U.S. Airways starts charging $7 for pillows and blankets
Filed under: Transportation, Travel
U.S. Airways, which we learned yesterday from the release of the Hudson River ditching tapes is nicknamed "Cactus" among air traffic tower controllers, continues to earn its prickly reputation. Starting Feb 16, it will charge $7 for pillows and blankets on its flights. The development should surprise no one. JetBlue started doing this in August, and it sold the upcharge by making a big-to-do about the supposed high quality of its pillows, and pointing out that passengers could keep them after the flight for re-use.
But leave it to U.S. Airways to co-opt an extra charge among the major carriers. It leads the major fliers when it comes to instituting charges. When JetBlue was posting a charge for blankets, U.S. Airways was posting a charge for water. Now it has expanded the in-flight fees be selling passengers their own take-home, logo-emblazoned "Power-Nap Sack" containing an inflatable pillow, fleece blanket, earplugs, and an eye mask.
It's useless to complain about these extra airline fees. They are clearly here to stay. U.S. Airways announced last week that its list of extra fees brought in some $100 million for the airline in the last three months of 2008, despite the fact that seat occupancy fell nearly 7%. No airline is going to dismiss that kind of dollar number. They're going to take that number and see how far they can push it up.
I wasn't going to whine about this new extra price anyway. I don't mind paying for pillows and blankets if it means I don't have to use the disgusting ones the airlines now provide. They're covered with other people's hair and perfumed with strangers' body oils, and instead of being properly laundered between flights, they're usually folded and set out for the next greasy-haired person. If paying $7 guarantees me something clean, then I'll pay it. But usually, I'm more content to use my coat or jacket. That's free, and it saves me from having to find a space to stow it. So U.S. Airways can charge whatever it wants. I won't contribute to that $100 million. Like movies and water, I'll just bring my own, and feel virtuous doing it.

That is SO cheap of U.S. Airways to do that. And you know why they're doing it? Because of the money that they're having to dish out to the passengers who were on the flight that landed in the Hudson Bay. Look at the timing.

this has nothing to do with USAir,but it is an x-tra charge. When u begin the purchase of a ticket on line from Spirit, it isnt untill after u have purchased, that there is an additional charge for a seat.$7-$12 for each leg. For eg, you stop once before reaching final dest and u purchased a window seat. That will be$24 added to purchase price. And if you wish to have a return flt, another $24 for a total of $48. As i mentioned earlier, you only find this out after you bought the ticket. No where in the process of completing the steps recquired, do they mention a charge for seating.Baggage yes.Taxes and other fees yes. When comparing the cost of a ticket with other airlines, dont forget to add the cost of the seat before you decide if you choose Spirit

I'd rather drive 1K miles from FL - to my hometown of NYC. And don't plan on taking your toy dog on the plane with you if you want to save money.-100$+ often. BUT jammed under the seat, He would have been the first thing I grabbed before exiting on the Hudson. Any in cargo are fish food.

Fly Southwest; no B.S.; great respect for customers and no chicken s--- fees. USAIR doing this is an embarrassment in that it once again nickels and dimes folks. You get what you pay for as they say. Southwest, yes no assigned seats but who gives a hoot when no hidden fees/free snacks and beverages and best of all, you get respect.

I used to work for USAirways as a flight attendant, and believe me.....I do NOT miss working for them one bit!! I was embarassed before all these extra fees kicked in, now I'd be hiding underneath a seat having to ask a pax for $2 for a soda or water, and now $7 for a pillow/blanket? It's ALL about executive management making more and more $$$, yet they still can't get their contracts resolved. Why? they don't want to pay the flight attendants and pilots any more money...that would take away from their bonuses.

As a 20 year frequent flier with US Scareways, I have watched the rapid decline of the airline. It just shows how out of touch the management of the airline is. They added the $15 per bag to fight rising fuel costs because they knew whrn the price of jet fuel sank, they could still charge for an established cost.

The airlines would be smarter to tack the charges to the flight fee. It would make for less work. This includes bag charges which wipe out tips for Skycaps.
This is part of the deregulation of airlines and the hedge funds for fuel.
Charge more and offer better service rather than making each flight a cattle call with air line hostesses walking around with black plastic bags saying "Trash, Trash."
Make it a class act.

It's just a matter of time before US Airways will begin charging to use the restrooms on board. After all, you've gotta give up something for that $2 bottle of water you just bought!

The poster who commented on US Airways charging for pillows and blankets because of the Hudson incident can't really be serious. And if you are serious you're an idiot. The airline is charging because it's potential revenue. It's the same reason they charge for drinks, checking bags et al. Hey people guess what: Times have changed. We're in a recession/depression. You people want low fares? You've got them, and the accompanying fees to support those low fares. I don't necessarily agree with all of the fees, but I don't think any airline should fail because spoiled, entitled, whining misers want free this and free that while paying low fares.
And to the ex-flight attendant I'm glad you're happy. If you're gonna hide under a seat because you don't have the balls to do your job then it's a good thing for you and your colleagues that you did leave. Whatever you're doing now I sure hope you don't feel compelled to hide as you earn your living. Peace. Out.

If we all stopped flying for 14 days they would really clean up their act or GO BROKE. I doubt they would continue to rip us off.

My husband and I just flew AirTran. They charge for bags , no blankets or pillows, o.k., but how can one airport measure your bag and say its within the limits permitted and another airport measure the same bag and say its over the limit for size not weight. Don't we all use the same measurement tool? And another thing, when fuel was over $4.00 a gallon, all the up charges could be accepted, but fuel had gone down, but not the upcharges, what gives? Oh yea, the management does need those milion/billion dollar bonuses!
I don't see the airline giving anything to those of us who sat on the tarmac for 5 hours waiting to takeoff!! It's aa outrage the way consumers are treated
