ATM Theft: $9 million in 30 minutes
Filed under: Ripoffs and Scams, Fraud
I think a new record has been set for how much money can be stolen in a record amount of time. One group of fraudsters got away with $9 million in a mere 30 minutes. The thieves used about 100 ATM cards which had their daily withdrawal limits removed. That allowed them to hit ATM machines in 49 cities and run off with $9 million.Very little is being reported about this crime so far. What we know is that RBS WorldPay, the US processor for Royal Bank of Scotland Group is the victim. They were mighty slow in reporting the theft, however. They did a press release on December 23, stating that there was a breach of their computer system which allowed the fraudulent use of 100 cards. A total of 1.5 million card numbers were compromised.
The scam was dependent on a group of "cashiers," people who were willing to actually go to ATMs and make the withdrawals. The crime was coordinated, with all of the cashiers hitting ATMs just after midnight on November 8, 2008. There are no suspects yet, although the cashiers were likely photographed at the ATMs. Based on the small amount of money they were likely paid to do this dirty work, law enforcement is hoping some of them will be willing to rat out those above them in the scam.
It's interesting that a theft of this magnitude, which happened in early November, wasn't reported on until almost three months later. $9 million in 30 minutes is not an insignificant amount, and the fact that the personal information of 1.5 million consumers was compromised isn't insignifanct either. I'm even more intrigued by this fact: $9 million stolen with 100 cards equals $90,000 stolen with each card. Where do you find an ATM machine that has that much money in it?

The human animal is greedy, ingenious and loves attention; therefore, I think the hackers will be back for more, for the lure of even greater profits will be too great. It’s modern-day bank robbery without the fear of dying in a gun battle with the police. The brazen heist was completed with almost total anonymity in several cities around the world. Somehow I doubt the ring leader will ever be caught.

Barney Franks, and the rest of the Democratic Party were probably the ringleaders and probably didn't even pay any tax on the 9 million.

The money had to have been taken from 100 high dollar accounts using multiple cards for each account. I'd suspect that the perps gave each "runner" several cards to use to keep the amount of people involved low....example: each user may have had 20 cards to use in a one hour period (3 min per transaction). They meet up with their handlers give back the 20 used cards and the money, take their "cut" and the handler gives them another 20 cards....repeat over an 8-hour period and it starts adding up.
Most ATM's dole out twenties so it takes a while to snag 9 million! Just a matter of time before they get caught though.

Ummmm, I have someone that works at the bank, and she loads up the ATM everyday with the cash. Over the weekend, she puts a little bit more in because of the bank being closed on Sunday, but....I can tell you right now that its no where near a million. Actually, its not even half that....ok, its not even a quarter of that. Not by a long shot. I'm beginning to think maybe the bank of Scottland if doing a little scam of their own. Maybe they are saying that much was stolen, but maybe it wasn't stolen from the ATM's.

That is small potatoes compared to the amount of money Congress steals from taxpayers. In fact, they aren't even satisfied with that. Just check out the National Debt if you think otherwise.

Are you guys retarded or what?
To begin with:
Jacob, Pike realizes it says 90,000 per card, he is simply stating, just as the article does, that most ATM's don't even have that much in them!
Jim, get with it buddy. It says 9 million not 9 hours, they only had 30 minutes to do it for some reason. It's not like they're still running around doing it.
And Stephen, They obviously took the money out of the machines. The reason they could do it so fast was because they had the limits removed. It doesn't take long for the machine to whip the money out, even in $20 increments.

It is so sad indeed that it appears that no one has "Reading Comprehension" anymore today.
The news article above was very clear. It clearly states they used credit cards with "NO daily withdrawal limit". Which means they inserted the card and asked for $30,000 or more in just one transaction.
So each card only had to be used only at four AMT machines and withdraw $120,000 in just four transaction from four separate machines. Thus, if just one person went to 12 AMT locations within 30 minutes in a large city where AMT's are fairly close together and withdrew $30,000 from each machine in one transaction each, the total withdrawn per persone would be $300,000
This was an "Inside" job by someone with access to the AMT machines computer systems program code, who more than likely worked with a group of 30 close family members and relatives and they probably wore thin rubber gloves and ski masks.

Sounds like a repeat of the "Michaelangelo Fiasco" where upon on his birthday, a few years ago, all the ATM's in the country went flooey, and any money taken out during that brief period was not even recorded, and it was like a free grab for any lucky person withdrawing money. If computers will someday take over the world, then we should all sit back and relax, as they are bound to foul up their own circuits. Anyhow, this story must be exaggerated, there's not 100 people in this world that would stick together and pull something like this, and not one person could do it all by theirself. If it's so, then tendered congratulations are in order.

Ohio's attorney general sued DSW Shoe Warehouse on Monday to force it to do something it says it can't do. "
"Attorney General Jim Petro's lawsuit seeks to force the Columbus-based shoe retailer to personally contact every consumer affected by a recent case of identity theft. Computer hackers accessed customer data from 111 DSW stores between November and February. Petro estimates more than 1 million customers were affected and around 700,000 have not been contacted."

Article doesn't say where theft occurred. Assuming it was USD, predominately 20s, $9M would weigh about 900 pounds.
I also suspect they hit multiple ATMs until they ran out of money, then quickly moved on to the next one.
So many people had to be involved the chances of them catching the perts would seem high. If in the U.S. you cannot deposit more than $10,000 without filling out a form. Seems like someone suddening having a lot of cash would come to their attention.

what is wrong with u people, it says that 49 cities were hit within a half hour, that means probably 49 or more people using the cards, probably 100 people, 1 for each card. Hundreds of atm's were hit. Lots of planning, Genious.
