Reality show lets workers at struggling companies decide who to fire
Filed under: Extracurriculars, Career, Recession
Everyone in an office has an opinion on who the slackers are in their area and who should be fired or laid off if it comes to that. But they don't get to make those decisions; the bosses do.

Soon, a new reality show will allow workers to choose which of their co-workers should be fired, giving workers of the world a chance to be the boss.
The show from the Dutch-based creator of the hit TV series "Big Brother" will allow staff at companies struggling in the global recession to choose which colleague should be fired or get a salary cut based on information about pay and past performance, according to a Reuters story.
Each episode of "Someone's Gotta Go" will also ask workers at struggling businesses to choose who should get a raise.
"It will be an interesting experiment to reverse the power roles," said a spokesman for Endemol, the production company from Amsterdam.
The format has been sold to Fox Television in the United States. Why is that not surprising?

My jaw dropped when I saw this story. We should be ashamed of whatever dynamic in our culture encourages this type of thing and calls it "entertainment". I hope they have a mental health professional and a grief counselor on staff to deal with the inevitable fallout from this show. Who would even want to be part of this? Unbelievable.

This is just what we need - another voyeuristic reality show. The proliferation of such junk is primarily due to the demand for it, but at fault are the production companies. Because they want a quick buck and such ventures are cheaper than thoughtful TV series? Sure, but that's not all there is to it. I think it's because there is a dearth of creative talent that can produce substantive shows. When the writers went on strike some time back, I rejoiced. During that hiatus little junk was produced. Try a book for a change, America, or at least The History Channel. I would rather watch the history of cereal food companies than Dancing with the Bimbos. C'mon, guys, you know all you want to see are those bands-of-steel legs the gals have!

I have to admit that a part of me feels that this is a really bad idea. There is a reason why some people are meant to be bosses and some arn't--meaning that some people are better at taking the emotion out of who should get fired. Therefore having taken the high road it is time for me to say the part that pulls me in the opposite direction. I can't help feeling that I am not the only one who has worked for a company and felt that the company would be better off without certain people. So I have to admit that I would get a certain thrill out of other people at least getting to put their 2 cents worth in.

Will there be a follow-up episode that shows the poor sap who was fired come back and kill everyone in the office? I can't wait. I hope Chef Ramsay is the host.

Ohhhhhhhbbbbbbooooooy.......I can see a BIG PROBLEM.....Unfortunantly, most co-workers hold grudges and are, better said, UNFAIR, which is why they ARE NOT in supervising positions. I can see some of them LOVING IT when someone gets walked out.....Human nature, sadly.....HUMAN RESOURCES TOOOOO!!!!.....Me thinks that the hiring and firing should be done by people who DO NOT work with each other daily.........What does anyone else think?

Wow. Fox has done it again. Just when I thought they couldn't sink any lower than they already had. And "reality" TV? It has taken us to depths I never would have imagined not that many years ago--mean-spirited people conniving and being cruel to one another.... (Isn't that something we try to avoid in our every day lives?) I find it odd that this is what we seek out as entertainment. I have to wonder if Fox is hoping for a workplace shooting after some poor person is told to get out by his/her coworkers. We are going downhill, not because of some
imagined threat from gay marriage or stem cell research. It's our
lack of compassion and humanity, and making those sadly lacking assets grist for the "entertainment" mill. How sick.

*JEANINE.. I too worked for a company that I felt let certain people get away with NOT doing their jobs and then to add to the insult, those certain people got huge raises while those of us who weren't "buddies" with our boss landed up picking up the slack for the slackers and got what I called PATHETIC RAISES. I mean I even asked at one point.. "why even give me this raise, it's not going to make a difference". So yeah, I would have loved to have been able to demote people or write them up but hey, it wasn't my job so basically, I had to just suck it up and I did. However, with this new show and espeically during the economical time we're in, I think this is the wrong thing to do, to put on air!! I can see someone who's been fired, coming back with a gun and "firing at the boss who fired them"!! Fox has always been low on the scale as far as "networks" go so to see them do this... well, it only tells me that they will do ANYTHING to raise their networks standing but again, I think it's going to back fire on them. I know for me, this is NOT a reality show I plan on watching and if people are truly disgusted with this idea, then my suggestion would be.. DON'T WATCH. If they don't have viewers, they don't have a show.. PERIOD!! Just my opinion on this INSANE story... Peace

Coworkers don't always see the work you do and how you do it. 90% people are so busy whining and complaining and being self-absorbed, that their perception is skewed. Although I am lucky and think most of my coworkers are decent people, they have no idea what my job entails and would certainly NOT be the right judge of what my salary should be or whether I should even have a job.
I'm thinking this show will be horrible, and the timing is horrific considering the economy I doubt it will make it to a second season. I think people would hate to see a show like this when they feel their own jobs may be threatened.

If you want a real reality show...let's have one called "Dogs Fights Their Captor", where convicted dog fighters are forced to fight all their own dogs at once. Just an idea...but it wouldn't be fair to the dogs.
