I was at Home Depot today and they were not giving out free CFL bulbs as your article stated. I did not know about the freebie; however, upon entering the store there was not a flyer or representative at the front door to tell you about the freebie. I bought an item and even at the cash register, where you think they would have been giving them out to customers, the cashier did not say or hand me any CFL bulbs. The freebie never existed.

I don't understand how these CFL bulbs are any better for our environment than the regular light bulbs. They contain MERCURY (think of the old glass thermometors your parents or grandparents had that they now tell us are toxic). If one breaks in your house, you have to follow HAZMAT type cleanup procedures. If you are a young couple looking for a house, how are you going to make sure that CFL bulbs have not broken in that home or that they were not cleaned up properly... I refuse to buy these bulbs. accidents happen, and I don't want that poison released in my home. I have a son with autism and I do my best to keep toxins away from him, not expose him to more.

The mecury inside the CFL bulbs is toxic if released. It is released if and when the CFL bulb gets broken and the area in the house where it broke needs to be ventilated before cleaning up can begin. This are more dangerous for the earth, us and environment that old fashioned light bulbs.

I too was at Home Dep. today and was also amazed at the MISLEADING/FALSE ADVERTISING.
In the outdoor gardening advertising Herbs ..'buy one get one free'..Sunday only. When I took the plants to the check out they rang up $1.78 and I did NOT get one free with it.. The clerk tried to explain and then was confused herself since it is VERY misleading how they were trying to 'move the plants'.
I tried to complain to the Gardening Manager but he DID not have the courtesy to come out and talk with me after the clerk tried to explain the confusion with the pricing.
Actually they were just selling them 'half price'...NOT buy one and get one free'.... FALSE ADVERTISING.

Selling them at 1/2 price is the same as buy 1 get one free. Do the math.

Anyone who has not figured out Home Depot yet, let me enlighten you!!! They are the biggest contributor to land-fills in the United States, Mexico, Canada and China!!! Every day, at any given store, they throw more things away than an average family of six throws away in a year!!! THINK ABOUT IT! And it's not all garbage!!! Many items are in perfect condition and could be donated to many different non-profit organizations, but in ends up in land-fills so they can "keep their numbers" up to plan!! Home Depot has to be held accountable for their waste!! We got rid of the companies that polluted "our air" in the past, now let's get rid of the companies that are polluting "our earth"!!

They do make cfl bulbs that do not contain mercury I have seen them at Wal-mart, Walgreens, Freds, and Lowe's. I have cut my electric bill literatly in half by switching out all my light bulbs to cfl. Plus they last alot longer I haven't replaced a light bulb since changing them out in over a year.

I was at Home Depot today and there was no mention or indication of free light bulbs. I spoke briefly to a greeter and talked to two employees on the floor when I needed assistance.
