Save California: Legalize marijuana
Filed under: Budgets, Entrepreneurship, Health, Recession
Legalizing marijuana, and taxing it and adding fees for its regulation, could add more than a billion dollars a year into the state's finances, under a bill proposed by a state assemblyman.
The bill introduced Monday by Assemblyman Tom Ammiano of San Francisco would regulate marijuana like alcohol. People over 21 years old would be allowed to grow, buy, sell and possess the drug, according to a San Francisco Chronicle story.
It's unclear if federal law barring marijuana use would supersede any state law. Californians approved Proposition 215 in 1996, allowing marijuana for medical use, but federal agents have closed pot clubs throughout the state.
As a California resident facing increased state taxes and service cutbacks as the state deals with what seems like a constant budget problem, I support this bill and the money it would raise.
Ammiano's bill already has the backing of Betty Yee, who chairs the state Board of Equalization, which collects taxes in California. Her agency found that the state would collect $1.3 billion a year in tax revenue and a $50-an-ounce levy on retail sales if marijuana were legal.
The analysis also found that legalization would drop the street value by half and increase consumption by 40%.
For Californians, adding another tax may be the best way to solve the budget crisis that pops up every year. At least lawmakers will be a little more mellow when debating it.

The people need marijuana legalized. The main reason, is that it is too high priced. These California pot farmers are raking it in. They are worse than Wall Street and corporate America!!! You see TV programs where one plant can fetch $25,000. Hell with that…We need imported pot from Mexico, Thailand or Philippines for 1/10th that!!! American can’t produce anything without being greedy. Legalizing pot will bring prices way down and force those greedy pot growers in California to make what an average corn or wheat grower makes. The time is now for the law to change.

The prohibition of marijuana should definitely be lifted after 70 years of ridiculous campaigns against it. The fact that it is listed as a schedule 1 claiming there is no medical use for the drug is hypocritical. Tobacco and alcohol would never be prescribed by any doctor in the medical community for any kind of treatment. Not to mention the fact that even an unfiltered marijuana joint cause less harm to the lung and other organs of the body then a filtered cigarette regardless of the "lightness" of the brand one may smoke. Alcohol causes liver damage along with heart and other organ diseases. Studies with marijuana have showed little to no deaths with usage. Lastly a person under the influence of THC is practically none violent, where as many individuals that become intoxicated with alcohol can become extremely violent. It's time for change and to let people that have been convicted for possession of this drug to have their lives back. We have made allot of history in this great country... sadly we never look back and learn from it. I can only hope California can bring change to this issues in America.

If california legalizes marijuana their money problems will be over in a year. It's about time that the truth came out about pot. To many people are ignorant about the effects and great uses of cannabis. "The Emperor wears no Clothes" is a great book to read if you want to come out of the dark about cannabis. As long as we also include restrictions on the tobacco industry in their production so that they do not add all the additives like they have in cigarettes we'll see no ill side effects other than an increase in sales at the junkfood stores. Do it California and your population will see an increase, you'll see tons of money rolling into the state, more smiles, and less road rage!

Legalize it...
...Pfizer will advertise it...
Do you suffer from frequent boredom or anxiety? Do you wish your sex life was more entertaining? Are lava lamps not as thrilling as the once were? Do you just want to chill out and, like, put on some tunes? If so, you should talk to you doctor about Cannabis, the as many times as you want-daily supplement that's genetically engineered to be danker than anything your mind can fucking process.
Cannabis should not be taken with alcohol.
Side effects may include dry mouth, bloodshot eyes, fits of hilarious laughter, intense hunger, short-term memory loss, procrastination, thinking of "really good ideas" that usually turn out to be dumb, alien abduction, cattle mutilation, spontaneous human combustion, and killing the guy that comes to the door for absolutely no reason.
Make sure to tell your doctor if you are a republican and/or religious fundamentalist. Your doctor may need to increase the dose to break down the years of indoctrination.
Relax, it's just cannabis.

weed will be legal in my lifetime. i firmly believe this, after seeing "grass", and realizing that the enthusiasm for restrictive marijuana policy is fading with time. i have patience, because i have a lot more life to live, but the time could very well be now. when it happens, it will no doubt come about through california first.
this is a time for hope.

