the code of ethics we are all (including you) to adhere to in our field is so important. How can anyone trust a potential liar (as you have now announced yourself to be) with their private health information? Shame on you. Hope your boss sees your post!

No, it's not "stealing".......surfing Facebook while on the clock is "stealing".....staying home and getting paid a benefit day is not "stealing".
Look out..."Big Brother" is watching.....I cannot even begin to imagine a world in which my employer dictates what I can and cannot do at home. It's not like she was up in the mountains skiing....she was HOME. Where is it written that when one takes a sick day, they must stay in bed from 9-5 and not do ANYTHING for fear of losing their job?
I'll bet Mr. Perfect up above NEVER called in sick just because he was sick of work......Naw......Bullchit.....he has plenty of times.

That is ridiculous. It's an invasion of privacy, a person can be sick and still use the internet if they want to. It's THEIR personal computer after all.
Well I SUPPOSE that she would also get fired for turning on her t.v. or even CALLING someone on the telephone!
It is so idiotic to spy on workers like this.I would sue the company for all it's worth, this just isn't right.
It's the equivalent of stalking someone.

I went to your web site Jennifer. I would expect a nurse to have more integrity. Seems like you have a lot of axes to grind. Instead of spending all that time complaining why not go to med school? Or maybe just do your job!

We really don't need for Ms. Butler to stay in the medical field. I would never trust someone who suggests lying (and blaming children) as a means to defend inappropriate behavior to have access to my confidential medical info. I hope her boss sees her post and thinks about whether or not she can be trusted to comport herself in an ethical fashion at work.

HARDWORKER, Jennifer is not a nurse, she is a NURSE PRACTITIONER, which is one step away from being a Dr. She doesn't need to go to med school!
Seriously, get a grip. She was joking about blaming it on the kids, just trying to make a point. Ever heard of LOL??????
I'm wondering how checking your FB account when you're out sick is worse than being on facebook on company time when you are at work, like the "someone" that "stumbled" across her on FB.

Interesting that Jennifer Butler, FNP - a nurse whose code of ethics demands INTEGRITY and ETHICAL BEHAVIOR - would suggest LYING as a way to handle ANY situation! I teach Medical Coding, Billing and Anatomy at a vocational school, but prior to that I was an Office Manager for Physician's Practices for over 25 years. Ms. Butler is an example of why the medical field is losing respect faster than lawyers. How can you trust someone with your personal, private health (and financial!) info who does not adhere to the highest level of ethicality? I will be using her as an example in my next Medical Law & Ethics module! Thanks Ms. Butler!

Kristin, your records, my records and everyone's records are being transcribed in foreign countries where "ethics, confidentialty are a joke. Do you really believe that the people in foreign countries transcribing and coding your records give a running rats rear about not spreading your medical business if they so desired. However, I do applaud that fact that you will use this type of situation to teach "trust, etc" in our class. Perhaps, some of your students will retain this information, I certainly hope so.

Actually it's funny that you mention that consider I always thought that the recent loss in trust for the medical profession was do the copious amounts of Doctor's who could give less than a rats posterior about anything except whether or not you have an insurance and if you do, how to completely drag the time of your stay on in the hospital to get paid all the more. You're beating a dead horse by going on and on about Jennifer Butler when frankly it is trivial and not at all interesting nor amusing for you to do so. You might want to go to the Doctor's as well and get that missing sense checked out. I'm sure you know the one.. the sense of humor.

If all of my patients that I care for daily could read your post Miss Kristin you would probably be stoned. You are so wrong right now about your judgement. You are who should be ashamed for judging someone so harshly and saying such rude and cruel things to someone you do not know. How quickly you misinterpret and jump to conclusions. How quickly are you to judge someone else. My comment was based on my own experience of my 8 yr old daughter using my cell phone to call "911" and "hannah montana". I am certainly not suggesting someone LIE maliciously and blame their children if they are in the wrong. You obviously took my comment wrong. Either way, I do not appreciate your harsh words and insults. I viewed this story one way, ..you viewed it another. I do not attack you personally and/or professionally for your opinion on your view of this story, and do not think you have the right or authority to attack mine.
Please look at all views of things you hear, see, or read. This is "ethics". you know.."Do unto others"..
Had the shoe been on the other foot...I would have voiced my opinion of this story, but directed it at the story, not at someone else's view of the story. I could sit here and attack you the same way, but I am not going to. You have done your own damage for the world to see and I am sorry for you for the way you view the world and others. In this day and age, how can anyone think that they have any privacy? The moment you walk out your door you are probably on camera somewhere or if you are online everything you do is logged somewhere. Thats a given. Thats one of technologys downfalls. We just have to get used to it. So don't be stupid and make bad choices that will come back to haunt you.I for one like the idea. That way we know who and where the nuts are. Nothing dumber than a person who goes into a bank with 6-7 cameras pointed right at them. DUH. She got caught...now pay up.

Sounds like somebody is jealous of Jennifer. Perhaps one could lighten up and realize that it's not always accurate to judge someone by a couple of sentences in a post.

Here here! I think people are over reacting to Jen's comment about blaming the kids. Who cares? Seriously, there's a recession out there and at this point, blaming kids for something as petty as surfing Face Book isn't a big deal. What's a big deal is losing a job over something like that and not being able to FEED YOUR KIDS because of that. I'd have lied my ass off. I need to keep working. And by the way, its downtime right now which is why I can type this.

I agree with everyone on how inappropriate and immoral J. Butler's comment was. I thought I remember that name from somewhere. She's trying to open her own private family practice.
Here is her blog...
