No big surprises for the men. Low income men tend to be in more physical jobs while upper income men usually have white collar jobs. But why are the poor women so overweight?I see this all the time with clients and families at the school where my husband teaches. These families often live in poor neighborhoods that have fast food drive-ins on every corner. Absent are high quality food markets with fresh fruits and vegetables. It becomes the norm to eat high fat, low nutrition fast food on a daily basis.
Too often, a hamburger, fries and coke are viewed as a "balanced diet" while they pack on the calories. This norm for eating and resulting weight gain are viewed as normal by too many of the poor people we see.
Recently, my husband told me of a grossly overweight 6th grader who could barely climb the stairs to the second floor of the school. The parents and several of the teachers thought she looked "cute" with this excess body fat and were shocked when my husband stated the potential health risks, including heart disease and diabetes. They are simply used to looking a obese children as normal.
While we continue to research cures for cancer, stem cell breakthroughs and disease management, maybe it is time to get back to the basics. How can we help people eat healthier and exercise more effectively? Many Americans apparently still do not know how to do this.

My major was Nutrition Sciences. Nutrition science majors study how our bodies transform everything from hot dogs to salads into energy we can use. I studied how being overweight effected the general overall health of the body. Certainly diabetes and heart disease are much less of a risk when we are at our optimal weight. Knowing that I have been exploringe the latest research in weight loss ingredients. Through that research I became aware of two great products that I have been testing and seeing amazing weight loss results among my test groups. One is a fusion is a safe, legal, and potent form of ephedra, for fat burning, combined with hoodia for appetite suppression. The test results are showing very significant weight loss. If you want detailed info you can find it here http://cli.gs/EphedraFusion ( cli.gs/EphedraFusion ) I don't think there has ever been a better weight loss product than Ephedra and there is a limited supply of this new legal form. The other product is Cell Pro 7 with OM 24, a Swiss formula weight loss supplement . It has been amazing effective for my test groups. It is available on line at ( tiny.cc/SwissDietFormula ) http://tiny.cc/SwissDietFormula

With all these fast food joints popping up everywhere nowadays, people eating there and gaining weight is right on. I am. unfortunatelt, in that group... somewhat. I work at a mall and eat food from in the food court far too often. I don't eat hamburgers and fries, but instead I eat at SteakEscape, where they make sub-like sanwiches. I always get a chicken parmesan sandwich, where I have them only put in chicken and parmesan cheese. I tell them to leave out the sauce and onions and provelone cheese. and a side to that I usually just have a cup of ice water or maybe a small cup of soda. But too many fast food joints are popping up everywhere and using too much fatty ingredients in their foods. That, and frying so many of their menu items doesn't help either.

It is not that poor women are not aware of nutrition as much as the high cost of decent food in a climate where you cannot grow your own for much of the year. If you are poor and do not have access to a place to grow vegetables then the grocery store prices make healthy eating an unattainable option. A small fast food hamburger is about $1.00 when asparagus is $4.00 a bunch; blueberries are over $4.00 a box; milk is over $4.00 a gallon and most of the time tomatoes are verging on unaffordable off season. Organic is not even an option most of the time. Also, the stereotypical poor individual is one is not working but now it very well can be that it is a single mom working more than one job and she just doesn't have time or money to prepare decent food.

Poor women are fat because they live closer to McDonalds? That makes no sense. I'm sure you could find a few studies linking poverty and depression and a few more linking depression with obesity. It should only take a few extra minutes to come up with an informed opinion.

Yes, I totally agree with depression and being overweight being linked. I had a significant loss of income when I went from a job where I used my education level to a job which doesn't. I can't afford a gym membership. I come home frustrated from my job and not very motivated to exercise in an apartment complex with limited space and facilities and really tacky, judgemental neighbors. Also, I'm too tired from figuring out how to pay my bills. It's not a great excuse, but I would weigh 500 lbs. if I could afford to go to McD's on a daily basis. I never go out and I cook for myself. Yes, I buy more fruits, veggies and whole foods and sometimes no meat and never processed, junk food, sodas or frozen foods. I gained weight since I changed jobs and it's not due to junk food.

I agree kids , Many are overweight , But how can they go play outside here the latest little girl was right inside her trailer park and murdered , You can no longer say , go out and play , ride your bike, go skate, go to the park and play ball , they need body guards , or a parent that has no job, no chores , no meals to cook , etc So they can go out and be with the child the whole time there outside , I remember we were out playing till the street lights came on at night , Not anymore ,

Poor eating habits among the poor are not only an issue of availability and expense of heathy foods, but also the fact that these foods need to be prepared. That is time consuming. Many mothers of very low income families work long hard hours for low wages and commute by public transportation. Twelve hour days are common. Often they do not have full kitchens or personal fridges. Hot plates and shared kitchens are common. Sending the kids to the corner to pick up something is a usual solution.

You know how they recommend 5 Fruits and Vegetables per day per person? Do you know that the United States Department of Agriculture's own figures have established that there aren't even enough fruits and vegetables for everyone to have 5, even if they wanted...? Their own numbers show that there's only enough for about 2.8 per person. Look it up yourself.

Aside from local supermarkets in poorer neighborhoods charging a lot for healthy foods, there is a problem with education of the poor. Many school districts totally cut out the home economics classes in order to save money and fulfill various state mandates. If you want, you can eat "healthy" at fast food places - order a small burger or grilled chicken and have a side salad instead of the fries. Of course, the fast food joints also charge more for the healthier foods!

Great article.....I am wondering why men with higher incomes
really need to be n the overweight side. Could it also be
higher stress levels? availability of convenient fast foods?
not enough time to sit down and eat at home? After eating
too much red meat, I feel somewhat sluggish in hot weather.
I should have had lightweight Asian food . I live on a low income.
I am trying to lose more weight. I have to put up with others
when they are tired and irritable too. More stress ,mentally.
A tough balance.

If you want fewer diabetics and overweight people in this country , try taking the MSG out of all our processed foods , This flavor enhanser has been long known to cause a high rate of weight gain and resulting diabetes in all lab animals tested . Shame on companies like Kraft and Campbells for having this stuff in their foods.

Low-income women are more likely overweight....that's craziness. While low-income women may tend to be overweight, they are certainly NOT the only ones. I am not low-income, but I do work night shift, suffer from depression, take birth-control...all of which contribute to weight gain...