It is a fact that we are wasting precious tax money on people who have committed nonviolent crimes, such as growing or the possession of marijuana. They sit in jail for being involved with a natural plant, and we pay for it.
The State could obviously make millions in profit from this mean of agriculture, while saving money with less people in jail.
Amid the other facts that it is less harmful than alcohol, and less dangerous than cigarettes, lies the fact that it is illegal because of bias and media slamming. Some of America's most successful people have used marijuana, including Clinton, Phelps, numerous athletes, song writers, authors, actors, etc.
Pot is not a big deal, but the big deal over pot is the thing thats keeping the plant illegal.
LEGALIZE IT!

Who's going to pay a $50 an ounce tax on something you can grow in your backyard? I think the tax benefit might be "slighty" overestimated.
What is your local drug dealer going to do for a living?
a) Get a legitimate job (yeah, right).
b) Continue selling marijuana (quite likely since not everyone wants to grow the stuff to avoid the $50/ounce tax).
c) Get into another line of business (car jackging, pimping, purse snatching, etc.).

I forgot to mention, this is really bad fo Mexico. They'll lose an important source of export revenue; it's a good thing they'll still have the cocaine business, otherwise the Mexican cops would go hungry.

Why not legalize it? There are so many resources from hemp for one thing. And when I smoke I know when I cant drive unlike when I drink I think Im invincible. This economy needs some chilling time and together we can all reach CLOUD 9.

hemp products can help to make clothing and even fuel(something the US has been having a crisis with for years). the most important part of the plant IS the bud though. with legitimate bud, even if people decide to grow, that just means they can alter the laws to make growing marijuana unlicensed more severe of a crime than it is now, though it actually already is severe. i think people will pay the 50 dollars an ounce tax if the state price is half the street prices. say 200 for an ounce is only 250 with tax. if your old ounce cost 400, itll be a while before you can get one for 200. most dealers dont grow anyways and that is a fact i know.
people need to realize marijuana isnt a gateway drug. the theory is severely flawed, and is the only way to scare the young teens enough to make them maybe not want to try. i smoke weed. you wont see me crashing into people on the street drunk cause i find sober rides home like a good pothead. all my good pothead friends are also going to college. just like me.
its funny, cause i see the kids who drink, that dont smoke(or dont smoke much), make racial jokes. theyre those all-american kids who are proud of being 90% white and suburban. and theyre also the kids that speed in my town, and get in crashes. they have parties, get sent to the hospital for binge drinking, which in 1999 about 44% of american college kids did at least once in a two week period.
nobody has been confirmed to have died by smoking weed. if someone got someone else killed with the friend was high, its because they were a dumbass, and most likely poor/not well educated which most often go hand in hand with each other. smoke weed if you know you can. if u cant, step up and step back when someone wants to pass you the joint. shit im 17 and im not trying to do anything but smoke herb and keep aceing school. i love california. i think theres so much weed smoke in the air here that it helps people focus on real goals, legalizeeeeee

I have no against with legalizing the clean/pure marijuana. The big BUT is “will government have any powerful tools to monitor to receive the accurate amount of tax?” The dispensaries lie on their income. If the government does their job better, the so-called California debt issue will be taking care by next income tax season. Two shops that I know well, are collecting not less than $1200 cash in every 4 hours. Their daily average income is not less than $3000 cash. I was there a few times and noticed their couple of end of days total as $6000. I am very jealous and angry to know whenever liars making money illegally. Again, if the USA government could do good faithful job, huge amount of black money will be found, and American people will feel and see more equalities. Regardless of you are a patient or not, please join me to spread this issue around. I have posted it on infowheel.net too.

Marijuana use will not go away.It hasn't in 3000 +++ years and besides if we don't the crime family's,hundreds of gangs and YES even terrorists, that use it to make money (billions) will still make billions. No culture in the history of man kind has ever been able to stop the use of one thing or another.and they never will be able to.we should legalize it because it would devastate our enemy's and literally save lives.our laws really have empowered the criminals and made them rich.its time to stop the B.S. and support the law abiding loving tax paying people of the USA not the broken out of date laws and the criminals that don't want it legalized.

when i drink alcohol i black out and forget what i have done, alcohol caused me to try meth. now i don't do anything but i sure miss smoking a joint or blunt after work when the day was done. weed help me sleep better and made me humble, if i didn't have to worry about taking a piss test i would still smoke, if the state was smart they would treat weed the same as alcohol and tax it, to me weed has always make me hungry and happy, but when i drink alcohol i have beaten people down and not even remembered a thing, i was wondering why they was avoiding me, i had to find out from someone else what i did at that party the other night.
